  1. 11-14 Edit for Anderson
  2. I could see Thames as a Tier 2 guy, but I think it's unfair to compare him to Carter. Thames still gets on base very well, Carter didn't . Actually, Carter obp was .100 higher than his batting average (he hit .222), which is a lot better than most of this team. The Thames of May/June (pitchers figured where to pitch?), is starting to look very much like 2016 Carter, except without the slugging. Maybe the Reds haven't updated their book on Thames yet.
  3. It was really tough to tell on replay. It looked like the ball hit off the top of the scoreboard, not the padding. So bouncing that far is reasonable. One replay you could hear it hit, so I'm assuming from that noise it hit the top of the scoreboard at least, and probably hit the yellow padding just above which would have sent it back into play.
  4. He's 27 with this arguably being his first full year in the majors. Are we really going to over-react this much to a slump? Obviously it's less than ideal, but let Pina play 4/5 a week and Bandy is still exactly what you want in a backup. I hope Pina doesn't start catching 80% of the games. He will get worn down and we will have two guys batting .200. Every team has a dropoff to their 2nd catcher. I still hope Bandy gets 30% of the starts.
  5. What would you have said on opening day if I told you that by June 22nd … Braun had spent over a month on the DL, Villar had slumped so badly that he had been replaced by a castoff that hadn’t been in the majors in 2 years, Feliz was released due to terrible baseball syndrome, Guerra would get hurt that day and miss 6 weeks, Davies ERA would be north of 5, and Peralta would be removed from the rotation due to Neftali Feliz syndrome… What odds would I have had to give you for you to place money that we would be a first place ballclub? Might as well tack on that we would have the most bullpen losses in the majors.
  6. 3.1 PA per team game. He needs to be at 230 before this game and he's at 129. He needs 503 for the season. He needs to get 374 more PA this year. That would be 4.25 per game. Not impossible but he would most likely need to play all of every game the rest of the year. Theoretically speaking, if he were sitting at 490 at bats, he could tack on 13 hitless at bats and if he is still leading after his average is adjusted then he would win.....? Now I know why Sogard isn't take walks anymore. He can't generate the at bats that way.
  7. Only 6 pitches total after the double play, but now Nova is going to hit 30 pitches in the first inning.
  8. Yeah, you have to think that Counsell will start pitching Hader in closer games and/or later innings. I still think he needs to start with the inning clean, as he walks too many guys to bring him with trouble already on the bases. The good optimistic thing thing is we won't see Davies and Garza for another three games.
  9. I assume negotiations would decide that. Not sure how many carrots a MLB team is actually allowed to bargain to try to improve your position.
  10. Yeah, but doesn't every other park have to be at least a little better than Colorado Springs for development and evaluation purposes? So its a step in the right direction.
  11. We will churn the bullpen, Garza, some of the AAAA pitchers, but I don't think we will have room to protect everyone in rule 5, especially if any team goes Padre next season. I think we should move a couple of pieces now for a reliever, we would still have ammunition for a starting pitcher during the offseason. We would only be moving substantial pieces if the reliever is that good and is under multiyear control (and would then need a spot on the 40 himself). Besides saving room on the 40 for this offseason, we would also be investing in the health of Knebel and Barnes by acquiring someone that Counsell would actually trust to pitch in a close game.
  12. Well.... if Counsell won't use Hader now for a day or two because he had him warming up for two innings, I can still take a little negative out of the pen for today (halfblue?).
  13. I don't even think he should bring in that much. JHJ had more of a hitters track record.
  14. He doesn't look like a guy you bring in with men on base. He needs the bases empty to use for the walks he is going to issue, and hopefully continue to work out of it in the end.
  15. As others have stated, we are not looking for the premium pitchers. We just need someone that is competent for the 6th and 7th innings. Preferably someone that is overpaid that would lessen the prospect value needed from our end. For those targets we shouldn't really be talking about our top 20 prospects. After that is fair game. I guess if there is fair value for an 8th inning guy I would up the prospect value. There would be additional value in pushing Barnes down so that he could match up with the 6th or 7th inning as needed. Depending on age and length of control, there are a host of position player prospects that I would be willing to trade to improve the pen, but would really try to stay away from projected starting pitchers. Here are my probabilities: Seems to me we are about overdue for a free return of Jeffress and KRod.
  16. Thank you. As long as one of Drake/ Feliz / Peralta is gone, I can go at least another 2-3 weeks with the other two while we see how Suter, Hader, and Espino do in the pen.
  17. I don't care how bad Peralta does, if he wants to meltdown, he still stays out there. I would use him three innings regardless. I am not using a real bullpen guys up this game.
  18. His walks aren't good, but no worse than the rest of the bad pen. His whip is decent for our pen. I still would have dfa'd Drake, Feliz, and Peralta before Scahill - but would not consider it to be a bid deal of difference.
  19. I'd love for Garza to get traded but I highly highly doubt it happens. I think with Garza would have to pitch at least two good games before he would establish whatever value again (even if only cash relief). If I was a contending team, you are going to want to make sure with him that he is really not hampered at all by injury. But if he can show he is doing well, he doesn't have much mileage on the arm this season, so one could make the case he won't wear down (barring further injury of something).
  20. No, I suppose you can't state he is a bad defender if he never plays defense. If I am reading right, he was the DH all of this college season and prior to that it sounds like more OF/DH (2B?). Hence the concern if he can play defense or not. Or just hope that the DH comes to the NL the next go around.
