  1. mid-season article https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jeff-samardzijas-oddly-dominant-season/ Not sure how he would fare away from the NL West ballparks. So I would want the Giants paying a good chunk of his last year on his $59.4M / 3 years left on his contract. He does get hit nowadays, but led the league in innings pitched last year and has pitched at least 200 innings the last five years. I wonder if he shouldn't throw more crap to players and give up a few more walks, but also less hits to them. He had 32 starts and 32 walks last year.
  2. If Braun gets the lefty starts at 1B, that would eliminate a "push" to trade an OF, you would only be trading if you are getting a decent deal back. We would have enough playing time to spread around and keep everyone fresh, but not rusty. Aguilar is cheap, so can stick on roster for pinch hitting. Perez isn't cheap anymore, but not too expensive to keep as super utility (but less OF) player. Braun 45 starts at 1B Thames 115 starts at 1B Braun 65 starts in LF Santana 150 starts in RF Phillips/Brinson/Broxton 270 starts in OF spread around until two have earned an everyday role. Whoever is sitting is available as pinch hitters and late inning defensive replacements for Braun and Santana. Perez only gets injury starts or if 2/3 of P/B/B don't do anything with the bat.
  3. Put me down in the Santana could definitely be traded this offseason, but only for elite starting pitching. If two of Braun, Brinson, Broxton, Phillips are terrible or hurt, that would just mean more time for Perez and Thames (and maybe Villar) in the outfield and picking up an OF at the deadline if we are in it. I know it would hurt our offense, but it would also be nice to be able to get to flies that are outside of a jog radius from where the OF stands.
  4. I dislike them, but will always root for CC. So torn, until he was out.
  5. Small sample size, but Bandy had a much higher catcher ERA than Pina back at the beginning of the year when they were both playing. I think Vogt sticks around for his lefty bat if anything. Pina cERA: 3.80 Vogt cERA: 4.31 Bandy cERA: 4.87 (back when the pitching was bad in April though for the most part)
  6. I wouldn't pay Jeffress $2.6M. Offer him $1.5M with incentives that can reach $3M. Not afraid to let him see what he can get elsewhere. We can always bring him back at the midway point of the season now that he has turned into the next boomarang KRod.
  7. I am pretty sure I saw that on the broadcast also. He had so much movement last night, I don't think he had any idea where the pitches would end up. Pirates would have been better served to put their bats away and take walks, but his pitches must be tantalizing enough to make the hitters swing.
  8. They likely have a very good idea of what they want to do with the rotation for the rest of the year already... they just aren't telling anyone. If it's jungmann or Wilkerson, I'd bet good money they are doing what is necessary to be sharp for whatever start they are given. On radio pregame last night, they mentioned Wilkerson was in Arizona keeping fit doing side sessions when he got the call to come up to the big leagues. So they had a plan, for those that were worried.
  9. Not to derail topic, but for fun, Segura has brought us two playoff contention starting pitchers. Jean Segura and Tyler Wagner (waiver claim to Texas) for Chase Anderson, Isan Diaz, Aaron Hill [Aaron Wilkerson, Wendell Rijo (Carolina), and cash], plus cash.
  10. Someone from the Brewers actually stated this somewhere or is it some estimate from some writer? I find that hard to believe, as no private sports ownership ever gives out that much detail. That is why the NFL players union loves the Packers. I could've sworn I remember MA talking about being in the "red" for those seasons but how he doesn't mind doing it if they have a chance to win. Maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me and I don't have time or really want to look up a source but I feel like it happened. lol Obviously it plays to what the owner will want perceived "being in the red". I have never heard of any owner talking with that type of specifics about their profit. At best they may say they made money, even that would be rare - they will more probably say they didn't lose money. Personally, I doubt they made $27M if the 25 man roster payroll was $104M, that was why I wanted to see the source. Because if they made that profit that season, that means they probably have made quite a bit of profit all along and will have that much more resources to pay when it is time to compete from the get go (next year).
  11. Anderson Free Agent Davies Woodruff Nelson (or if not back early - Suter/Jungmann/Guerra. With Wilkerson/Burnes available in June if needed) I can see trying Hader if you assume Nelson misses at least half of the season.
  12. Knebel Swarzak (or free agent to replace him) Hader (I don't see the benefit of moving him to starter, if we sign a free agent starter) Hughes Barnes Wang/Webb (loogy)(Ramirez doesn't have loogy splits but can fill that role?) Jungman/Guerra/Jeffress (Assuming they can stick Suter in the minors to start the season) T. Williams/Derby/Ramirez/Archer/etc (any of the host of minor league guys brought up when they move to 8 man pen in May)
  13. I'm sure the Brewers would be more than happy to have him back, just not on the 40 man is all. When they can find suckers, I mean veterans that are willing to pitch in CS on sporadic days, they are always welcome.

