  1. Is Branyan ever going to be healthy? His at bats last night were horrid and he looked like he did in June when his shoulder was bothering him.
  2. Is that Corey Hart listed as an outfielder and not 3B?
  3. Very close jacob. The actual results: Stat: Actual (Your guess) Team A: 1923 Yankees Wins: 98 (97) Losses: 54 Runs: 824 (761) Runs Allowed: 622 (586) Team B: 1923 Indians Wins: 82 (94) Losses: 71 Runs: 886 (808) Runs Allowed: 745 (646) Team C: 1923 Tigers Wins: 83 (92) Loss: 71 Runs:833 (762) Runs Allowed: 741 (663)
  4. I understand, but as long as there exists a possibility for a wild card spot, despite actually probability people are going to talk about it. Some people would rather accentuate the romantic possibilities rather than the rationalistic probabilities.
  5. I was just making an estimation that the winner would be more likely to have 87 wins than 89 wins, not that the Brewers were going to win or that your table is horribly wrong.
  6. Baseball-Almanac doesn't have that stat. I was going to put runs and runs against on there but I thought it would be too easy. NOTE: This was a 154 game season.
  7. But that assumes an equal probability for all of the games which your first post of the thread discounts.
  8. Sure a) OBP - .357 SLG - .423 b) OBP - .381 SLG - .421 c) OBP - .377 SLG - .401 Or I'm trying to see what people can infer using the core team stats.
  9. Any more word on Branyan's back?
  10. Three teams from an actual season - which one finished first, second and third and why do you think they did? a) Team OPS - .780 Team ERA - 3.62 Team WHIP - 1.34 b) Team OPS - .801 Team ERA - 3.99 Team WHIP - 1.44 c) Team OPS - .778 Team ERA - 4.09 Team WHIP - 1.42
  11. I just don't see real evidence for that (despite what my signature would suggest). None of the competing teams are more than above average and most have difficult schedules for the remainder of the season.
  12. I think the wildcard winner is going to have 87 wins. For it to be 89, Philly would have to win 60% of its remaining games. The only team I can see getting to 89 would be Florida if their pitching remains strong. (They need to win 61% to reach 89).
  13. What about UP-UP-DOWN-DOWN and SELECT-START?
  14. I was trying to figure out what caused the ripples in her neck.
  15. Is it just me or does it look like her face has been pulled taut?
  16. I thought they use an exponent of 1.82 now instead of 2.
  17. I'm sorry I didn't convey my point earlier with more clarity, but there must be some understanding that someones willingness to succeed can translate into actual performance such as hustling out a double affects SLG, albiet in a small way.
  18. Which proves why the Dodgers lost the 88 World Series.
  19. It depends on what you mean by "win the day"? Should contracts be awarded based on heart? No. Is heart magically going to make a .600 OPS guy a 1.000 OPS guy? No. On the other hand, to assume that one's heart (as I defined it) can not affect a player by some degree is equally silly. The fact that we can not say an Isolated Heart Factor of 2 will adjust a player's OPS by 50 points and an IsoHF of 8 will affect it by 20 is not important to identifying wether or not it has bearing.
  20. Except for the fact that it was a contract year in which he was to become a free agent.
  21. I'll bite. "Emotional investment in desiring success for self and others on team."
  22. That's only an assumption. I would assume (without taking the time to pull out phsycology articles on the topic) that self-interest can only take you so far. Take Sheffield's stats, in the first part of 1998 with Florida he only had a .892 OPS but with LA he posts a .979 OPS. Is this all statistical variation or did the fact that he wanted to be traded have something to do with his effort in Florida?
  23. How do you know that there aren't several Barry Neffields around the league that become emotionally detached and thus "go through the motions" at points in their play? And as for having him on your team, wouldn't you only want him on your team if he wanted to be on your team? Otherwise there is no assurance of a lofty OPS.
  24. As for how "heart" affects play, let's take one extreme example. To protect the innocent we shall call this totally hypothetical player Barry Neffield. This player would, when lacking emotional desire aka heart, be known to tank plays and play poorly to get traded to another team. This player (again, that is a pure construction to prove a point) would not do this simply once in his career, he would do it repeatedly. Because we can't quantify this player's lack of heart, does that mean it will not effect his performance?
  25. Just because a quality can not be easily quantified does not mean it does not have an effect on performance.
