  1. It will also be interesting to see what the toll this strategy takes on Yankees pitchers' elbows going forward. They did just lose Pineda for a year to have TJ surgery
  2. Also in case anybody hasn't been paying attention, the Mets fearsome foursome has been a pretty big letdown compared to the hype. This is the last place I'd expect the hype to be sold
  3. That's absurd. What is this? Is this "National Try and Say Something More Ridiculous than the Previous Person Day"?
  4. And the first Davies trade proposal thread started by the same author wasn't enough?
  5. If relievers can be had for this friggin cheap, why the heck is Wily Peralta still occupying a valuable spot on the 25 man roster?
  6. I keep seeing how there are no generational talents in this system. I think people are underestimating how good Brinson could be. Most are looking for video game numbers like Braun and Fielder put up in the minors. Well it may have been Colorado Springs but Brinson put up some pretty nice numbers. What's he supposed to do, bat .400+ to impress there? And Arcia won't put up the kind of numbers on offense that Braun and Fielder did but he will hit. And considering how little those two added defensively, Arcia's glove at a premium position could overcome that gap and then some. Those 2 and possibly others can have just as much impact towards winning by providing other pluses aside from offense. Remember Braun and Fielder didn't win games with their gloves.
  7. It's just a ridiculous argument. It's low hanging fruit for the chronic complainers to blame the manager when a decision goes wrong. I don't know how anyone can look at this team and say it hasn't overachieved. When the manager pulls the starter or one reliever and another reliever comes in and shuts down the rally, you never hear these same people praise the move. The problem is you don't know if the original pitcher would have gotten the same result. And it's the same when a move backfires. You just don't know if things would have gone equally sour the other way. Manager calls for a sacrifice, the bunt is poor, the lead runner is thrown out. Let's blame the manager! Manager let's batter swing away, no sacrifice, batter strikes out, runner isn't moved to scoring position, runner doesn't score on 2 out single, final out is made with runner stranded at 3rd. Let's blame the manager! It's a pointless exercise. And it's pathetic cherry picking.
  8. Agreed! I'm hoping this is the start of Brinson's every day permanence in CF for many years to come.
  9. It's Late season..... we need to have our best players up. Yeah late season, all the more reason to continue rolling with an 8 man bullpen. They're trying to strengthen it, not subtract from it. They're already overworked and their certainly not going to lean on it any less. If anything being in the race means they're going to work the bullpen even harder.
  10. Just seems like this bullpen is still too overworked to drop down to 12. Plus the flexibility they covet in positional players is partly so they can always carry an extra pitcher or two. Adding positional players to the mix at the expense of the pitching staff would also make it harder to give everybody playing time, something they pride themselves on as well. And last but certainly not least, you don't bring Brinson up so either he or Phillips can sit.
  11. The Rule 5 absolutely factors in this. If this Brewers know they're going to want that 40 man roster spot for someone else other than Cordell, then he needs to be moved somehow. Since outrighting him probably means losing him for nothing to a claim, then all the more reason to trade him and get something that can help now. I think it's obvious they had other guys they want to protect over Cordell and that's why trading him kills two birds. He was occupying a 40 man spot that they're going to need real soon.
  12. Bottom line, if the Brewers didn't want to keep him on the 40-man and protect him from the Rule 5, then get something for him, right? You say a prospect for prospect flip, the Brewers said let's get immediate help for the big club. Getting back controllable talent just kicks the can down the road. The Brewers are having difficulty finding spots on the field for their talent at all levels. If not a 40 man roster crunch this year, you're setting one up in future years. Yes, postponing making hard decisions on who to protect buys you time and things can change. But it doesn't change the fact that at some point you have to use your prospects to improve the major league team. And given that, what better time than one of the years you're in the playoff race. There are 2 other things to remember. This trade tells us that other teams view a player around #17 in our system as worthy of one of their rentals. Controllable big league talent apparently costs more, as it should. And second, with this many prospects to pick from the Brewers have no doubt prioritized them internally. Cordell obviously wasn't in future plans. Unfortunately some of the shine has come off on some of these guys, but the Brewers still have a deep system. They're deep, just not with high impact talent.
  13. So with Swarzak on his way to town and Brinson being recalled, which 2 players go? Gotta figure at least one pitcher on the way out. Is it a release, trade, demotion? Is Brinson simply being swapped for Phillips with a stretch of lefty opponents coming up? Is this the start of a L/R CF platoon between Brinson and Phillips the rest of the way? Is Phillips about to be traded? Someone else?