  15. My rotation starting Friday: Fri 9/15: Jungmann Sat 9/16: Davies Sun 9/17: Woodruff Mon 9/18: Anderson Tues 9/19: Suter Wed 9/20: Jungmann Thu 9/21: Davies Fri 9/22: Woodruff Sat 9/23: Anderson Sun 9/24: Suter Tue 9/26: Davies Wed 9/27: Woodruff Thu 9/28: Jungmann Fri 9/29: Anderson Sat 9/30: Davies Sun 10/1: Suter Anderson and Davies each make 4 more starts with both getting one game vs. Cubs and one game vs. Cards. The Cub games could be irrelevant anyway if they head into them 6 back, but if they are within 4, they'll count double. and 3 out of 4 would be absolute necessity. You could line it up so the Jungmann gets only two starts (9/19, 9/30) and Woodruff (9/16, 21, 26, 10/1) gets four starts versus what you have. You would have Davies, Jungmann, and Woodruff as the pitchers for the St. Louis series. Since it would be the second to last day of the season, you could piggy back Suter to Jungmann. If we made it through to the postseason Anderson and then Davies would be lined up to pitch.
  16. If the starting rotation is so good and so healthy that even if Burnes and Wilkerson are killing it AAA, they don't get any play, i would take that scenario over being one good starter short of missing the playoffs. You can always trade Anderson/Nelson following the 2018 season. I could see acquiring a great bullpen instead of a starter, but that is even a bigger crapshoot year to year - so I would rather just keep Hader in the pen. I would say put the money that would go to a starter into a position player, but where is there a position where we can really see a more than an incremental upgrade over what we have, considering both cost and performance? 2B? Walker heads the list basically. Trade? Possible, but I don't know if there are any better 2B that are available that way either. We've done the 30+ year old rotations before. It hasn't worked. I want to try these young arms and let a guy like Burnes come up and bulldoze his competition like he has all the way through. Jamming them up at AAA just doesn't do it for me. Let these guys pitch. It's what we have been waiting for, for so long with this organization. Burnes has pitched all of half a season at the AA level and has 145 total innings for this year. Assuming everyone comes out of spring training healthy you can maybe delay his start a bit and send him to AA (better weather) for a month and then send him to AAA and have him available when someone breaks down. That way he will have the innings available in his arm to finish the year in the majors without limiting him on innings. Also helps to delay his status for cost.
  17. Better yet if Garza was DL'd and then you can replace him with someone else on the roster if we make the playoffs (knock on wood).

  19. Agreed above, but have to sign Swarzak (and hopefully Neshak). There isn't much for bullpen guys out there. Being under 30, I assume Cobb will make more than that (I assume elbow injury behind him). I would target to get him or Lance Lynn (to hurt Cardinals) and if we lose out at least we made the winning team pay big. I wonder if CC could be cheapish and a one year deal. Maybe he has the magic left for us, or he falls apart and you install Burnes/Suter. Maybe he would be great out of the pen.
  20. This is pretty much my thoughts, so I will just ditto. I would say bring Walker back unless they want to spend major bucks on a pitcher and need the money for that, but I would shed Thames $ first if possible. I would stress to Villar that if he wants to stick with the team, I want him for the obp and not the slugging and hope that will return to his first half of 2016 at bats. That way he can get on base, and we can go back to complaining about his baserunning.
  21. I agree. Very solid return considering that Houston is taking on around $60M in salary. But I think it's a good move for Houston (even if it is costly). They can use the quality arm in their rotation. And their window for winning is now - so Verlander fits right in with that window. He'll be nice arm for three potential playoff races for them. Not sure if he'll necessarily be there that long or not... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/08/justin-verlander-could-opt-out-if-traded.html It was already more than I thought Detroit would get, I don't see any way that Houston sends those kind of prospects if he also required the opt out clause.
  22. Yeah, but is that really out of the ordinary? I wouldn't use that as a reason why we would have beat the Dodgers by more, it just happens too much with slow runners coming home.
  23. Could they not just bring up Wilkerson and Perrin from Biloxi if they just needed some starting arms? They don't have too many innings on their arms yet.
  24. Yeah, I assume the staff sees something that maybe if they tweak this they have found something. If not, he will be churned out of the system after the season.
  25. I know he is young yet, but I would risk losing Nottingham and protect elsewhere. Either a team is going to have to keep him as their 3rd catcher or play him more than you want as the 2nd catcher - don't see either happening. It isn't like he is finishing strong at AA either, his July and August have been bad. This is assuming that his defense would be in the bottom 25% in the majors - am I right? As for depth, we have four catchers on the 40 man already, and I don't see us dropping one off for next year - unless they feel after he came back Susac did not show enough. I assume Espino, Torres will be off the 40. I don't have any idea where they stand on injuries for Houser and T.Williams - I assume that opens up at least one spot. A 2B will be gone for an opening. I only see Garza traded if we pick up a free agent - so a wash on the 40 man. Figure they resign Swarzak or sign a different Free Agent bullpen guy so a wash. Probably trade an OF, but also probably for someone that will need 40 man protection so a wash. So Dubon, Peralta, and Wilkerson would be the for sure protects, and that may be it, especially if Stearns goes with 39 to see who isn't protected.
