  1. I don't think the playoffs will save McCarthy again. I think Gute wants his own hire like 99% of new GMs, but simply couldn't do it right away and wanted to be able to pick from the top of the coaching pool. I think they would have to at least make the NFCCG to save his job. TT did the same thing with Sherman. 12's veiled shots at the staff are not helping McCarthy even if too much has been made of those comments. I think McCarthy had to blow the NFC away to stay on as coach and thus far it looks like more of the same. Slow start, inconsistent offense and likely fighting to the end just to make the playoffs. Comparing GB to NE is fruitless, but I often wonder if the Packers would have more success if they didn't make just qualifying for the playoffs a 15-round boxing match every single year. I just don't think it should have been as hard as it is with a QB like Rodgers.
  2. I agree 100% with this post. The Packers have the talent of a middling team. They are good enough to stay close to the best teams, and bad enough to get beat by mediocre teams. That makes them very frustrating to cheer for, because no one really knows what they are. They don't really have an identity right now. Sunday's game is going to be a very important litmus test. The Patriots are good, but they are vulnerable, especially on defense. How the Packers respond to that gut-punch game in LA will determine how things go the rest of the season. Personally, I think there's a strong chance they come ready to play in New England and pull out an upset. I fully expect them to give NE hell because it's what I've been accustomed to watching MM's teams. They usually play very well when their back is up against the wall and then struggle to escape backup scrub QBs at home against the 49ers. I'm 100% expecting a gut punch loss where they drop it 34-31 on the last drive or something. Mike Sherman had a couple 12-4 teams that were sort of paper tigers, but throughout his tenure I usually felt that the Packers put away teams they were supposed to beat. I've never felt that way with MM. It's like he has to face top teams to bring out his best and it gets so frustrating. There are just so many games where they come out against a team they should beat and play 1.5 quarters or aren't moving the ball until there's 8 minutes left in the 3rd. It's one of the most frustrating things about his teams and seems to be the case every year.
  3. Please. There is nothing weird about it. You make a prediction and people pretend you are crazy for thinking it. It feels good to be right about anything. I also got the Brewers fate correct back in March https://imgur.com/a/dicYXJp but strangely I am not getting any crap for that one nor did anyone get all up in arms when I said it. You're simply not permitted to be critical of the teams. It makes you negative or not a fan or any number of silly things.
  4. The Packers are just as close to 5-2 or 6-1 as they are to 1-6 if we want to play that game. That is pretty darn possible considering the slew of Vikings chip shot missed fgs, the rabbit Rodgers pulled out of his last week and coming back from 20-0 with a bum knee. In 2008 the Packers were 6-10. They had some insane stat that season where they lost something like 7 games on by 4 points or less, I can't remember the exact stat. It felt like every week they gave up a decisive TD or lost on a last-second FG. With most teams, you can go down the line and talk to their fans and they almost always think they're right on the edge of competing. Sometimes that is even true, save for a few teams that are just terrible. The line between mediocre and 12-4 is sometimes very small and comes down to sealing the deal consistently which the top teams do. But that team reminds me a lot of this one. They had young studs in Matthews and Raji but simply were just not ready to turn the corner. They probably got a little lucky in 2010 and got hot at the right time but it would not surprise me to see a similarly much improved team next year.
  5. I already said earlier in this thread that there is plenty of game left, and pointed out that they were in fact 3-3 in 2010. I don't think this defense has the stable of stars that one did, but they could definitely finish 9-6-1 or something which will likely be enough to make a run. This coming offseason was always the one I wanted to give to Gute and see what happens. He can't be held to too high of a standard while still hamstrung by a bunch of TT mistakes. But the fact is that as of today their flaws are pretty much what most of their critics figured. Sloppy o-line play and lack of pass rush. Of their two big FA additions, one will likely not play for them again and the other is a shell of the player he used to be. Graham has been adequate and has an impact even when he doesn't get the ball, but I think most saw him putting up bigger numbers with Rodgers than he has.