  14. Brinson being brought back up. No word on the corresponding move. Let the speculation begin
  15. Am I'm just saying it won't be hard to improve from a guy leading the league in strikeouts. Phillips isn't the only option. This isn't that hard guys. My comment was that it's time to infuse the lineup in various places with guys that won't contribute to setting a new strikeout record every year. Replacing the league leader is a good place to start. As an organization they need to do a better job making contact.
  16. I mean I know Broxton strikes out way too much and it's a problem he needs to fix if he's going to be a career starting caliber CF at the MLB level, but if you're expecting Phillips to be a big upgrade in that department you're likely going to be disappointed. For one, it's not hard to improve on "leading the league in strikeouts" as is the case with Broxton. And two, where did I say anything about Phillips?
  17. The problem as I see it isn't so much as placing too much stock in having a high floor or low ceiling, I think it's obvious you put too much stock in stats. That's the consistent theme here. You got way too high on Gideon because of stats. And way too low on Arica because of stats. You put Suter so high because he put up good numbers in Colorado Springs. If you weren't so stat reliant you'd more accurately peg these guys where they belong. You'd still be the guy who has a Suter or Gideon ranked highest but without the blow back. Let's say having Suter around #10 these last 2 years. You'd be getting nothing but props for that. Apology in advance but the inflated rankings for guys like Gideon and Suter just seemed like an attempt to be outlandish. A look at me of sorts.
  18. Broxton is always going to strike out a ton. The Brewers can't keep setting the new major league record for strikeouts every year. I hope this was the last of him in the everyday lineup. I know it means he becomes a wasted asset but I just can't stomach any more at bats with him squandering a RISP and less than 2 outs with yet another K. Time to infuse the lineup with some guys who consistently put the bat on the ball
  19. Please tell us more about the Cubs
  20. Here Oakland, please avail yourself of our poo poo platter
  21. The Brewers have no better scout when it comes to Sonny Gray than their own pitching coach Derek Johnson. I have to imagine he has a pretty good idea of how successful the current version of Sonny Gray would be in a Brewers uniform. Johnson was Gray's coach at Vanderbilt. I have no doubt Johnson has been watching film of every recent Gray start. Might even be able to spot something correctable that would bring more out of Gray. On the flipside, he might also be able to assess Gray and opine that he's not worth the package it would take to get him.
  22. I love how for some individuals parting with Garrett Cooper was questionable but another team parting with it's top 2 prospects was a smart move and a clear win. Give me a break.
  23. How anyone could criticize this is beyond me. A few here sound like they'd never be capable of trading a player in the minors who is putting up numbers no matter their age. Some have even suggested we trade the similar player who is actually putting up numbers in the MAJORS. The whole point of this thing is to acquire as much talent as possible so that you can trade from depth. You can't play them all. And if you can't ever stomach parting with them via trade you start losing some of them for nothing. When you have this kind of depth at a position, it's nearly like trading nothing for something. And that's exactly how you draw up a perfect scenario. Trade from excess at one spot to shore up another. Cooper had no spot on the big club and either he would have taken someone else's spot on the 40-man soon or would have been lost for nothing in the rule 5. Some here seem they will never be happy with anything. This is about as easy a trade to make as it gets.
  24. Lol, small sample alert. I have very little doubt that if Brinson was brought up for good and given an everyday spot, he'd very quickly outproduce Broxton. The conclusions drawn on so little never cease to amaze me.
  25. It's been said before but bears repeating, often we learn that these guys have been sacrificing numbers in order to work on a specific skillset or approach. And usually we find out long after disparaging conclusions have been drawn about the player. Pitchers working on a 3rd or 4th pitch or hitters focused on hitting to the opposite field for example. Rarely do we know which players are just letting it fly and which are given the OK to ignore stat lines and focus on development with the organization assuring them that their numbers will not be held against them. Regarding Corey Ray, I could swear that I read something within the past few weeks of something he was working on that would put a damper on his numbers but the organization was giving him the blessing and assurance that his likely drop in stats wouldn't lessen his status in their eyes. Those things happen all the time without our knowledge. Us fans are thinking we have a bust on our hands and the organization is as high on the player as ever.
