  1. Yet you have Jackson as elite and he had the benefit of MJ and Kobe. Any "good" coach will have "good" players. I didn't mean to insinuate that is only based on players. Jackson gains "elite" in my eyes based on what the teams did with him, then without him. Both Kobe and MJ elevated their games with Jackson. Hard to say if it was natural progression or good coaching (or both). He also seems to be excellent in the handling of massive egos and keeping players working together. Kobe and Shaq? Dennis Rodman? "Elite" in my eyes goes way beyond the Xs and Os of basketball itself. I might be discounting Pop too much, but I see something like Jerry Sloan. They had the benefit of being at one place for a long time with the same star players. Especially Pop, Duncan is one of humblest players out there. Maybe if he turns Stephen Jackson into a high value SG again...
  2. Pretty much the Bando era in general...
  3. I'm not sure about traveling with a young one, but it has been done. Don't do this without training! Seriously, if your child is not used to being in a car, take some day-trips places. Get him/her/them used to being in the car a couple hours at a time. Plan on a good break every 2-3 hours of travel. Find a PlayArea or park that the child(ren) can run around for a while. Travel during nap time. A friend of mine made it a habit to leave at night and travel 8-12 hours that way (not for me, but...). Have your SO or older child sit next to the toddler to read books, play games, give snacks. At that age, they are facing the seat and can't see mom and dad in the front, which can be frustrating. While my 4 children were that age, we traveled 7-8 hours to visit grandparents several times a year (taking one break in the middle). We only had one real melt-down with a 9 month old. All without needing a video player.
  4. Jerry Sloan is up there too. Yeah, I'd probably have him in that second level too. But he never did much after Malone and Stockton left, so I waffled a bit on him. I guess maybe my coaching "buckets" might be bigger than others. If I had Pop vs. Karl, I'd pick Pop, but he also had the luxury of staying in one spot and having a lot of talent on the roster. Talk about the Bulls being lucky with Rose... San Antonio has Robinson get injured one year, tanks, drafts Duncan - boom - instant star to star replacement. I just wouldn't put Pop in the elite category.
  5. When Marcum gave up the grand slam to Paul Goldschmidt in the playoffs he had to call Lucroy out to the mound because of sign confusion during the AB. Sign confusion would be one possibility. So could disagreement on how they are attacking hitters or in-game adjustments on a certain pitch that the pitcher can't throw well that day. Having both pitched and caught in high school ([sarcasm]thus, I'm an expert in both and no one should doubt my expertise[/sarcasm]), there are many reasons you need a mound conference.
  6. I had thought about that earlier too... Evidently, he was just "snow-birding" during the winter.
  7. This loser drinks Bud Light. I'm guessing if he drank Miller, they wouldn't have let him coach in St. Louis...
  8. I was also told that the Hormel plant is especially nice, as these things go. Well, might as well go to the one in Austin, MN then. And go to the SPAM museum. Its free. Yes, we have a picture of the wall of SPAM. if you're into paddling and nature... The BWCA and Quetico!
  9. Big Dog being traded was ok Yes, he had one more good year and deteriorated quickly after that. but no way Allen should've been traded at that point. That was the type of trade the Bucks have to make: replacing an older vet with a younger player already waiting (Redd). I really didn't want Allen to go, but I thought it was time. Just the trade itself was terrible... He wanted Gary Payton so badly, that he forced the trade. Yes, that is true. But that doesn't make all of Grundfeld's moves to be Karl's fault. There are a handful of elite/very good coaches in the league. Karl was one of them. He isn't elite (like Riley, Zen-master, etc) but he does fit in with the VanGundys, Popovich, etc... Skiles is one step below that group, IMO. Many other recent Bucks coaches didn't come close to that even... It takes a lot to combine the basketball IQ and the ability to meld personalities and egos into a dominant team.
  10. So did you mean the real HR record or Bond's juiced HR record?
  11. Well, of course, especially now with Hart on the backend and Bruce on the front end of his career.
  12. His slash line is really .2651/.3125/.3907/.7032. Both OBP(.313) and SLG(.391) get rounded up, but they aren't large enough to cause OPS(.703) to be rounded up. Yeah, I figured that was it. I once proved to my math teacher that when she rounded each of my test scores prior to calculating my average, she gave me an "A-" grade. But by carrying the decimal out and calculating my average, I get an "A". When my report card came, I had an "A".
