  1. Care to elaborate on that? Do you think players today don't watch the seams to see the spin of the ball? Plus, 600 Ks in the 70s isn't that good... that is only 60 Ks/year....
  2. A request is something you do directly to the person that can do something about it. Tweeting it out to the general public before you've even thrown one pitch out of the BP doesn't feel like "asking nicely".
  3. I was turned on the TV the other day and saw a replay of a Seattle/Packer playoff game. I flipped it on as I was trying to remember the outcome. And then Seattle on-side kicked the ball to Bostick and I immediately turned the channel. 🤢 Winning SBs is hard. You are playing a bunch of evenly matched teams at the end of the season with everyone battling injuries - whether they are playing or on IR. Small plays and weaknesses can make or break you. Peyton Manning took forever to win his first SB and had to leave Indy to go to Denver (who was focused on building a killer defense before he arrived) before he won a second. Eli also won two SBs... does that make them equals as a QB? Hardly.
  4. Then he needs to be not happy with himself. He pitched himself off the Ray's rotation with a 5 ERA, bounced back with the Brewers last year to look a bit more of the Cleveland version of himself...(heavily aided by our defense) than came back this year to look like the TB version. When you pitch below replacement level, expect to be replaced.
  5. The discussion about Priester not being "good enough" seems pretty silly after his last month's performances... but there was some chatter bout Patrick being sent down with other SP returning (as painful as that might be with his breakout this year). However, I've never quite understood the "we can't send him down because we will lose his last option" philosophy... if you never use someone's last option, what use is it to even have it?. Is next year a better year to use it than this year? At some point you either use that flexibility or their performance dictates that they are never used.
  6. I find this post highly ironic. 😂
  7. My experience with 529b accounts was mixed. I had accounts for 4 kids and was aiming to pay for 1-2 years of college (started a bit late). I ended up having 3 of 4 go to college and transferred 1/3rd of the money from the one to each of the other three and paid for 2 years of college. However, the only part of college that is covered is the tuition and books. No room and board (which tends to be really pricy). So my kids ended up paying some taxes the first couple of years because we were taking out too much (granted it was at their tax rate, so it wasn't much). Plus, the administration of the accounts was a royal pain. You open one type of account when they are minors. When they turn 18, you have to open another account and transfer money over to it. You'd think the account would simply convert... but no that would be too simple. Plus the transfer documentation was only done via paper you mail in... and pray you didn't make a mistake. I didn't do it once "correctly" and had to mail it in a second time. I used both Edvest (WI) and Minnesota Saves plans (I moved from WI to MN at some point - call me crazy). Both plans are administered by the same company, same website, and same painful interface. Let's just say that I'm more than happy to be done with it after this next school year. So, I'm not sure there is a better option. 529b accounts worked for me... but it was just a pain to administer.
  8. With losing JA, looking at sheer talent... you could be right. With looking at who played and availability, I think it is close to being the same: OL: Out with Myers (and Dillard), In with Banks, Belton, and Williams - I think this is a big improvement on talent. Banks can be an average G with Jenkins being a top 10 C. Depth is greatly improved. RB: Out with Dillon (didn't play); essentially adding Lloyd that missed just about the whole year. Technically not an addition, but more talent will be available this year. Neutral if you'd rather not look at it that way. WR: Out is Watson due to injury, but will probably return sometime mid-season. Adding Golden and Williams and Hardman. I vote for a small positive depending on when Watson returned. Neutral if he doesn't return. DL: Out with Slaton, In with Brinson and Stackhouse. This is a small negative on talent. Slaton was solid, but didn't play many snaps overall (39%). LB: Out with Wilson, In with Oliver. Wilson was a solid backup and ST player, but not a huge loss. These players bring very different skills, but I'll call it neutral for talent. CB: Out with JA, Ballentine, Rochell, and Stokes. In with Hobbs and Robinson. A healthy and happy JA makes this a top 5 defense easy (considering they were knocking at the door mostly without him). Overall, this is a negative, but IMO mostly due to depth and less on the starting end (given JA's lack of availability). For net acquisitions, I think the offense came out better than defense, but overall "talent" level seems to be about the same. But that is normal for how most of the best teams operate; fill gaps with FA and draft and develop. So what are our biggest development opportunities? QB: The NFL is QB driven. This year will be huge to see what Love becomes. Was the second half of 2023 a fluke? Or can he get back there. LB: Cooper, Cooper, Cooper. He is the key to our defense becoming studly. Only improvement by Love can impact the team more next year, IMO. WR: I suspect that with the extra focus on drops, we will see one of Reed or Wicks step up this year. Golden and Williams bring a very unique skillset also. I can see Williams being a goal-line beast. S: Williams and Bullard taking a second-year step would make large impacts to the DB. Both have the talent to expect that to happen. OL: I think the starters and the depth are both improved But there are smaller opportunities too: TE: Kraft could take another step. Musgrave also has potential to be dangerous. DL: I think the change in DL coach will have a positive impact on all of them. Clark not being injured might be enough to offset Slaton's loss. Not sure what to think about LVN, but I have to imagine Gary is going to be better than last year. CB: Mostly depth players coming from the 7th round/UDFA ranks. Hobbs or Valentine succeeding on the outside will be interesting to watch. Not much of a ceiling, but not a terrible floor either. This is how the GM game works. With the salary cap, no one gets to go sign All-Pros at every level.
