  1. Very interesting responses from all of you. Nobody mentioned my favorite place which is Bernie's at Clark and Waveland. It's clean and last year they opened up a second floor lounge so there is a lot more room now. Regardless of which place you choose, be sure to get there early enough to go to one of them; it's part of the overall experience of going to Wrigley. Food inside the park? I admit it - it sucks and I hate Old Style. The french fries and nachos are both decent; other than those two things, eat elsewhere. The restrooms? Hey that's part of the ambiance. You will not have a problem with Cubs fans if you are not obnoxious. As someone early on pointed out - just cheer for your Brewers and not against the Cubs and there will be no problems. And yes there are people that go there just to go there and don't really care about the game. Ignore them. If anybody gets physically out of hand don't fight back - call security. Real Cubs fans don't want those idiots in the park. And by the way, calling all Cubs fans that come to Miller Park, morons, is a serious overexaggeration. However, Ronnie Woo-woo is one of the morons. The advice you got on getting to the game is all good. Just pick a route and stick by it. I would not suggest driving all the way because end of game time will be rush hour in Chicago (Hah when isn't?) Above all else - Enjoy the game.
  2. Just in case anybody wants to know, it's Dan Iassogna. I have also umpired in the past (youth ball) and also give a little credit to the umps for the tough calls. But that was BAD. The worst? I'd have to go with the Don Denkinger call in the '85 World Series considering that it was a World Series. That name still boils the blood of Cardinal's fans.
  3. I blame the headline writer. Pick 1 statement from an article and make it the headline - now it becomes an incendiary article. What if the headline had said, "Ramirez starts sinking of Maine!" Would you be as upset? Oh sure somebody would have found that line in the article and some of you would be upset regardless. I really think there is nothing wrong with thinking about a World Series as that IS the ultimate goal. And right now why shouldn't the guys on the Cubs be excited. A notoriously free swinging team leading the league in OBP, all starters with an OPS over .800, 2nd in pitches per at bat (which I didn't even know was a stat), and best start since 75. Everything is clicking. I think I read on this site that we've played the 15th toughest schedule in the league. Well, don't you think that taking 6 of 6 from the Pirates had something to do with that??? We just outscored the odds-on favorite to win the NLCS 15-2 in 2 games (including a win over a guy that I believe hand-cuffed the Brewers a week ago) We are not talking World Series yet but we are enjoying this run. Are you going to tell me you didn't enjoy your run last year?
  4. I don't think the Cards have the best fans in baseball. I don't think any team has the market cornered on great fans, that's just impossible. I think that was the point I was trying to make. All teams have great fans and all teams have a segment of morons for fans. Calling any team's fans "the best in all baseball" is a stretch.
  5. I don't see how this applies to the entire fan base, or even a small portion of it. One guy made a somewhat technically incorrect statement. That's quite a reach. OK agreed. - it is a reach. But is my indictment of an entire fan base because of that stupid statement any different than Marty inticting an entire fan base because of a bunch of boorish idiots. Or maybe I should also include the people on this site that indict an entire fan base because of a few drunken morons.
  6. The actual number of balls thrown on the field was 18. My comment about a hundred by the end of the year was not about what might happen in the future but how Wednesday night's incident will be grossly over-exagerated. Fans that were spied throwing non-home run balls were ejected as the Cubs stated that throwing back a home run ball was OK but not batting practice balls. (Note: Yes I know and the Cubs probably know that a replacement ball is frequently thrown back.) So what makes the Cardinal fans. the best fans in baseball? When I hear an older man tell his grandson, "Well, at least we got to see a good game tonight." That was a 6-0 Cardinal victory. 6-0 a good game? No! It was a good result for the Cardinals, but it was not a good game. I was at the game yesterday, and saw that shirt on sale outside the park by 1 vendor and he was kind of hiding in a corner. That shirt is an embarassment and good Cubs fans know it. Dempster hugging a foxy blonde on the mound on Friday? Hmmm... maybe that's why he lost complete control in the 5th inning yesterday. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. Geez, by the end of next week it's going to be 30-40, and by the end of the season it'll be at least a couple hundred.
  8. Don't get your panties in a knot about Harang. He was 4-0 at Wrigley before this past series. That was the one game I thought we would lose to the Reds. Albeit I knew nothing about Volquez - but I do now.
  9. Marty is entitled to his opinion. I have been to Fulton County, Riverfront, Jack Murphy, Dodger Stadium, Candlestick, County Stadium, Miller Park, Astrodome, Comiskey, US Cellular, Veterans, and Shea for baseball games and I have had to call security for protection because I was cheering FOR my team in only 1 place. RIVERFRONT.
  10. 1. As somebody else stated with a veteran team yes, but young players don't see the field enough, especially at the end ot the season when all is lost all the AAA callups sit on the bench. He is a terrible in-game manager. Example: Down 5 runs entering the 9th we had pushed a couple of runs across, pinch hit for the pitcher, and had the tieing run at the plate. Nobody is yet warming up in the pen. 2. I'm going to say no. Again as stated earlier, Wood has had a mechanics issue. In Prior's case, is 1 season of overuse going to cause problems 4 years later, because there certainly wasn't overuse in '04, '05, & '06. 3. Yes and no. First off there is no way to determine whether we would or would not have beaten the Yankees. (We did take 2 of 3 that season) As a manager he should have been out at the mound after the Alou explosion and gotten everybody settled down. But it was a team of veterans and they shouldn't have needed to be settled down. 4. I have no opinion of Yost so I'll abstain. Overall, players love Baker so from that aspect, if he is your manager, good players may want to come to play for him. Fans hate him because he is a terrible in-game manager.
