  1. HOF-Spring Training Edition. Yeah, remember that 3B we had hitting bombs this ST that some thought was the answer to our 3B issue and then he went 0-everything for a month? Neither do I.
  2. I split this out of the Civale thread for a little more visibility.
  3. Well Jaire signs with the Ravens for $4M and $2M in incentives. I wonder what his father thinks about JA working for "nothing" now? Honestly, I wish JA well - especially since he signed with an AFC team. But I think this validates the Packer's position also.... and I have my doubt that JA is making any more moey than he would've with the Pack.
  4. On the positive side, he doesn't actually need makeup to reprise his role as Yogurt! 😂
  5. You already got good advice on what you could look for, but I wanted to touch on this comment. Without knowing your wife specifically, I highly doubt she feels this way. If you doubt that, be as vulnerable with her as you were with us and tell her that is the way you feel. The man and father you are at home is more valuable than the paycheck you bring home. Certainly, there will be stress if you can't pay mortgage or other bills. But stresses can also build and strength a marriage if you are open with her. It can also drive a wedge if people close up. Work with her through this stress and you will see the relationship grow. Your 1 year old wants one and only one thing from you: time. (but your wife will also want you to change his/her diaper too 😉). Don't be discouraged. Bad things do happen to good people. But good people don't let bad things stop them. Sincerely Cheez - father of 6 and husband of 1 wife for 30 years.
  6. Please return to talking about Devers and not about posters.
  7. Correct. It is wrong to presume that all the teams out there looking for starters will suddenly completely forget that he can start due to a few months pitching in the BP. However, they will know he isn't willing to be flexible despite being a #4-#5 SP that will most likely need to move to the BP as he ages.
  8. Agreed. CB depth is perhaps my main concern about our roster, but Melton playing CB is more about Melton than our depth. I'd imagine we might kick the tires on the 1 or 2 guys out in FA if they are willing to be a #4 CB (having a vet for coaching might be nice), but more than likely we will wait until cuts and claim someone or make a late round trade for someone.
  9. Quite literally, I turned on the game, Seattle kicked an XP and then did the onside kick. Might've been many other factors to the game, but it was the seminal moment and unfortunately the one I saw. He was very good for the first couple of years and then never quite got back to that form. I think after Collins was lost, there was a strong hope he would step into that role.
  10. Pitching out of the BP isn't publicly agreeing with anything. He could easily say to the next reporter "I think I'm still a SP quality pitcher, but this is what the team needs of me". It will be interesting to see if he actually improves his performance without the Brewer's defense behind him now.
  11. I have no problem with him asking the Brewers for a trade, but I find it disrespectful to: Ask for one publicly Ask for it immediately The Brewers helped rebuild his value after his struggles in TB. Showing a lack of flexibility will probably hurt his FA market next year. It isn't like he is a TOR starter.
  12. The "moving to the BP will ruin Civale's FA market next year" is massively overblown. Pitching for 4 months out of the BP isn't going to make people suddenly forget how he can pitch as a starter. If he pitches well, he pitches well. Him going back to a 5+ ERA pitcher is what will ruin his FA market value.
  13. Ok, MIs had a nice start. Time to move him back to AAA and Civale back to the starting rotation. Problem solved.
  14. I remember the first time I picked up an Onion paper in Milwaukee... I thought it was a local version of the Enquirer initially... then it clicked that it was satire. Good stuff.
  15. Care to elaborate on that? Do you think players today don't watch the seams to see the spin of the ball? Plus, 600 Ks in the 70s isn't that good... that is only 60 Ks/year....
  16. A request is something you do directly to the person that can do something about it. Tweeting it out to the general public before you've even thrown one pitch out of the BP doesn't feel like "asking nicely".
  17. I was turned on the TV the other day and saw a replay of a Seattle/Packer playoff game. I flipped it on as I was trying to remember the outcome. And then Seattle on-side kicked the ball to Bostick and I immediately turned the channel. 🤢 Winning SBs is hard. You are playing a bunch of evenly matched teams at the end of the season with everyone battling injuries - whether they are playing or on IR. Small plays and weaknesses can make or break you. Peyton Manning took forever to win his first SB and had to leave Indy to go to Denver (who was focused on building a killer defense before he arrived) before he won a second. Eli also won two SBs... does that make them equals as a QB? Hardly.
  18. Then he needs to be not happy with himself. He pitched himself off the Ray's rotation with a 5 ERA, bounced back with the Brewers last year to look a bit more of the Cleveland version of himself...(heavily aided by our defense) than came back this year to look like the TB version. When you pitch below replacement level, expect to be replaced.
