  1. Woodruff, Burnes, Peralta, Adames all signed through 2024 season, free agents in 2025. Hader a free agent in 2024. Narvaez a free agent in 2023. I wouldn't give any of them an extension at this point in time. Unless they initiated talks with the Brewers for a significant hometown discount - so that is not happening. I don't see anybody else even close to having an extension conversation with other than Mr. Brent Suter. Free Agent in 2024. Need to lock him up now for a lifetime contract. Only 1/4 blue.
  2. Just a guess but I'm thinking Topa up and Curtiss to the IL. I'm kinda surprised they have subjected us to the Sal Romano era, let alone John Axford, Part Deux, rather than simply bring Topa back up. How much of a rehab assignment does a guy like that need? I think it was just the Brewers giving themselves the most chances to catch lightning in the bottle. They know they have Topa in the queue.
  3. Reason for optimism. Wasn't the last time the Brewers were struggling was when Brent Suter was not around the clubhouse. Here is a tangible reason to back that up. https://www.mlb.com/news/rowdy-tellez-hits-pinch-hit-go-ahead-homer-in-win-vs-pirates?partnerId=zh-20210805-448458-mlb-1-A&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20210805-448458-mlb-1-A&bt_ee=hx5sH4YYLKK0HFzPr3RNNP2gBxKVR9rCwlvjTa4kt9QkQ6jceTKKR8CYVzmZ0TsL&bt_ts=1628170252134 While Tellez was on the phone with Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns, he got a text from Wednesday’s winning pitcher, reliever Brent Suter, welcoming him to the team and offering assistance getting moved.
  4. Not sure this is a cause for optimism!! In theory, wouldn't it be best if the Brewers finished with the 2nd most wins in the NL? Hypothetically, let the Giants play the winner of the wild card game between LAD and SD, and the Brewers can play the Mets/Braves NL East winner. If the goal is to get to and win the World Series, I would prefer the best record to guarantee the home field advantage for every series. The playoff series aren’t going to be easy no matter who they play. Plus, the wild card winner might have to use up one of its best starters just to win that game RE: Homefield - Brewers have a 34-19 record on the road. So not a big concern. Now finance guys are going to want another home playoff game whenever possible I'm sure.
  5. I'm optimistic that Lauer will do so well that people and/or spell check will start spelling his name correctly.
  6. With as much as Hand makes, and how average his season has been, it shouldn't have taken that much to acquire him. I think Washington did okay. He isn't going to be in the same class of prospect required to get someone cheap and decent. Bonus for years of control. So someone like Paul Fry we still don't know what the bar is.
  7. I hope they spend a bunch to acquire Story. Because Story is not having a great year. Colorado probably wishes they traded him away a month ago. I know he has been great, especially for a SS. But he is just OPSing .741 this year. And then you get nothing when he goes to another team next year.
  8. I guess I assumed File would be on "rehab" until September, even if he was healthier before then.
  9. The five would be?: Yelich, Peterson, Shaw, Topa. Who is the 5th? Vogelbach is on 10 day DL, not 60. I assume some dfa combination of: Ray, Reyes, Shaw, Milner, Yardley, Maile, Lopes. Escobar/Tellez makes Vogelbach expendable.
  10. Same. Lineup will keep them afloat for a possible Wild Card spot. Too much ground to make up in the division, though. Brewers would have to have a historic collapse. I know, I know ... been there, done that. The last Wild Card spot and the division (Brewers) are only one game different in the standings. And for quite a bit of the season hasn't the 2nd wild card had a better record than whoever was leading the NL Central? And if the Padres tack on more before trading deadline, it really is about catching the Brewers or not get in. So not get in, is the correct answer.
  11. Not a rumor, but lets make it one because I really like it. If this happened, we could also use Mitchell as a trade chip to unload one of Cain/JBJ and pick up a corner IF. I would even bump up our end to make this happen. https://www.mlb.com/news/unlikely-mlb-trade-deadline-ideas-2021 Brewers get: OF Bryan Reynolds, RHP Richard Rodríguez Pirates get: INF Brice Turang (MLB's No. 74 prospect), LHP Aaron Ashby (Brewers' No. 7 prospect), OF Tristen Lutz (Brewers' No. 12 prospect) Why it should happen: The Brewers rank 10th in the National League in center field OPS thanks to underwhelming seasons from Jackie Bradley Jr. and Lorenzo Cain, each of whom is signed through 2022. Reynolds would be an upgrade for the Brewers, who have a pitching staff capable of a deep postseason run but would benefit from a boost to the lineup. The 2021 All-Star entered Monday slashing .312/.394/.528, and he is not set to reach free agency until after the '25 season. Turang is expendable given the presence of Willy Adames and Kolten Wong (not to mention Keston Hiura), giving Milwaukee a prime trade chip to deal. Ashby and Lutz would also give the Pirates two players close to being ready for the Majors, while Rodríguez would make a solid Milwaukee bullpen even stronger for the stretch run. Why it won’t: For Pittsburgh, dealing Reynolds within the NL Central and having to see him in a Brewers uniform 19 times a year for the next four years would be tough. The Pirates are unlikely to deal Reynolds at all given his club control, but for a roster in need of so many upgrades, he’s their best asset. Like all GMs, Ben Cherington likely believes his team can contend in the near future, making Reynolds one of the centerpieces of the rebuild.