  11. What did the Cubs do last year that helped them pass you by? 3 things only 1 helped 1) Traded for Craig Monroe - he was a huge let down in Chicago 2) Signed Steve Trachsel - he was even a bigger let down 3) September call-ups - Mainly Geovany Soto getting a bunch of starts over jason Kendall - that worked. So really we did nothing out of the ordinary.
  12. According to the organization, Patterson was called up because he is a left handed hitter and he has more versatility defensively (2B, LF, CF, RF) whereas Murton is right handed and can only play left or right. Fontenot, Theriot, 1 out 2 out ? How about starting off with a 4 run 1st and then finishing off a 6 run 3rd.? Whoever suggested that being without Soriano might be a good thing - good call! Those of you that listen to the Score, get some good audio books, they're much more informative. EDIT: Actually I think the reason that Patterson was called was so that he could have a reunion with his brother. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. You won't see me wearing one of those shirts. Definitely in bad taste! It was probably dreamed up by a White Sox fan. I happen to know fairly well one of the outside shirt vendors who is also a beer vendor inside. If I see him peddling that shirt, I 'll let him know how disrespectful I think it is. (As in I'll never buy another beer from him. Hit him where it really hurts.)
  14. Have you ever had strep throat? Marquis did this week. I'm actually quite amazed that he was able to pitch at all because I've had strep throat and know that there was no way I could have handled any physical activity 3 or 4 days later.
  15. I certainly don't have a most loved or even a most hated for that matter. I'm just surprised that I didn't see the name Navarro put up by anybody.
  16. TooLiveBrew - I was actually arguing the exact opposite of what Pedro was thinking - That we would beat Bush - no matter who we had pitching.
  17. Another reason that this is a fun difference of opinion discussion (and that is what it is) is that you guys are thinking about the 2005 and earlier Ryan Dempster and the 2006 Dave Bush while I was thinking about the 2007 Dave Bush (vs the Cubs) and the 2008 Spring Training Ryan Dempster.
  18. The problem with trying to figure this stuff out ahead of time is that you never know early on when your #5 starter is going to wind up starting against the other guy's #1. We've already had that in our game 5 because the Astros didn't have a day off the first week and we did. So what happened? Even though Marquis didn't get the win, we beat Oswalt that day. Somtimes you just don't know! And your comment above "Game 3 - Bush @ Dempster - thought we would beat Dempster" - now that Dempster has had 2 outstanding starts, would that still be your opinion? Again - sometimes you just don't know.
  19. With 0 RBI, it's not a big stretch to guess that he's also got 0 HR's.
  20. I find this an extremely interesting thread, especially to a fan of a team that has no real parking lots. Several thing crossing my mind: * You have become used to arriving late to games because in recent years not that many people have been showing up for games. Not that the team is good again you need to alter your expectations and plan to arrive early. * Because you are now a hot ticket, some people who would like to go to a game couldn't get tickets but are willing to take a chance while walking around the parking lots asking, "Who's got 2?" Everybody seems to have forgotten about those people . * Take public transportation if you don't want to deal with a possible parking lot lockout. I have Bears season tickets where there is a lot of parking available and I always take public transportation and still walk a mile from the train station. Good exercise! * What's wrong with hanging around the parking lot with common-bond friends (some of whom you've never met before and will never meet again http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ) and enjoying the game together especially if you wanted to go in but couldn't swing the tix. As I have stated in another thread, part of the experience in going to Wrigley is the bar scene outside the stadium. You don't have to participate but why criticize those who do. (And there are plenty of toilets available in those bars around Wrigley) * After reading about your port-a-potty situation in the parking lots, I don't think I ever want to read about how boorish you think Cubs fans are.
  21. The solution is called the "Team Error" not assigned to an individual but to the team. Example 1, Lead off batter on first, breaks, for second, niether SS or 2B cover, perfect throw, runner goes to third, catcher charged with an error when he made a perfect throw. Charging a team error is no reflection on the catcher but on the bonehead play of the middle infielders. Example 2 pop fly in the short outfield, 3 guys surround the ball, none of them touch it, falls for a double as credited by the scorer. next guy singles. Earned run scores. Call it a team error and no era jump on the pitcher. And BTW, all home teams get those calls.
  22. This certainly qualifies as a non-story. But that's what happens when you use an online translator (which those guys probably did.) I used one typing in "It's going to happen" got a Japanese translation then cut and pasted that phrase into the translation box and in English it came back as "It will probably happen." Such is life with translations. The writer of the article is stretching it a bit to call it an insult.
  23. I've often wondered about the schedule myself. Two years in a row we had 3 series at Houston and 2 series with the Astros at home. The last two years it's reversed. So to echo a previously raised question why not alternate? More of an issue to me is the interleague schedule. A few years ago (2005?) we had The Yankees and Red Sox on our schedule and the Astros had neither. This year it's the other way around and Astro fans were complaining on their board. How about 2004, when the NLC played the ALW and each NLC team played an 2 extra series within the division because of the imbalance (remember this is before your team got good and we were coming off a division title). Our 2 extra series were with the Astros and Cards while each of them played us and one of the non-contenders. How is your "natural rivalry" with Minnesota? or Houston-Texas or St Louis-Kansas City? Do you think of them have even close to the same intensity as ours with the White Sox? And speaking of Kansas City, we haven't even played them since 2001. On the other hand we have had only 1 series against Boston. In the long run it all does even out.
  24. Tbadder that is correct. He could have caught, there was no guarantee. Enlarge the picture in this article and take a look at the inset. His glove is right there but it is directly over the wall and railing. It was not a sure thing. I do not blame Bartman. I'm glad I'm not the guy that was in those seats cause I would have been reaching for the ball too.
  25. What is that supposed to mean?
