  1. I think it is worth noting that Rickie Weeks' career OBP (.356) is higher than Robin Yount's career OBP (.342)
  2. Someday in the magical mystical future, we will stop rolling the dice on old aging pitchers on the verge of retirement
  3. Is 250 PA as a 22 year old in AAA too small of a sample size? I don't think it is and I think the line of .320/.435/.655 reflects the "potential" of a former #1 draft pick Has he lived up to that potential? Not yet but he sure is getting there. 29 HR's last year, a full season healthy, a .366 OBP He still chases the outside breaking ball but not nearly as much as early in his career. I love his hustle, his leadership, his toughness, and the way he mashes fastballs. His defense is light years better than at the start of his career As a rookie his "potential" was looked at as a Braun or Fielder. He hasn't lived up to that. He may never live up to that, but he's a very valuable asset to the Brewers
  4. If Yuni B wins Player of the Month, I will happily donate $100 to Brewerfan.et's collective favorite charity hell, if Yuni B gets his OPB up over .310 I'll be happy!
  5. wow, its pretty bad when Felipe Lopez would be an upgrade at SS on a team, but I like him better than Yuni B
  6. When Braun signed his first contract extension, he said "hey there's not much you can't buy with 47 million dollars". Prince reportedly turned down 5 years 100 million dollars Huge difference
  7. I put some thought into what I could say that would be a positive spin on Yuni B, here's what I came up with: I think it would be great if Yuni B played shortstop for the Reds, Cardinals, Cubs, Astros, or Pirates The fact that he is still an active MLB player means that someday he might play for one of those teams, and hey that'd be great! That's all I got oh, and what Stevo said "An OBP under .300 for his career is not serviceable, no". that is The Truth
  8. There is no explaining the mind of Dusty Baker. Dusty is as Dusty does man, it'd be good to get a win today
  9. What about his HR vs Doubles rate? Still too small of a sample to say for sure but that is a dramatic difference from his career norms. HR vs Doubles wouldn't indicate a change in approach though, more of a strength improvement
  10. Interesting. While I'm not (yet) fully on board in agreeing with you, one compelling argument that might lean in your favor is that in the All-Time OPS rankings Ty Cobb ranks only 25th. Most experts opinions whether based on anecdotal evidence or not would say that Cobb was a much better hitter than merely the 25th best in history, and certainly a better hitter than the likes of Jim Thome & Frank Thomas who are ahead of him on the All-Time OPS rankings Cobb is 9th All-Time in OBP
  11. I love statistical analysis and I would be extremely disappointed if the posters here who lean heavily on it here would be discouraged from doing so. The understanding of stats and how they relate to advanced baseball knowledge is why I think Brewerfan.net sets itself apart from your average every day baseball forum. There are a couple of things though, human elements, that stats can't account for, in particular that might relate to Ryan Braun version 2011: number one is that he may have been playing through injuries the last few years and that his actual ability might lean more heavily towards his rookie year numbers, that is if he can stay healthy (a big "if" for any player) The other thing that stats can't account for is when a player improves in a given year, that is where scouting comes in. It would appear that Ryan Braun has stepped up his game another level this season. Is he simply on a "hot streak"? Or has his increased strength, better overall health, and improved approach at the plate helped him elevate his game? Even though it's only been 22 games, I think that if you study Braun's 2011 numbers 2 things jump right out: #1 - his doubles totals are way down. I think that is because with his added strength he's hitting HR's on balls that went off the wall for a double in the last few years #2 - his walk totals are way up. I think that is due to his improved approach at the plate. Not sure how more walks would improve his Triple Crown chances but it certainly increases his overall value
  12. Time for Uecker to say "we're just 2 grand slams away from taking the lead!" Games like this happen. It's still early, and we do have a lot of firepower on offense (well at least some of our offense)
  13. A guy to keep an eye on in Nashville is Eulo De La Cruz, a rhp who has great velocity and has started out the season very strong with the Sounds. He could be up to help the Crew at some point (and yes, Al, I read your ramblings)
  14. Exactly true, which was all the more reason to keep Luis Cruz over Almonte or Reed, as Cruz could easily play corner outfield, but I digress
  15. Braun's career OPS is at .927, Fielder's is at .923
  16. The every other year greatness for Fielder is somewhat bizarre and something I wonder about often. Glad this year lines up to be a great one http://www.baseball-refer...layers/f/fieldpr01.shtml I look at OPS as a more telling stat than OBP
  17. Braun has talked about being more patient this year and taking his walks. Its only been 21 games, but his walks are already at 16 where his previous season high was 57. Do I think he will keep up his .479 OBP all year? No, but if he continues this approach, somewhere in the .410-.420 range is entirely possible
  18. The only problem is, with this lineup, who bats 2nd? Kotsay? I suppose I would put Lucroy in the 2 spot. Certainly not Betancourt. I agree though that Gomez shouldn't bat 2nd
  19. According to Braun, he can play SS too (!). Almonte looks completely overmatched against MLB pitching. Not as bad as Reed was, but pretty bad. He has no business being on a MLB roster, in my opinion
  20. Projections don't weigh as heavily for me as results, because projections can be skewed when a hitter changes their approach, as seems to be the case with Braun 1/8 of the way through this season. As gragmag1 said, if Braun's approach continues, and he takes his walks, I see him as more valuable overall (taking into account fielding and baserunning) and as a better hitter
  21. OK, that makes sense that they would go to a 12 man staff. I suppose it depends on how well Boggs hits in the meantime. Which is silly to put so much on such a small sample but that seems to be the way that Melvin works. I know they like Almonte because they view him as a guy who can play 1B & 3B if needed and they might be hesitant to have Counsell as the only backup infielder, although Kotsay can play 1B as well
  22. If Boggs and Almonte are both gone, then who takes the last bench spot? We have to keep one, and it will be Boggs. When both Morgan & Hart return, who are the 2 players that will leave to make room for them?
  23. Boggs being ahead of Almonte doesn't solve the problem as both Hart & Morgan are on the DL. It is no doubt that Almonte will be gone as soon as they get back but also unfortunately Boggs will as well, and they will almost for sure keep Kotsay as the 5th OF, over Boggs. This would be a huge mistake, as Ennder has already put so succinctly
  24. Fielder is great every other year. Braun is great every year. Fielder even in his off years puts up All-Star caliber OBP and OPS. I think it is somewhat of a toss-up right now, though I think Braun will put up better career numbers for longer than Fielder.
  25. Wow, it seems pretty obvious to me, but of course if Fielder signs with the Cubs he'll be booed mercilessly at Miller Park.