  12. Ditto. Of course if Thor is in the next Guardians (or Asgardians) of the Galaxy movie.....
  13. Jeff Passan tweet Full return for Adam Frazier here from Kiley. Marcano is the main guy, but Jack* Suwinski is OPSing around .950 at AA and Miliano is a strikeout machine, with 59 in 30 innings between both Class A levels this season. Makes more sense that the Pirates had to kick in money to equalize the trade.
  14. So Pittsburgh got a Josh Harrison. I am surprised to see them send the equivalent of what? A 40ish? Draft pick salary Frazier and get only Marcano as headline. I suppose Michell has some outstanding Ks going on this season and may be groomed as a late inning stud. Still, you sent money what has to his salary for rest of season for 3 guys having solid (not great) years in minors? Plus Frazier has another year of control? Their has to be more. A ptbnl? Or isn't SD a competitive draft lottery team? That future pick. This is a bad trade considering Frazier has to be at his highest value in trade with added year of control, and this feels sorta like a dump big contract trade. It's had to believe because I think Frazier was only making aroung $4M and the rumors are that they kicked in money to the Padres! It seems like a trade that will keep the Pirates firmly entrenched at the bottom of the standings. Yeah, not knowing anything about the prospects, it seems like the Pirates got the lesser of the deal and the salt in the wound of sending money to the Padres. Are the Padres up against the luxury tax or something? If the prospects were equivalent to Turang, and two prospects at least slightly better than lottery ticket status, then I would say the Pirates probably did ok.
  15. I assume the Brewers pick up someone to man the 7/8 inning. Plus pick up an infielder. I think the range for infielder could be some rental veteran having a decent year to a multiyear player that we spend Turang and other prospects for. It is really wide open. I don't see that the pickup has to be a 1B either. They would just play them (or Urias) at 1B.
  16. Athletic Weekly article trade clickbait - "Therefore, they need to do whatever it takes to improve their lineup. Joey Gallo, Kris Bryant and Jesús Aguilar are all realistic trade targets." Can Gallo play 1B? Don't pay much attention to AL. Since he is controllable, I assume it will take a wheelbarrow of prospects, right?
  17. I think you are off. Going to take more than what you listed for Scherzer for sure (not that he would allow going to Brewers). I assume more for Hudson. Not sure how much value Milner even has. And it would take more than Quero, unless the Nats think Hudson is an injury waiting to happen. Not sure why we would be trading off major league pitching in Cousins, so need to revamp that.
  18. More than likely will be Hiura who goes down when Cain comes back. I hope so. Hiura needs more at bats. Even though Jace and Rowdy are both lefty sticks - Hiura doesn't hit lefties anyways, so be pretty disgusted if he isn't the one sent down.
  19. This is fantastic news. Getting Topa back could really give a boost to the pen. I must have Topa forgetfulness. What exactly makes us get all jazzed about Topa? Was there something other than his 7+ innings from last year? I don't pay much attention to spring training. Did he look otherworldly or something? Wondering what I am missing.
  20. There was a story about how Mookie Betts referred Adames to his private hitting coach during the postseason. So there could be improvement that was made from refining his batting this offseason. I think he said he was still getting used to it at the start of this season. Could be a factor that his prior experience is not going to account for.
  21. I wouldn't use any assets to acquire a backup catcher. Just not going to get enough bump for the price and cost in the clubhouse, defense.
  22. you think people watch he game to hear what the mic'd up players have to say? if that is true, I find that to be sad. For an all-star game, I think that is perfectly fine. It isn't supposed to be that serious. I'm sure Mr. and Mrs. casual fan appreciates that part of the game. I thought it was interesting. Especially when they had to tell Freeman to warn the runner he is mic'ed up.
  23. I think it is assume the Braves would deal Pederson away if there playoff chances evaporate by the deadline. So that would interesting to see what they ended up paying for two weeks of a player.
  24. Yep- as weird as it sounds, with the lab stuff now, velocity IS teachable. It's the exact opposite of 10 years ago, when you drafted hard throwers and prayed that you could teach them control. In this case, I assume his control rating was highly desired by the team and there's an assumption that they may be able to add a few MPH, which seems a reasonable developmental plan. I've got to think they drafted him thinking they will add speed to his fastball, so he is sitting 94-95 and can get to 96-97 - while still keeping his control. See this story (probably a video online too). https://www.cbsnews.com/news/baseball-pitchers-velocity-increase/ One Apec client, White Sox starter Michael Kopech, has been clocked at 105 mph. "He improved six miles an hour in one offseason," said Apec founder Bobby Stroupe. "So, he was already throwing mid-to-upper 90s, works out here for an offseason, and is touching 105?" asked Dokoupil. "Right!"
  25. Lind had an .820 OPS for Milwaukee in 2015, better than his career norm certainly an improvement over the Mark Reynolds, Lyle Overbay disaster in '14. Lind just also happened to be on that 2015 team which flopped out of the gate and cost Roenicke and Melvin their jobs, and sent the Brewers into a rebuild. Credit aboslutely goes to whomever had the positive scouting report on Peralta, but probably a substantial amount of luck plays a role in obtaining a international teenaged A-ball pitcher and having them ultimately be an All-Star I was referring to Lind's 2016 season, as being below average. Yes, I thought Lind had a very good 2015 season for the Brewers.
