  1. We were not willing to spend Monopoly Money on Rollins. Reyes was never realistic as he wanted to go to Miami. We were not willing to raid our farm system to trade for someone like Alexi Ramirez. The 3 choices realistically were Gonzalez, Furcal & Yuni. The only part I disagree with that is that Yuni should have never been a "choice/option". Rollins is a huge roll of the dice for the $$$ he wants and durability issues. Furcal has durability issues too. Gonzalez improves our defense and we are only committing one season to him. Given the options, I'm good with this choice
  2. I read that as Gonzalez is twice as good defensively as Yuni, which is probably accurate. Yuni was brutal defensively "He (Gonzalez) was probably the best defender (of the three available shortstops- Gonzalez, Furcal, Yuni B)," said Melvin. "He still has good range; makes the tough plays. He is durable. "He's a very similar offensive player to 'Yuni' but he's a better defender."
  3. Begin your search of the Internet and find one "expert" who doesn't consider Gonzalez a much better defensive player than Yuni. Yuni is one of the worst defensive starting SS's in MLB history
  4. Baseball Reference gave Gonzalez a Defensive WAR of 1.1 last season (Yuni B had a 0.6) http://www.baseball-refer...layers/g/gonzaal02.shtml
  5. I am extremely thankful that Yuni B will not be back!
  6. And keeping the Brewers as a contender helps maintain and increase the long-term value of the Milwaukee Brewers franchise
  7. This is the kind of thing that always perplexes me. I'm willing to admit that maybe its way over my head. How much has the value of the Milwaukee Brewers gone up since Mark A & crew bought the team? $50 million? $100 million? $150 million? Mark A is not losing money!
  8. If the choices are Yuni, Gonzalez & Furcal, I sure hope we get Furcal! (And then draft SS's in the 1st, 2nd & 3rd rounds!)
  9. I thought about that, too. Trumbo is a great young talent but along with 1B he can play OF and 3B, too, plus the Angels get to have a DH. With Vernon Wells having such a down year last year I think the Angels would be very hesitant to trade Trumbo away.
  10. At least can we please get Alex Gonzalez instead of Yuni B? Can we teach Carlos Gomez how to play SS?
  11. Braun, Weeks, Hart and to a lesser extent Gamel & Morgan. It is not as if we have no offensive firepower. And I think the Brewers will sign Aramis Ramirez anyways and try to trade K-Rod
  12. Its not out of the realm of possibilities for K-Rod to accept arbitration with the Brewers and then the Brewers trade him, correct? He could have some good trade value going into Spring Training, even with a high salary, especially if some team's highly rated closer goes down injured
  13. Wolf plus Gamel plus Thornburg plus Peralta might get it done. And no way would I do that
  14. Wow. Thats a lot of $$$ for Buerhle. MLB Network was reporting today that the Marlins offered CJ Wilson a 6 year contract, too And they offered Pujols 10 years and supposedly now that Pujols might be turning that down, the Marlins might go after Prince as well! They are spending money like it is Monopoly money... Boardwalk! Park Place, put them hotels up and hope for a roll of the dice
  15. And Nyjer Morgan in CF with the great fielding Carlos Gomez on the bench most of time. And a manager who would start a Mark Kotsay type in CF too sometimes, even in the playoffs! And Corey Hart in RF. We're talking a brutal defensive team overall. And we're losing solid utility defensive players in Counsell & Hairston, too Last year they got away with it to a degree with the 1-2 offensive punch of Braun/Fielder. That is done. The 2011 Brewers were to a large degree a reaction to the 2010 Brewers in terms of upgrading the pitching. I was hoping that Melvin would recognize defense as one of our biggest weaknesses and work to upgrade our defense for 2012, at the very least at SS. (Gamel should be a defensive upgrade over Prince)
  16. Probably Gamel at 1B, Green at 3B and Yuni at SS with unknown league-minimum reclamation project RH to back-up 1B/3B and Maysonet as backup SS. I doubt we'd pay $3MM for Casey or more than league minimum for a utility guy when we're paying $14MM for our setup man. Other than that, yes. K-Rod could really bind us up financially by accepting arby. Maybe karma is catching up with us for laughing at the Mets when we gave up nothing to get K-Rod. My first instincts are that it'll be good that we have K-Rod and Axford in the 8/9 spots because we may have a tough time scoring runs! (Although maybe not, as we'll still have Braun, Hart, Weeks) K-Rod accepting arbitration could end up being a blessing in disguise if Aramis & Jimmy Rollins & Furcal all prove to be over the hill in a few years. Another way to look at it is that if we keep K-Rod and make no improvements at SS & 3B and go with Gamel at 1B, we could be in a position to get several great players at the deadline in July by trading K-Rod, Greinke, Marcum, etc
  17. And if we have to take on K-Rod, we are stuck with Green/McGehee at 3B and Yuni B at SS?
  18. Aram and Yuni B on the left side of the infield could possibly be one of the worst fielding tandems in MLB history. Bad enough that it could actually make it more difficult to extend Greinke. Seriously I wonder if there is any way we could trade for Alexi Ramirez? Probably not as the White Sox are asking for "sky high" returns on Alexi http://chicago.sbnation.c...ale-alexei-ramirez-trade
  19. I'm already getting alternatively depressed & angry just thinking that bringing Yuni B is even a possibility.
  20. Good point. I really didn't word my response carefully enough. In general I am in favor of using young prospects and giving them a chance, both because it balances out the payroll and because that is how a player develops. I do have high hopes for Gamel. I'm not predicting that McGehee will be better than Green in 2012, instead just overstating the obvious that at least we know McGehee has hit MLB pitching before. i.e. we just really don't know about either of them. Green's minor league numbers are better than Casey's were and we could the extra LHB in the lineup.
  21. I believe the Brewers are thinking they need a new power hitter, thus the long look at Ramirez. Ramirez also likes living in Chicago and raising his family there, so Milwaukee seems like a good fit, relatively easy commute for him.
  22. I just don't see the Brewers going into 2012 without at least a new SS or 3B. But then I've been surprised before (such as the 2009 pitching staff). Melvin's inability to see Yuni B as the worst starting SS in MLB is more than a little scary
  23. My wife and I were laughing at the Miami uniform during the Heath Bell interview but our 8 year old kid thought it looked "cool". So what do us old folks know, anyways?
  24. I actually think Casey McGehee has a very good chance to bounce back and put up similar numbers to 2009/2010 ... I don't see how anyone can reasonably predict that Gamel or especially Green will be better than McGehee in 2012! At least McGehee has proven that he has hit MLB pitching in the past. (I do think Gamel will be a good solid .800-.820 OPS guy, by the way) With Hairston/Counsell & Prince all gone, it is a complete no-brainer that McGehee will be back and the Brewers are hoping for the best with him
