  1. You lost me there. Are you saying that Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Woodruff aren't really as good as a 2-3-4-5 should be? If so, I disagree. I would say they are all at the top end of those slots easily (if Woodruff falters, Suter would slot in). I think one free agent or trade is enough, when people are saying we need to get two pitchers, I think that would be overkill, when you consider Nelson and Burnes (if not traded away) are midseason possiblities.
  2. Over the years of reading his reports, if I am reading between the lines correctly, he has the "I have the money already, I don't have to try attitude". I could see an outside chance of a wake up call when the Brewers cut ties.
  3. I'm getting old so I seriously didn't remember. The Brewers sent a former 6th round draft choice, that has an outside shot to be a bullpen arm, but is old for his league. So nothing for the Mets other than the salary relief they wanted.
  4. I am getting used to the idea of Thames starting 80 games (if everyone stays healthy and produces), and those games against righties. Pinchhitting the other games. I would guess a .260/.360/.870 line under that scenario.
  5. Why would a team ever want to do Boras a favor? Doing Arrieta a favor then. Any reason it costs more to sign Arrieta helps out the Cubs, especially if it is the Brewers doing the signing.
  6. To me, it would seem you would need three of these players to be traded before Wren became a viable option to make the 25 man roster. Santana, Phillips, Broxton, Perez Because if we just trade Santana, Braun is going to be a corner OF and either Phillips or Broxton will be the 4th OF. Perez will be the 5th OF.
  7. I figured Gallardo for the "Milone 25 Man Spot" (that someone without a guaranteed contract has to come out of the blue to earn a 25 man spot that shouldn't) There's no way that both can split the award, can they?
  8. Trading deadling trades are more about the prospects than the 1/3 of the season salary left on whoever you are picking up.
  9. I can see where pitching so many pitches when he wasn't used to it, probably blew out the gas tank. I bet he comes into camp in excellent shape and ready to roll knowing there is a spot in the rotation begging for him to claim.
  10. You have to flip Shaw and Santana to keep the righty-lefty going.
  11. Yeah, you are not trading Santana for Corbin. If the DBacks get Santana, they are going to have to send over some good prospects to boot. I can see this happening if we sign Arrieta as we would have all our prospect pitchers in the system as we will not have traded them, and they can slide into Corbin's spot in 2019 when he leaves. I think the trade is more realistic at a Broxton and a #30-#35 prospect for Corbin.
  12. Yes...ish.. Assuming Santana is not traded, I would plan for Braun 20-30 OF starts, 70-80 starts at 1B, and 10 DH starts. Santana can get 150 OF starts (Braun and Yelich days off). Thames can get 80-90 starts at 1B - all against righties. That would be the plan going in and then obviously play and injuries would dictate changes.
  13. Stroman will be 27 this year and is arby this year and the next two years, right? So the Brewers would be trading for three years of service, at escalating arby prices. Did they go to arbitration with him yet for this year's cost? I would start the negotiations with Santana, and one of Woodruff/Burnes/Ortiz/Peralta, plus any two other players in the system not named Hiura or Lutz and see how that goes. They could have Broxton too, but I consider Phillips the 4th OF for next year. Maybe Toronto would really like Ray or Erceg or someone else and that would make the deal closer than one would guess. At minimum, Santana would be in the majors right away, so the club can show the fans it isn't all for tomorrow. And the pitcher could be in majors or very close.
  14. Not really the same place. It gives the Brewers another year to better know what they have with Burnes, Woodruff, on down the prospect list, even Hader. I would be fine with it depending on details (no trade clause?, team buyout). I'm sure the first year would have some front loading. Plus, wouldn't they be able to get a draft pick then as he would have spent the whole year with the Brewers? Or if the Brewers are out of it, they can even trade him. I don't know about following through with a trade for Archer though, if you give the free agent a one year opt out, you can't assume you will have enough pitching in 2019-2020. I guess it depends on how much near-MLB pitching that it takes to acquire Archer.
  15. It is only a fallback offer if the Brewers are willing to be strung along. They could make a move with a different FA signing or make a trade that costs the money that was in the budget for Darvish. The agents and union may be telling the players to not sign waiting for Darvish's big money first, but if a Lynn or Cobb get antsy and sign a deal, that would probably start the ball rolling as it becomes that much closer to the end of the game of musical chairs. And if Darvish only has the Twins and Cubs to play off eachother and the Cubs remain firm, he would not be as well off if he struck earlier.
  16. Check his last half of 2016. He has had more than a year of excellent pitching under his belt. This is more than a Jungmann stretch of games that he has looked like a #2. I would say a #1, but he doesn't go deep enough in games, but maybe Counsell needs to let him.
  17. I don't assume any bridges were burned all the way down, if that is what you are asking. But, you have to wait to see what money you have left after taking care of the starting pitching. That is step number 1 through 9 on the todo list. Then making marginal upgrades for half of the catching starts (will Lucroy split time?) and 2B can be looked at, with what budget remains.
  18. https://www.mlb.com/news/predictions-for-yu-darvish-arrieta-others/c-265696130 Six bold predictions article lists Corbin for Broxton.
  19. Is 1B really going to be less rigorous for Braun? Seems to me that diving after ground balls in the hole may beat up on his back and obliques more than chasing down balls in the OF. I'm not saying don't play Braun at 1B, I am just thinking he is going to need 60 games off, and that should be planned for accordingly.
  20. Kind of a hot take, but I wonder if Knebel is being talked about in potential deals? You know Hader is off the table, so he would be the only other pen option that would have high trade value. And it isn't like the Brewers haven't sold high on a closer before. They could theoretically hand the closers role to Hader and sign Tony Watson, or sign someone like Greg Holland to an affordable deal. They're not going to sign Cain and trade for Yelich only to take a step backwards in the bullpen. With all of his years of contol, trading away Knebel, regardless of which free agent they sign to replace, is a step backwards.
  21. Maybe Pina was worn out because he had to catch every game for a month when Vogt got injured because Bandy wasn't good enough to do more than 2-3 starts in that month. Assuming that doesn't happen again, and with a full season under his belt, I would think less drop off in 2018.
  22. I join you in the crazy. I don't know why everyone is trying to find a fix for catcher, I think Pina is in the top quarter of best catchers in the game. So you are really looking to improve upon Vogt. So you are trying to better upon the 45-50 games that Vogt will start. Seems like diminishing returns to throw money to receive marginal improvement, especially when we have 5 catchers on the 40 man roster.
  23. This would seem to be locked in. So what happens if Guerra (as an example, not a prediction) looks unhittable in the spring? 80% of the time they have 8 relievers in the pen, but not to start the season.
  24. I assume Greinke would get 4 years and $100M if a free agent today (from someone - not me). So you are in essence selling Santana and lottery tickets for $20M. Yeah, I would not do this. I would give the Diamondbacks, a #20-30 prospect if they paid everything above $75M. Anything above that price, and I would just take that money and use it towards any of the free agents. To my memory, Greinke had the benefit of lots of offense when he pitched for the Brewers the first time, so unless he promised to bring that luck again......
  25. I would be willing to bet that this would also add a half a tick to the attendance (and the revenue streams associated with). Enough over the season, to actually put in your cost/benefit calculation on whether it is worth it. I assume the team also has to figure if they will have enough labor to man the stands that will be selling that much more product and it will probably take the cleanup crew after the game that much longer to clean up. I actually think it may work better for baseball than football. Football is only 8 games, so people probably are willing to spend that much more as it is only an occasional expense. Whereas if you are going to 40 baseball games a year, now you don't have to worry about lunch/supper for the family, as it is actually economical to feed them at the ballpark....
