  1. There was an interesting take on the Brewers' defensive capability at JSOnline today. Since YB vs. Gonzalez, McGehee vs. Ramirez, Morgan vs. Gomez, and Braun's and Hart's defense in general have been scrutinized in various places, might as well summarize it here: Gonzalez is much better than YB Ramirez is bad and getting worse at 3B (no word on McGehee actually) Gomez is very good, Morgan is pretty good. Braun is OK Hart is average. Looks like this was more of a "scouting" take rather than a metric analysis. Edit: Grammar (owbc)
  2. I have the Ball and Glove logo with 19 HOF. Got it when the plates first came out and I wish I would have tried for something different. To many people don't get it. They think it has something to do with Trever Hoffman. Wow and wow... How about CCHAKS, AXMAN, BRAWN (intentional), UEKFAN, GOHGON (get otta here - gone) If you had two cars, you could get: WOAHS and SOLVDD
  3. Does Winter get its own thread because in Wisconsin, Spring/Summer/Fall normally last about 6 months and Winter alone normally lasts about 6 months?
  4. As a kid growing up in Northern WI, Ground Hog's day confused me. He would see his shadow and the national news would proclaim, "Oh No! Six more weeks of winter!". But six more weeks of winter from Feb 2nd was ALWAYS a short winter in Northern WI...
  5. I'm thinking this thread needs to be closed now...
  6. I think QB's get treated with kid gloves a lot of the time. Heck Michael Vick was in prison and just signed a huge deal. You can't win without a good one. Other than that I agree with you. I'll ditto what berniebrewer4life said about average QBs. Which fits in what I said earlier about being able to win in different manners with different teams (average QB+good RB+good defense has won plenty of SBs). The easiest way is to have a great QB, no question there. But it isn't a requirement. And I'll disagree with Vick. Note that I'm NOT a Vick fan (I applauded SD for trading his draft rights to pick up LT and Brees). Atlanta cut him immediately. He went to jail. Served his time. Came back as a backup QB with a pretty small contract. Played his way back in (while saying and doing the right things). Then got his big contract. That actually shows me that the NFL handled it correctly. There was no entitlement. Contrast that with the joke that was Latrelle Sprewell...
  7. and if he takes the Santana path will be 30 (and I believe a free agent) by the time he's a full time starter. [sarcasm]Yes, because we will be forced to do exactly what Santana did, because all SPs that move to the BP follow that exact path.[/sarcasm] How about you try not to take things quite so literally? I posed the Santana example because he represents a SP that started out at the MLB level in the BP. Not because Rogers will do exactly the same, nor that he is exactly the same age, nor because he should go to the BP for exactly the same reason... People were insinuating that moving Rogers to the BP signaled an end to him being able to start, ever. I was simply trying to show that it wasn't necessarily true.
  8. I know it isn't wise to put too much stock in spring training stats usually, but with Aoki that is all we have to go on. Don't forget his years of Japanese stats. I'm not sure how Japanese competition compares with the MLB or AAA (I'm guessing somewhere in-between). But he really has more of a track record than Schafer. The Brewers didn't spend millions on Aoki to give him 40 ABs and send him to AAA. He will have a longer leash than that. If ST stats meant all that much, we would just bring back Jeremy Reed.
  9. Even if Favre had been 26 and no replacement behind him, stars in the NFL aren't given as much sway as they do in the NBA. Terrell Owens and Randy Moss are good examples of that. They started mouthing off, their team put up with it for a little while, then shipped them out. When you have 5 guys playing at one time and maybe 8 in a game, it really emphasizes any one person on the team. Then play "NBA-style" basketball and it super-emphasizes one or maybe two players on the team.
  10. My manager finally quit a few weeks ago because of all the crap he was dealing with from his boss and our department. He was constantly pointing out that we are chronically understaffed. And constantly chastised when we failed to meet a deadline. So now I'm left to deal directly with his boss. I have a project that will account for about 30% our yearly sales. And I have yet to staff my project for anyone more than myself (our group is about 20 people). I had 4 identified areas to gain resources and each one of them has come up as a dead end. The last one was a contractor that I know and worked with. My former-boss's boss had negotiated this guy to work on the team, but failed to follow through with a contract, so they reassigned him.
  11. I didn't know Farve was an NBA star. There are divas in each sport, but when Favre acted up, he was told to take a hike... by two different teams... There are so few true stars in the NBA and NBA basketball is built around needing a star to win (unlike football that is much more a team sport), it leads to massive egos by the guys that are the stars and owners that kowtow to them.
  12. just me by my lonesome But you have us! God speed on your move and fresh start!
  13. Their WARs are virtually identical for 75% of their careers. The main problem I have with that argument is that in order to say that, you are throwing out Gonzalez's best 25% and YB's worst 25%. And from what I've read on what Gonzalez supporters are saying, that 25% probably represents the improvement expected (i.e. a small improvement, mainly on defense).
  14. If he fails as a reliever why would there be any reason to do anything with him anymore? My post that you quoted was referring to the question of putting him in the BP this year vs. starting him. If he fails in the BP, then he is cut and its the end. But my point was that going to the BP doesn't signal the end of him perhaps in the future going back to starting. Your comment on Santana taking longer to go back to starting only reinforces my comment.
  15. The guy is finally healthy heading into spring. I think the main point of putting him in the BP is to keep him that way. He keeps coming in healthy then having problems. Maybe the starter's work load isn't the problem, maybe it is. With these SPs that consistently have injury histories, I don't see any harm in sticking them in the BP for a year or two and seeing how he holds up. Then you can revisit him as a starter later. Johan Santana was moved to the BP because of a Rule V player, but it also helped him get used to the MLB batters before going back to starting the next year.
  16. Do they both have sons? Does one explain it to the other?
  17. To answer a previous question of "Who will be this year's YB?" Answer: It is of course: YB!
  18. I'm actually a bit of a Skiles fan. There are a small group of elite coaches in the NBA. Skiles fits in the mediocre middle group. But that is a big improvement from the Lets-hire-a-guy-with-BB-name (Porter, Larry K) coaches we had prior. Skiles has suffered from a serious lack of talent, but I thought he has gotten the most out of what he had. The "Fear the Deer" year showed that Skiles can coach defense. That was a no-offense team. They still pushed Atlanta pretty far without Bogut.
  19. Could the bulging disk be a result of too much cussing? Quite possible. He really kicks in the head-bob when he gets going. Add in him whipping his head around to find the Brewer that is stealing his signs and that might be the problem....
  20. until the deadline on Thursday. Doh! I misread it on JSOnline and thought it was today...
  21. We also would have options to put Peralta, Fiers, Estrada, Thornburg, Jungmann and Bradley into the starting rotation by then.
  22. 4. Never write down unwritten rules.
  23. So anyone think that Jennings will be traded today?
  24. Cristian Guerrero Oh wow, I think I repressed that one... wasn't he Vlad G that can play CF?
  25. Barkley is right. This is never ever true. Not commenting on contraction, just on Barkley. Raef La Frentz seemed to be traded about 6 times without ever playing a game. Nah, that was actually just La Frentz's contract. I'm pretty certain he just stayed at home that whole time.
