  1. 3 years $27 million vs 3 years of $450,000 per year out of a top prospect pitcher. I think the Brewers need to get younger with their pitching staff
  2. Meant to add: I think trading Corey Hart could bring a fairly significant pitching prospect. Hart is a very good player signed to a pretty affordable contract for 2012 & 2013. Overall I would much prefer trading for 3 or 4 excellent pitching prospects than shelling out big money to extend Greinke and/or Marcum. Greinke is a career 3.82 ERA, 1.250 WHIP guy, I don't think he's worth a huge money contract I would prefer to go into 2013 with Fielder & Peralta, Thornburg plus 3 or 4 top young pitching prospects than going into 2013 with big money shelled out to Greinke, no Fielder, and not much in pitching prospects other than Thornburg & Peralta And I think there's every reason to believe that Caleb Grindl could be just as good as Corey Hart
  3. This is just what I would try to do: I'd look to trade Marcum, Hart & Gamel for young, solid pitching. You can never have too much pitching With the money saved from trading Hart & Marcum, I'd think I could afford Barmes as well as just bite the bullet and make the big move of re-signing Prince Fielder I'd start Caleb Gindl in right field and have Morgan as the 4th OF. (I'd prefer Carlos Gomez starting every day in CF, I believe he's turned the corner with his hitting and with Barmes & Gomez there'd be improved defense) I'd start Taylor Green at 3B with McGehee backing him up. The loss of Marcum from the rotation in 2012 would not be insignificant, but I'm unsure about Marcum anyways. His trade value is likely down, but given how well he's pitched in his career, I think a team like the Yankees would take a chance on him in exchange for a good prospect.
  4. I was going to add: I love Caleb Gindl's potential. I think he's going to eventually make Corey Hart expendable and I think he has a real chance to be better than Hart. An .862 OPS as a 22 year old in AAA ball is plenty impressive http://www.baseball-refer...ayer.cgi?id=gindl-001cal
  5. Brock Kjeldgaard is an interesting story. His development as a hitter was delayed as he was originally a pitcher in '06 & '07 and that didn't exactly work out. 18 HR's as a 25 year old in High A ball isn't as impressive until you realize that was just his 4th season as a Non-Pitcher. He's got legit power and his OBP is usually 60-70 points higher than his BA, too. He played alot of outfield last year as well as 1B. http://www.baseball-refer...ayer.cgi?id=kjeldg001ril
  6. I'm going to call small sample on that one, despite that the fact that LHBs had a 90 point better OPS against Loe than RHBs in '11... career wise, LHBs have an .837 OPS against Loe, as opposed to a .675 OPS for RHBs. I remain convinced that Loe should very rarely face LHBs, certainly not in a close game
  7. Is that even mathematically possible, considering that there will be an interleague game every day?
  8. You are probably correct. 15 games a year would not weigh that heavily on a teams personnel moves.
  9. And Jeff Suppan so he can start on Opening Day, in the playoffs, and every fifth critical game in between.Yep! Lots of small ball will now be played at Wrigley. Somehow I get the feeling that Alfonso Soriano isn't a "Sveum" type player. Looking forward to the first time Soriano ignores the bunt sign and swings away, and the camera cuts to Sveum as he quietly burns inside. Sveum also has the potential to be pretty entertaining arguing with umpries. Maybe not full-on Ned Yost like ballistic, but close
  10. I won't go if they re-sign Yuni B
  11. Dear god I hoe not. I don't think he's that dumb. We're talking about a manager who started Mark Kotsay in CF in a playoff game and who continued to let Loe pitch to LHB's. He also continued to use Loe in the 8th inning until we aquired K-Rod. The only way to guarantee that RR won't consider Loe in the set-up spot is to not resign Loe or to give RR such a better & obvious option for a set-up man that Loe wouldn't be considered
  12. "Ever" is a big word. It completely depends on the negotiations. If Axford continues to be an elite closer, he could get $15-$25 million in Arbitration in a few years. Buying out those Arbitration years with a smaller yearly amount spread out may be desireable. Or not. But I would never say never. Axford is making, what? $450,000 a year. If he came to the Brewers and asked for $24 million spread out over the next 6 years (i.e. $4 million a year), you gotta think they'd consider it. The shelf life of closers is usually pretty small. Maybe Axford might be willing to take the risk of missing out on bigger money down the line to guarantee that he sets up his family nicely for the next several generations. For all we know Aford makes $450,000 in '11 and something similar in '12 and then blows out his arm and never makes big money
  13. I'm expecting the Cubs to now sign Mike Cameron so that Sveum can bat him lead-off
  14. Oh man, didn't think of that. That is almost a bigger nightmare scenario than seeing Fielder in a Cub uniform
  15. I agree and I don't think the importance of that can be stressed enough. Fairness in scheduling is very important to the integrity of the game, and in that way this change is a major improvement from the current set-up I wonder how this will change NL teams' strategy in terms of player personnel. Suddenly, a player like Prince Fielder makes more sense for a NL team. As he ages he'll be less desireable at 1B but at least he can DH for the interleague games, etc. Maybe it won't make a huge difference, maybe it will. Carrying a Russell Branyon, aging David Ortiz/Jason Giambi type player on an NL squad makes more sense now though
  16. 3 years with a club option for a 4th. Is that somewhat out of the ordinary? Didn't Roenicke and Macha only get 2 years with an option? I could see Ed Sedar joining Dale in Chicago
  17. My concern is that Roenicke will again look at Kameron Loe as a credible 8th inning option if he doesn't a very clear and solid 8th inning guy...
  18. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/134055518.html Interesting
  19. OK...so now that the Astros moving to the AL is official, is the above breakdown official, too? I was against this move, but if its a done deal there's no point in me whining about it and so looking on the bright side of things, it would be cool/interesting/intriguing to play the White Sox and other AL Central teams every year.
  20. I would prefer not to extend Marcum. I think that money could be spent in better ways, and I'm not sure what happened to Marcum in the stretch run and postseason. Would be very happy with extending Greinke. Unsure about Axford. I think he'll be very good for years but you never know, closers can be iffy/inconsistent from year to year. Depends on the $$$
  21. Casey McGehee.... So does this mean Braun or Hart plays 3B? I think Hart should be moved to the bullpen but only pitch to RHB's, except, ooops, then we'd need a new manager. Oh, and maybe Yuni B could be the new hitting coach when Sveum gets hired by whoever
  22. Except Bill Hall. We need to reaquire Bill Hall and have him pitch
  23. Casey McGehee.... Weeks at SS and McGehee at 2B might even be worse defensively than Betancourt at SS and Weeks at 2B... well, probably not, but maybe.
  24. The chances of Weeks ever setting foot at SS are just about zero. Even if the starting SS and backup SS and utilty guy were all injured in the same game, Braun or Gomez or Taylor Green would play at SS long before Weeks. And then the next day they'd bring up a SS from AAA And just to appease the OP, say they did move Weeks to SS (which they won't, but say they did) then who plays 2B?
  25. His last 2 "down" years he hit 32 and 34 home runs, and had a .871 and .879 OPS. I'm not sure where your getting the 29 hrs from, but who cares if he has a .276 BA, his OBP has been over .400 the last 3 seasons. Good point about the OBP... that said: Its all relative, but you pay a guy $20 million a year to hit like he did in '11, '09 and '07, (OPS of .981, 1.014, 1.013) and not like he did in '10, '08 and '06 (OPS of .871, .879, and .831) Fielder isn't consistently hitting like a Superstar. Its every other year with him. He wants Pujols money but he doesn't produce like Pujols consistently every year This year was Pujols' worst year and he still hit 37 HR's