  19. The discussion about Priester not being "good enough" seems pretty silly after his last month's performances... but there was some chatter bout Patrick being sent down with other SP returning (as painful as that might be with his breakout this year). However, I've never quite understood the "we can't send him down because we will lose his last option" philosophy... if you never use someone's last option, what use is it to even have it?. Is next year a better year to use it than this year? At some point you either use that flexibility or their performance dictates that they are never used.
  20. I find this post highly ironic. 😂
  21. My experience with 529b accounts was mixed. I had accounts for 4 kids and was aiming to pay for 1-2 years of college (started a bit late). I ended up having 3 of 4 go to college and transferred 1/3rd of the money from the one to each of the other three and paid for 2 years of college. However, the only part of college that is covered is the tuition and books. No room and board (which tends to be really pricy). So my kids ended up paying some taxes the first couple of years because we were taking out too much (granted it was at their tax rate, so it wasn't much). Plus, the administration of the accounts was a royal pain. You open one type of account when they are minors. When they turn 18, you have to open another account and transfer money over to it. You'd think the account would simply convert... but no that would be too simple. Plus the transfer documentation was only done via paper you mail in... and pray you didn't make a mistake. I didn't do it once "correctly" and had to mail it in a second time. I used both Edvest (WI) and Minnesota Saves plans (I moved from WI to MN at some point - call me crazy). Both plans are administered by the same company, same website, and same painful interface. Let's just say that I'm more than happy to be done with it after this next school year. So, I'm not sure there is a better option. 529b accounts worked for me... but it was just a pain to administer.
  22. With losing JA, looking at sheer talent... you could be right. With looking at who played and availability, I think it is close to being the same: OL: Out with Myers (and Dillard), In with Banks, Belton, and Williams - I think this is a big improvement on talent. Banks can be an average G with Jenkins being a top 10 C. Depth is greatly improved. RB: Out with Dillon (didn't play); essentially adding Lloyd that missed just about the whole year. Technically not an addition, but more talent will be available this year. Neutral if you'd rather not look at it that way. WR: Out is Watson due to injury, but will probably return sometime mid-season. Adding Golden and Williams and Hardman. I vote for a small positive depending on when Watson returned. Neutral if he doesn't return. DL: Out with Slaton, In with Brinson and Stackhouse. This is a small negative on talent. Slaton was solid, but didn't play many snaps overall (39%). LB: Out with Wilson, In with Oliver. Wilson was a solid backup and ST player, but not a huge loss. These players bring very different skills, but I'll call it neutral for talent. CB: Out with JA, Ballentine, Rochell, and Stokes. In with Hobbs and Robinson. A healthy and happy JA makes this a top 5 defense easy (considering they were knocking at the door mostly without him). Overall, this is a negative, but IMO mostly due to depth and less on the starting end (given JA's lack of availability). For net acquisitions, I think the offense came out better than defense, but overall "talent" level seems to be about the same. But that is normal for how most of the best teams operate; fill gaps with FA and draft and develop. So what are our biggest development opportunities? QB: The NFL is QB driven. This year will be huge to see what Love becomes. Was the second half of 2023 a fluke? Or can he get back there. LB: Cooper, Cooper, Cooper. He is the key to our defense becoming studly. Only improvement by Love can impact the team more next year, IMO. WR: I suspect that with the extra focus on drops, we will see one of Reed or Wicks step up this year. Golden and Williams bring a very unique skillset also. I can see Williams being a goal-line beast. S: Williams and Bullard taking a second-year step would make large impacts to the DB. Both have the talent to expect that to happen. OL: I think the starters and the depth are both improved But there are smaller opportunities too: TE: Kraft could take another step. Musgrave also has potential to be dangerous. DL: I think the change in DL coach will have a positive impact on all of them. Clark not being injured might be enough to offset Slaton's loss. Not sure what to think about LVN, but I have to imagine Gary is going to be better than last year. CB: Mostly depth players coming from the 7th round/UDFA ranks. Hobbs or Valentine succeeding on the outside will be interesting to watch. Not much of a ceiling, but not a terrible floor either. This is how the GM game works. With the salary cap, no one gets to go sign All-Pros at every level.
  23. I will happily accept a defense that meets last year's level: Total Points Allowed: 6th Total Yds Allowed: 5th That was with Alexander playing in 33% of the total snaps and giving up 3 TDs in 6+ games. I think our biggest opportunity for gain is on the WR and QB performance. Love had a "meh" season and our WRs certainly underplayed to their talent level. Perhaps Gute thought he could get a trade around the draft, but he clearly was working on contract negotiation. He held onto him... because he could. When it came down to putting him on the field, he had to play the cards dealt him.