  13. I'm sure Karl had some input on the trades, but I tend to blame Ernie Grunfeld for those trades (you, know the GM...). At least with Karl, we actually had someone make the most of the talent we had instead of all the in-and-out coaches that were more supervisors than leaders. Trading Big Dog was the right thing to do. Even trading Allen was "correct" at the time, but what we got back was a COMPLETE failure.
  14. I'll second Glacier National Park and Utah. Third! Arches was cool (although not in temps). Salt Lake City and the Mormon Tab (and said choir). The lake itself was "meh". Glacier was gorgeous, I've heard the Canadian side is more beautiful. We went to Glacier and Yellowstone on one trip. I'd go back to Glacier (not to disparage Yellowstone, but Glacier was that much better). But you have to like hiking for there to be "a lot" to do. Its not nearly as "touristy" as Yellowstone (which is why I like it) but you can find some really awesome views... Two things on my bucket list: - Grand Canyon/Brewer ST trip (probably Rocky Mountain Park on the way) - East Coast Civil War tour - want my kids to be a little older for that one. And I'm considering adding Yosemite Park to the list...
  15. I blame George Karl for a lot of that as well You mean you blame him for leaving? Cause his tenure here represents the best BB Milwaukee saw since the '80s.
  16. Before someone publishes his CS% from last year, one should note that the catcher is 1 of 4 people involved in CS. He is the biggest part of that, but a pitcher/1B holding the runner and a 2B/SS applying the tag also have varying involvement in ultimately a small sample (per year) number. The pitcher can be a huge influence. When Sheets was on the mound, you might as well ignore any CS/SB numbers for the catcher. Having said that, Lucroy's arm is probably his weakest part of his game. But I thought his release time was still pretty good. Not sure about the accuracy. But the think I like about Lucroy has been: - Couldn't block balls in the dirt at first. So he worked on it and is considered very good at it. - Wasn't ready offensively his first year, but it didn't effect his defense. Last year, he was at the MLB average. It wouldn't surprise me if he was above average going forward, maybe even an All-Star once. - Seems like Wolf is working with Lucroy in ST this year. Not sure the "issue" originally, but some people don't click. - I see improvements in all aspects of his game. Side note on his OPS. Yahoo lists him at 265/313/391/703 last year. How do you add "313" and "391" to get "703?" I get 704... must be that new, new math. (ok, it was probably some rounding issue, it just looks funny) -
  17. At best Maldanado projects as a backup. I agree with the rest of the post and this might be a bit nit-picking, but I'd say its most probable that Maldanado projects to be a backup. I don't think its that hard to see at best, he is as a starter (someone like Blanco or Matheny).
  18. My Ad-aware toolbar on Firefox is now showing cnn.com as a malicious or unsafe site. Curious. Fox News probably created the toolbar.
  19. Sorry, what am I missing here? Is he flipping the "cardinal?" Edit- ah, just caught the "name".... He hand was blurred so I thought it might be something he was doing...
  20. we're still holding out hope for Kentrail Davis Personally, I'm predicting a break-out year for him. Nothing Braun-esque, but a nice 850 OPS at Huntsville.
  21. Go for a Chevy Impala. Should be able to get a decent used one for $12-14k. Get one 2006 and newer and you will have my software providing your cooling and heating needs (not sure if that is a warning or an endorsement)!
  22. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought if you had an extra picks you had extra money in your pool? I'm pretty certain that is correct. Hereare the draft pools for each team. Notice that the Twins (with more draft picks than the Astros) have the highest pool. If it was only based on draft position, Houston would have the most. If you go back a little further in this thread, I compared the cost of the Brewers' two first round picks (12 and 15) last year to the equivalent picks we have for next year (27, 28, 33). We can give our 2012 2nd-10th round picks the same deal we gave our 2011 2nd-10th round picks (that is a raise because we draft 16 spots lower in each round). Then we would have ~$1.5M to give raises to our 27, 28, and 33 picks in the 1st round from those same picks in 2011. Not sure if that exactly works out, but it should be pretty close to a logical raise for each. So I would conclude its based on draft picks AND position.
  23. The molemen are coming (up)!
  24. YUNI And have your car egged, keyed, and run off the road???
