OK, so it wasn't much of an idea. I don't look at baseball like a video game... I honestly don't think Braun was all that much worse than McGehee at 3B. (In other words I think Casey is pretty bad... and if you upgraded defense in the outfield with Beltran and upgraded defense at SS, having Braun at 3B isn't a huge detriment) but as others said, not gonna happen
OK, RockCoCougars, I see you wrote that in Blue... Martinez - career 2.93 ERA, career 1.054 WHIP, Career 10 K/9, won 3 Cy Youngs Phil Niekro - career 3.35 ERA, career 1.268 WHIP, Career 5.6 K/9 , zero Cy Youngs I don't get it...
I've got an open mind, but I don't understand WAR. Looking at these all-time rankings, a few very questionable things jump right out: http://www.baseball-refer...leaders/WAR_career.shtml First of all how is Albert Pujols ranked below people like Frank Robinson & Eddie Matthews when his career numbers in every category are higher? Seriously, have you looked at Matthews' splits vs LHP? Secondly, how is Cal Ripken Jr ranked that high? Over Pujols? With a career .788 OPS? How is it possible that Scott Rolen is ranked higher than Jackie Robinson!!!!? How is Bob Feller ranked at only #128, below Kenny Lofton? How do Bert Blyleven and Fergie Jenkins get ranked ahead of Pedro Martinez?!
Thinking outside the box a little: what if the Brewers traded for Carlos Beltran and moved Ryan Braun to 3B? Braun won't be much worse defensively than McGehee, in fact he'd probably be as good, and a very good hitting outfielder would be a much bigger offensive upgrade than whoever is available in the trade market at 3B or going in house with Gamel or Green If this is the "go for it" year, you don't go for it with a rookie at 3B just up from AAA or a hope and prayer that Casey starts hitting I think you trade for Beltran and then trade for a a SS like Barmes and then you truly are "going for it"
Almost all of those teams that have established closers would want K-Rod for the very same reason the Brewers did. Adding an established very good arm in the set-up role and not having to do the $17.5 million thing. The fact that that the Brewers jumped the gun on a lot of teams is very very cool
K-Rod as the set-up man and as a "backup closer" in case something happens to Axford fills a huge hole and takes care of a huge weakness on the Brewers clearly we really are going for it this year, which has to mean a new SS will be coming soon, correct? So just so I understand it: we could have K-Rod next season, too, but only if we pay him $17.5 million, right? Obviously that isn't likely to happen
I think it is going to end up being Furcal. He fits the Melvin M.O. of the "veteran player", and he won't cost us alot. Because of his injury issues it would be a huge roll of the dice in this, Prince's last year with the Brewers, but that is exactly what I think Melvin will do. I think first Melvin has been going after Hardy but the asking price is likely too high (i.e. something like Gamel plus a pitcher) and instead Melvin will go after Furcal As others have mentioned, I think Barmes is the guy they should go after, but I don't think they will
yes unfortunately, Farris could be worse than Betancourt, or just as bad. Same with Wilson or Counsell. There is no "in house" solution. They are going to have to make a trade if they want an upgrade Personally, I don't think Doug Melvin recognizes the importance of OBP and won't make that trade. He probably thinks Yuni B "isn't that bad" and "likes his Pop" and thinks "he's been hitting better in the last month". Melvin will probably make a trade for bullpen help and that is it...
He'd no doubt be a huge upgrade over Casey. Might be tough to pull off a trade like that within the division. An .839 career OPS would a great addition and would give some protection for Braun next season
Wilson is a pretty horrible MLB player too. If he replaced Betancourt in the starting lineup then he'd likely replace Betancourt as the new "worst starting SS in MLB". I'd like to see a bigger upgrade than that
I wouldn't want to trade Gamel for a 2 month rental that could just put us in the playoffs. It'd have to be part of a blockbuster trade that could put us into the World Series. (not sure if such a potential trade exists) Although yeah if we could trade Gamel for a very good SS that we would have for a few years, then yes sure
An average SS would be an upgrade as Betancourt is probably the worst starting SS in baseball. Even just someone who can play very solid defense and have professional at-bats that work the count would be a big upgrade
Small sample Counsell is brutally bad, but large sample over his career with the bases loaded Counsell has been very good. It can be argued that Counsell is pretty much done, but in that situation he was used properly in my opinion Counsell & Kotsay have value on this team if used properly. That is a big "if" though. They should primarily be pinch hitters and Counsell should be used twice a week for defensive purposes until we trade for a real MLB SS ----- Continued here: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=30545
Furcal on paper is a great addition but Furcal in reality is a guy who will frequently be on the DL, leaving us once again with who? Betancourt? Wilson?
