  1. Why pay an injury prone SS that kind of money when you could just give it to Prince, a guy who plays 162 games a year? Unless you think Prince will end up getting alot more $$$ than Reyes. Maybe, but I'm not completely convinced of that
  2. Narveson certainly has trade value as he's been a fairly solid starter and would be under team control through his arby years. The Brewers need to be 100% sure about Marcum before they trade any pitchers though. I'm a bit scarred (and scared) by the 2009 & 2010 Brewers and what happens without great pitching. You get a couple injuries and all of sudden you are relying on AAAA guys in important games. Ugh. Scary. Sure they have Gallardo & Greinke & Wolf. But if Marcum is an unknown quantity (I'm hoping he just slumped at the end), no way do you deal Narveson
  3. Yuni B is the worst starting SS in MLB. And has been several years in row. Therefore he should be a backup or aka a "scrub". All semantics aside, he belongs on the bench, someone else's bench
  4. As a back up CF?Ha! Good one. Actually Doumit would be the perfect replacement for Kotsay if for nothing else that Roenicke won't be tempted to play him in CF. Doumit made $5.2 million this year. I would think the Brewers would want to pay alot less for a sub than that... not sure how much less Doumit would accept or how many teams would want him. I'm thinking a backup catcher who can get a .330 OBP and play OF & 1B is pretty valuable. Thats a pretty big step up from the Wil Nieves/Johnny Estrada types
  5. I'm not positive. Nov 23 is the last date for former club to offer salary arbitration, and Dec 12 is the last date to tender contracts ... As for Carroll and Scutaro: I'd be thrilled with either of them becoming Brewers, especially Scutaro (or honestly, both. Carroll would be great as the utility guy). But then I'm a big fanatic of OBP
  6. yeah I took a longer look at his career stats and he does have better career numbers from the left side than right. He really struggled in 2010 throwing out only 11% of baserunners but other than that season he's been solid if not spectacular
  7. Al from Al's Ramblings mentioned Doumit as a possible free agent signing and it makes alot of sense. Doumit could platoon with Gamel at 1B as needed, back-up Lucroy at Catcher, play a little OF as needed and provide some solid pop off the bench... I like his career .334 OBP (.353 OBP last season) and he's only 30. His career 25% caught stealing percentage as a Catcher ain't bad either (Lucroy's is 29%) Doumit would be a solid upgrade over Kottaras and likely not super expensive. Sounds like the Pirates will decline his option
  8. Resign Beltran? I suppose maybe... but they need more than just one hitter. With that pitching staff, if they get a couple very good hitters they could get right back in the World Series the things is, it isn't in Melvin's MO to trade for prospects, he's more into trading our prospects away
  9. I meant to add: I could also see the Giants getting into the Pujols/Fielder sweepstakes which might make Belt more expendable (though Belt can play OF)
  10. Is it possible that the Giants would trade a prospect like Belt for a proven hitter like Hart? The Giants seem like they are in "win now" mode and desperately need hitting and might not be willing to wait on Belt, and need a power hitting corner OF. We need a new 1B Belt struggled this year but put up big numbers in the minors (1.052 OPS) and is highly regarded. I suppose some might look at Belt as just another Gamel but I think Belt has a higher ceiling
  11. So... what (possibly) would be a move we don't see coming this time around? Trading for an All-Sstar 1B or potential All-Star 1B? Who might fit that category? And how? (we don't have a ton of trade chips, do we?) Narveson plus who plus who for the mythical All-Star 1B? I'm not seeing it But thats the point, the trade we don't see coming. I suppose one would look at which franchises have great 1B's with even greater 1B's poised to take over
  12. Not quite getting why people are thinking that Hart would be a defensive upgrade over Fielder at 1B. I think he actually could be worse and maybe alot worse. Hart seems pretty gangly and uncoordinated (relatively speaking, for a pro athlete) and he hasn't played 1B in many years. I just don't see Hart being very good at 1B Gamel, however, would likely be a significant defensive upgrade over Fielder. Gamel is very good at fielding groundballs (his problem at 3B was throwing errors)
  13. Barmes, Carroll, Scutaro all represent upgrades over Betancourt. Scutaro and Carroll in particular because of their OBP. Carroll has a .358 career OBP (but at 37 is he too old for fulltime SS work?) I think Carroll is a guy I could see the Crew going after. Barmes is younger with great D but his OBP really isn't anything special. Ronny Cedeno has a Yuni-esque OBP. No thanks... Rollins & Reyes, I agree, will be too expensive I like Alexei Ramirez alot (awesome defense and a good enough hitter) and would be thrilled if we traded for him Furcal is too injury prone I cannot imagine the Brewers actually paying Betancourt $6 million
  14. This is true. I don't think Prince Fielder's career .192 batting average in the postseason is going to hurt him in free agency. Hopefully Marcum just went through a slump or ran out of gas. With his injury history, it makes for a little extra concern that something happened that could effect him into next year. If he did just run out of gas, perhaps they need to pace him a little in 2012 to save him for a postseason run... As much as I'd like to have Brett Lawrie playing 3B for us for the next 5-6 years, I'm one of the people who thinks we wouldn't have made the playoffs in '11 without Marcum. You gotta figure he's a big part of our plans for '12
  15. A 36 year old who posted a .788 OPS in 2011 is not what I'd be looking for at 1B. I do think he'd be a great replacement for Kotsay though. He'd be a much much better 4th OF than Kotsay in terms of power production off the bench. Too expensive for a sub though
  16. I think if the Brewers had started the season with K-Rod and Hairston and if in April we had known they'd only need 6 starting pitchers the whole year, many might have predicted 95-96 wins. I think the main reason they exceeded expectations was great overall health of the pitching staff and picking up K-Rod and Hairston. I predicted them to win 89
  17. 1993-2004 they were a sub .500 team. I suppose one could blame that 100% on Wendy and not Bud but I just don't buy that. Maybe I should re-think that.