  9. I will happily accept a defense that meets last year's level: Total Points Allowed: 6th Total Yds Allowed: 5th That was with Alexander playing in 33% of the total snaps and giving up 3 TDs in 6+ games. I think our biggest opportunity for gain is on the WR and QB performance. Love had a "meh" season and our WRs certainly underplayed to their talent level. Perhaps Gute thought he could get a trade around the draft, but he clearly was working on contract negotiation. He held onto him... because he could. When it came down to putting him on the field, he had to play the cards dealt him.
  10. If he was alreayd on a team and knew the WR, you can give an older guy some latitude. But a new team, new offense, new WRs... you really have to be there.
  11. Agreed. The best time to start investing is yesterday... the second best is today. I started my 401k at 22 (right out of college) and could retire at 60 if I wanted to. I started my kids' 529b accounts when they were young (4, but wish I started sooner). I ended up putting in enough money for about 1 year of college, interest paid for the second year and part of the third. The rest was on them. 😏 Behold the power of compound interest.
  12. Sadly, I think the Vikings are too smart for that. I can imagine the conversation: "So, are you willing to get to work right away and get to know the team? Nah, just get the WRs ready for me to come in during TC... I'll be in my darkness hut" Just the fact that he is signing so late with a new team screams red flag to me. Dude just doesn't understand team building and that winning a SB requires every advantage you can get. I doubt it, but Pittsburgh doesn't have much beyond Metcalf. I think pairing this with their throw-back blue uniforms would look awesome. And I'm not one for the throwbacks... but I do like this.
  13. I wouldn't either. Just from a roster management point of view that requires putting him on the 40 man. They are willing to send down (potentially) better SPs just because they have options and it would require losing a player, I doubt they create more of an issue. But the good news is that it is now June, and Chourio has warmed up. Dude just doesn't like hitting in March, April, or May. Mar-May 2024: 210/253/327/580 June-Oct 2024: 303/351/525/875
  14. Unlikely. The Brewers are far more prone to bring up a AAAA get-me-by SP than pull up someone from AA. And neither Hunt nor Crow are even that high up the food chain. Every team has players at that "level" of SP at AA.
  15. It will be interesting to see Ben Johnson's impact on Detroit and Chicago... Will success follow Johnson to Chicago and Detroit turns into a pumpkin? Will Detroit move on and Chicago continue to flop? Or the best scenario... the genius leaves with Johnson, but the HC responsibilities in the blowhard city overwhelms him and they both flop. 😂
  16. I think we have a lot of quality depth, but lacking on high end talent. Woody does of course, but the likelihood of him showing it this year is probably low. If you get a 3.5-4.0 ERA from Woody, we should probably be happy. Les Mis has the high-end capability, but I doubt you see him this year as a starter. Freddy is a classic #2. Always available, steady results of good-not-great, Much of our SP results are buoyed by the fact that we don't push them to finish 6 IP very often. That puts extra pressure on the BP. That normally pays some consequences late in the season. That is highly optimistic. I'd be happy to see them earn AAA for next year.
  17. My friend had a C64 growing up. Honestly, I thought it was boring. And I played a game consol that had 4 different versions of pong. The controls where a simple knob you spun CW/CCW to make the paddle go up and down. You plugged it into a TV via the antenna inputs and turn the TV to channel 4 (we had a channel 3 OTA station).
  18. Piggyback starters have finally come to the MLB level. It is an interesting idea.
  19. No one will ever need more than 640 kB of RAM.... Thanks for making me feel old. 😬
  20. If you have a well-rested BP, I understand the strategy... but at some point you have to let the SP try to get out of the 6th. The younger guys that need innings restrictions... OK. But I'd let Civale run yesterday.
  21. And to think it was 2 short years ago that people complained about CC leaving pitchers in too long... The Civale yank was head scratching yesterday. BP thin, Civale doing "ok" and 80ish pitches and you don't let him get out of his own jam? That was one to roll with. You know it is bad when the announcers are surprised when the SP comes out to start the 6th...
