  1. No, I'm doing no such thing, what I'm proposing is that we don't take a websites projections as factual data and cut a player because a website says that he will not perform well over the remainder of the season. Oh, and Jose Bautista says Hi.
  2. K% is a big flaw in wOBA - sorry, but Adam Dunn did not have more offensive value than Joe Mauer last year when he struck out 3.5 times as often (not to mention Mauer had an avg over .060 higher).
  3. As is your constant exaggeration of how bad a player is. Betancourt and Kotsay are bad - I've never said otherwise. You don't need to make asinine statements like 'Kotsay is no better a defender than Branyan'....... or that 'Betancourt and Punto have equal offensive value because they have a similar wOBA'...... they are bad players, you guys don't need to exaggerate it. Some people, like myself, get tired of reading that garbage because there isn't a realistic alternative this is actually a better all around player.
  4. So we value players based on projections from a website now rather than look at the numbers that they have actually put up? Awesome.
  5. to add onto the last post, defense hasn't been great behind him during his starts either (to say the least)
  6. Yeah that .360 OBP is just terrible. While I certainly don't admire Kotsay's defense, I'd rather see you playing CF rather than Branyan. This team needs bench defense more than it needs bench offense.
  7. My original post was in response to someone saying Betancourt and Punto were the same player offensively (or something to that effect) simply because their wOBA were close. wOBA is a fine stat, but just like any other stat, it has flaws - I would never use it as a stand alone metric when comparing 2 players overall worth. I mean David Ortiz and his K rate of 28% had the same wOBA as Ryan Braun and Prince last year and guys like Aubrey Huff and Luke Scott had higher wOBA's............ like I said, it's a fine stat and all, it does have value - but to try and say two players have equal offensive value because they have similar wOBA's is a wee bit foolish in my most humble opinion.
  8. With the amount of K's he is putting up, I'm really not that worried - he's had a history of bad spring training's, so it isn't that surprising that he is showing a lot of rust. Once he gets going I fully expect him to dominate.
  9. He has absolutely zero defensive value to us if he can't play 3b, and even then he has very little.
  10. We don't need to use a single state though, that is the point - NO stat is perfect. Under no circumstances should you look at a single stat when trying to compare 2 players and make a full assessment............. not trying to be a jerk, but it's just silly. Punto turns 34 this year, was barely above average defensively at SS the last season he logged significant innings there (contrary to popular belief of some, he is not a significant upgrade defensively at this point in his career) and we have 3, maybe 4 starting pitchers on the roster that can hit better than he can............... all this while ignoring the fact the guy can't seem to stay healthy anymore. And people are saying they would gladly take him as the everyday SS over Yuni?!?!?!?!? Blows my mind...........
  11. Yet you don't have a problem when someone uses a single statistic to evaluate a players offense?
  12. Yes, he will be below league avg - but the point is he is extremely low right now, even for Yuni. Considering he put's a lot of balls in play and has a low k rate, a .25-.40 pt jump in that area could be a really big difference.
  13. What scout ever said Punto was great? Let alone multiple scouts. Again with the Cherry picking for his uzr/150 rating - that is his career rating. The last season he had significant innings at SS, his uzr/150 was 5 and Punto at the plate............... He's hit about .230 over his last 700 plate appearances, with 2 HR's and a K rate of 20%. This is all while ignoring his health. The guy IS NOT an upgrade - even when healthy. He hasn't been healthy this season so I don't get why his name continues to be brought up in this thread. Betancourt has a BABIP of .239 - he has been extremely unlucky and that will likely improve. Not to mention the guy has a history of playing better in the 2nd half. If Reyes or Furcal become available at a reasonable price - I'm all for it - but outside of that, I've yet to hear anybody come up with a serious/viable alternative that has outplayed Yuni so far this season and when it comes down to it, Yuni's performance for the Brewers in 2011 certainly hasn't warranted the criticism he has received from a select few. When you pick a single statistic and try to say players are equal because that statistic shows they are equal - it's cherry picking.
  14. Cherry picking stats leads to nothing. Punto is not an upgrade over Betancourt, even if you can guarantee the guy will stay healthy (which he can't). There is a reason twins fans started everything from facebook groups to websites in their hatred of punto.
  15. Just to play devil's advocate - he doesn't have a chance to make that error if he didn't homer 15 minutes earlier.
  16. As much as I want to say yeah, look at how many teams the guy has played for the past 5 years - he's been traded mid-season 4 of the past 5 years............ makes me think there is more than the public knows about his attitude problems. Not to mention, he's also been pretty poor over hist last 500 PA's and no way would I want him playing SS.
  17. There is absolutely no doubt Yuni would have had that ball - and how does a better short stop get to the ball on the SS side of the bag....... don't follow that one at all. If a ball is hit up the middle, it's up the middle - a better defensive shortstop doesn't change that. Furthermore, Weeks made a terrible play - let's be honest here. Really getting ridiculous at this point, people need to quit trying to scapegoat Yuni for everything. I guess McGehee and Mitre tossing the ball around today were Yuni's fault as well.............
  18. Honestly, that is my biggest fear - He puts together a good season at the plate and then Doug gives him a Bill Hall type contract.
  19. Saturday night, so I couldn't make it back in - Yes, a .300 obp sucks. I was being sarcastic because of comments earlier in this thread. Thought that one was obvious enough that it didn't have to be in blue - I'm too lazy to look the comments up specifically at this point, really because it doesn't matter at this point as every angle has pretty much been covered on this topic. Yuni could continue to play the defense he is playing now, hit .300 and 20+ homers and people would still complain because of the labels he was given by a few bloggers while playing for last place teams.
  20. By that logic, all stats are meaningless - if looking at stats over a small sample size doesn't lead to a conclusion of how that player played during the small sample size, then surely a large sample size doesn't indicate how well or poor a player played during a large stretch. You can't have it both ways and say Betancourt sucks because a large sample size of stats say so but then refuse to admit that Betancourt has played well during a small sample size when the stats back it up.
  21. Uh oh - Yuni's obp is up over .300......... guess that throws a wrench in some people's arguments.
  22. So regardless of what Yuni does this year we are going to continue to focus on the past 3 season with the Royals/M's? I'm not trying to say Yuni has a good or great career nor have I said he is overall a good or great player - all I've said, is he's played well enough for the Brewers in 2011 and he has been anything but the worst MLB player. Just irritates me when guys continue to throw out the "worst mlb player" label when a primary basis of that argument was advanced defensive metrics and specifically UZR - however, they can't admit that Yuni has played well (for Yuni) in 2011 even when those same metrics that were used to paint him as the worst now show he is playing at a much higher level.
  23. No thanks, not even at the AAA level - he'd just be taking AB's away from someone more useful to us. 4 of the past 5 seasons he has played for 2 teams, that tells me there is probably more than we know about his attitude. Also has hit .230'ish over his past 500 PA's and is terrible at SS - why anyone would want him over YB is beyond me.
  24. I'll ask the same question then - at what point do you look at the current season?