  18. I think the Molina thing was him "revving the engines on his motorcycle" type of motion.
  19. Looking back, I guess they did have a good team in 1992, but most of the years after 1983 the Brewers had one of the worst teams in baseball. '84, '85, and '86 were disasters. And I blame Selig in part for the strike in 1994-1995. He's the only commissioner to cancel a World Series since 1904! As Faye Vincent said "The Union basically doesn’t trust the Ownership because collusion was a $280 million theft by Bud Selig and Jerry Reinsdorf of that money from the players. I mean, they rigged the signing of free agents. They got caught. They paid $280 million to the players. And I think that’s polluted labor relations in baseball ever since it happened. I think it’s the reason Fehr has no trust in Selig." MLB had very serious problems after that strike as fans stayed away. Many fans (including myself) were very angry. And it wasn't until steroid freaks started bombing HR's left and right that fans started coming back. And despite what he says, I think Selig looked the other way on the steroid thing for a long time because it generated revenue I dunno, I just think you gotta have some real rose-colored glasses or be a revisionist historian in order to see Bud Selig in a positive light Except for the fact that he brought baseball back to Milwaukee. That was awesome. But that doesn't change the rest
  20. I wouldn't call him evil, and I don't hate him... But I very seriously doubt the Brewers would have made the playoffs in '08 or '11 if the Selig family still owned the team. It was very very hard to root for the Brewers through most of the 2 decades before Mark A bought the team. I get the whole "we love him because he brought baseball back to Milwaukee", honestly I do, but Mark A seems more concerned with building a winner than Selig ever did from 1990 on...(and yes I realize he was the Commish from 1992 on, but don't you think he had a hand in the Brewers during the 90's and 00's until Mark A bought the team? And yes, I know that Selig's defenders point to the poor management of the team after Wendy Selig-Prieb took control as proof that Bud Selig was not working behind the scenes!) Maybe it is Wendy Selig-Prieb that I really should have a problem with. But I always assumed that Bud was the one directing Wendy to use the Brewers as a tax write-off And then there was Selig's part in the owners' collusion in 1985-1987 resulting in the owners paying 280 million dollars in damages to the players.
  21. I think there are ways that Melvin can help Ron Roenicke next season: don't give him a Mark Kotsay type that Roenicke could be tempted to play in CF. Make sure only Gomez, Morgan , and Schaefer are CF possibilities. Give him back end of the bullpen pitchers so he's never tempted to use Loe in the 7th 8th or 9th (or even better get rid of Loe!). Get him someone other than Betancourt to play SS. Don't start out the season with a Wil Nieves type as your backup Catcher There is alot to like, in my opinion, about Roenicke, but hopefully Melvin will learn from a few of Roenicke's weaknesses and stock the team accordingly My fear remains that Melvin doesn't think Betancourt is "that bad", doesn't see the big deal of starting Kotsay in CF, thinks highly of the Wil Nieves types, doesn't realize Loe should never pitch to lefties etc etc
  22. I personally would never put Ennder on Ignore I think Gamel could be just as valuable offensively to the Brewers next year as David Freese is to the Cardinals this year (with hopefully better durability!). They have very similar minor league numbers Now, Freese wouldn't replace Prince Fielder either, but that kind of production is valuable to a team. Some people don't think Gamel will hit enough HR's to be a 1B (Lyle Overbay syndrome?) and that you need power numbers from a 1B. I agree with that to a degree, but I do think the Brewers need to give alot of playing time to Green & Gamel next season and see what they can do. A small market team needs production out of young players that are developed in the system I wouldn't trade away any pitching in the offseason. You can never have enough pitching. You trade Marcum & Greinke at the deadline if you are out of it and they can't be extended (I wouldn't extend Marcum, but I would extend Greinke) but not in the offseason. Plus I don't think Marcum's trade value is super high right now. Maybe he just slumped at the end but with his injury history I'm sure MLB GM's are seeing "red flags" with Marcum
  23. Prince is due for a down year next season anyways: every other year in his career has been up/down. It'll be interesting seeing him boo'ed at home in a major market city if he signs for more than $150 million and then struggles, and how he handles that...
  24. Absolutely correct on all points, in my opinion. The Brewers were a completely different team when Gomez was on defense. Defense is extremely important, and its perhaps even moreso important at CF on the Brewers when surrounded by poor defense throughout most of the rest of the field. Maybe they add a Gold Glove caliber SS and Gamel ends up being great defensively at 1B (I think he might) and then you can start to justify a poorer defender in CF like Morgan but I really don't think so...great teams usually have great defense up the middle And while its a small sample, Gomez hit better than Morgan in the post-season...