  6. Okay...I think you have mentioned it enough. You can probably go without posting how you thought they would suck this year for a few posts. Not saying you are wrong, but jeez man. That being said should be an exciting offseason no matter what happens this offseason. The DBs looked fantastic in the game against the Rams...best I have seen in ages. The young guys were physical and right on top of their receivers. They have a ton of money coming off the books and they have the draft picks to make noise in the draft. They could have some fantastic teams the coming years. I don't think I've stated it many times at all and think this kind of post is completely uncalled for. It's humorous to me that a handful of posters take it personally when anybody accurately predicts something that doesn't work out and get all bitter about it. Not every fan is rah-rah and some of us are more impartial observers than others. It was plain as day the Packers were not a contending team to me this year. Go take a look at the preseason thread and see how I was treated for having the view that I had. Getting to shove it back at some of you is completely justified, and yeah, it feels a little good to do it.
  7. Pretty sure he was late to camp due to a family death. But he was simply not the impact player he was meant to be.
  8. I love it as far as the fact that they had no future plans for either guy. Montgomery has to go down as another utterly wasted TT pick, so it's cool to get a spare part for him at this point. A 4th for a safety they don't like seems pretty solid. I hope he fits in there though because he is an exceptional person.
  9. The draft is big as it always is but they are also shedding Matthews and Cobb. And obviously not investing in Ha-Ha. I don't know who is available this offseason, but if there is an elite pass rusher you can bet the Packers will be in that conversation. Last summer I stated my (very unpopular) opinion that this is the kind of season the Packers were going to have and it would simply take longer than one offseason to rebuild. This upcoming offeseason I really expect Gute to add huge pieces and build a team that is truly competing for titles as Rodgers enters the back end of his career. They were just in too big of a mess with old washed up players to content. He knows that and is addressing it as such. I think he saw a chance to get that going early with Mack but it didn't work out.
  10. It's guaranteed he wouldn't be re-signed by the fact that they traded him. He would have been signed this past offseason if they liked him, he had said as much and was surprised that he wasn't. He had already openly stated that he knew he would be elsewhere next season. Both he and Burnett kind of stunk. Fans fall in love with their own guys, but you really need impact plays from the S position. It is one position where you need the stats. It's not like a DL who can be good without getting sacks, your S needs to come up with picks because they can instantly change the flow of the games. They have not been getting adequate forced turnovers from S for a few years now. Ha-ha's issues might be schematic, but whatever the reason he was simply not getting it done here.
  11. 4th Ehh ... for basically a half season rental. Whatever If he really fits their defense and they extend him before free agency, it's a great move for them. Guessing Pettine had problems with his game.
  12. 4th or 5th would have been my guess. I just popped over to a Skins board and you would think they just signed Ronnie Lott. Fans can be so funny.
  13. Knew Ha-Ha was gone after that weird response yesterday. Good move if they weren't going to re-sign him, which they obviously weren't.
  14. I guess the 7th rounder means you don't have to wait for waivers.
  15. Jaguars problem is not a talent void, it is an inability to handle a modicum of success. The defense is full of very arrogant players, but that works when you are winning games, like they were last year. They ruffled a lot of feathers, but you can do that when you're winning. Guessing a few of those guys took it easy last offseason and expected to beat people up again. They were a legitimate team last year. They have no history of success and are a textbook hangover story.
  16. I'll fully admit to being a Bucks bandwagoner. I always check their scores and hope they do will, usually make it to one game per year. But the NBA is just structured so poorly. So many games, and a regular season that means little as so many teams make the playoffs. Even this is sort of hard to care too much about. I end up tuning in fully when the playoffs start. I just can't follow 82 games over such a long time period. It's much easier for me to digest baseball even though play twice as many.
  17. I don't think the armchair point guard community has ever been more right in my life. Both in firing kid and bringing on Budenholzer. I guess sometimes the right call is the obvious one.
  18. It is easy to watch it on TV and say "he's deep enough to know better." It is another thing to make that call when the ball is in the air. I doubt he knows exactly where his heels are by the time the ball is 3/10 of a second from landing in his chest so you have to make that decision beforehand go with it. It's still his mistake, but I don't think he was lying or intentionally disobeying the coaches. I don't know why he's the return man in the first place anyway. He's not explosive at all. I personally don't think the Packers are any better than a .500 team but remember that they were 3-3 in 2010 and people don't remember how much their offense struggled in the first half of that season. This team lacks the defensive prowess that one did, with Woodson, a young Williams and Shields, a young Matthews and Raji, etc., but there is still a lot of time to figure things out. The last wild card is 4-3 right now so the Packers are very much in the thick of it as bad as they have looked at times. My opinion is that they are an 8-7-1ish squad, but it is possibly they go on a tear and make a run. Teams evolve in the NFL over the course of the season so much more than they do in other sports.
  19. Montgomery finally speaks and basically copied what I said yesterday...wanted to make a play, etc., and feels insulted by the talk of him doing it because he's selfish, even specifically mentioning "jeopardizing money and the length of my career" to make a position change. So there is clearly some sourness there with he and the coaching.
  20. Yes, he is a solid slot receiver because his toughness plays into that role, but when you're always hurt it is less valuable. He is also one of the better guys in the league at responding to busted plays and getting open when that happens, but it's a good thing his contract is expiring and it was way overvalued as per usual with Thompson and "his own guys." I think the Packers will be a much better team with another offseason to build the roster and more $$$ room to do so.
  21. Cobb is another Thompson black eye. A contract he was absolutely never worth. He isn't fast, he isn't big, the only thing he is, is fairly tough which I give him credit for. I doubt he is worth more than a 5th in a trade.
  22. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on possibly being traded before tomorrow's deadline: "I've got about 24 hours and then we can talk." When asked if he'll be talking here or somewhere else, he said: "I don't know, you guys might be surprised." Sort of weird but can be taken either way.
  23. Then he shouldn't be on the team. And this is my biggest issue with Mike McCarthy. He sticks out his "plans," WAY too long, which can be a positive at times but usually isn't. If Ty Montgomery is cut this week he should have been cut a year ago. Nothing changed since then. He had to cost them a game and make it blatantly obvious that he can't play before they finally woke up to that reality. He's on the roster because Aaron Jones can't pass block or something, which apparently Ty can't do either. Everyone's great grandmother can see that Jones is an every down back but McCarthy has to come to that conclusion in the most painstakingly stupid and costly way.
  24. I really don't think Rodgers getting a FG with 2 minutes left is a tall order. This is where I have a big issue with probabilities. I really think the Packers' shot at winning is +50 if they get the ball there. Even a supposed 1/3 chance is pretty depressing when someone decides to play hero ball. My opinion has always been that McCarthy lost his hold on the team after the 2014 NFCCG. It is kind of interesting to see a guy going rogue in that game come full circle today, to what I think will be his final season as coach.
  25. Doesn't matter, even if some of that is true. I have wanted MM gone probably longer than you have, but none of what you have written has anything to do with making a bone-headed play when the game is on the line. Even if he didn't fumble, it was still a horrible decision- especially if he was specifically told to kneel down. So no, I don't have any empathy for him. In fact, these hybrid players are all the rage in the NFL today, so the Packers did him a favor. Problem is, he's just not explosive enough. Well....yeah, it does have something to do with it, because all of that stuff contributed to the boiling point where he finally said to himself "I have to do this my own way if I'm ever going to make a play." Was he wrong? Yeah, but that's still has to do with what he did yesterday. He is most likely guilty of thinking he's better than he is, like every athlete. Even if the Packers cut him this week, they'd still deserve criticism for waiting this long. Basically a guy that can't play and had to get on the field and lose a game before getting released. That reflects pretty poorly on them especially since Aaron Jones is clearly 15x the RB, in spite of all that pass pro nonsense. Lot of good it did yesterday having Monty in pass pro on 3rd and 6, lmao.
