I think it does. This team needs front line pitching badly. With this team's failure to develop front line pitching under Melvin, waiting another year for a 1st round pick closes the window even more with the Braun/Yo/Weeks/Hart core. This can't happen to a team that need pitching asap, imo. 1) It is not like Covey would have been in the majors ready to be a front line starter any time soon. As mentioned before it took Odorizzi to years or short season ball before he even made it to Wisconsin. Now Covey would have probably been moved a little faster than that but the Brewers not not like to rush most pitchers through the system except for a few older 24/25 year olds like Fiers and Lomantagne. Have to believe 2014 would have been the earliest he could have helped (11' in A, 12' in AA, 13' AAA....which is extremely aggresive) Many rookie pitches don't jump straight to the front of the rotation so say it takes him one year of decent ball to really work his way as a number 2 guy. That is 2015 for best case scenerio that he could be the front of the line guy that we need. It may be just me but 2015 is a little far away to be considered a set back. Heck by 2015 Odorizzi may already have a ROY and CY Young in his case http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif lol 2) When I saw this it made me think of the JSOnline comment board but you can't really classify the Brewers lack of developed SP's to Doug Melvin because he doesn't really do that much when it comes to the draft. You could say under Jack Z or now blame Bruce Seid but not Melvin. Melvin can only be blamed for the the FA signings brought in or the pitchers he has traded for. When it comes to the draft, he puts it in his scouting directors hands and I think sets the budget for what they can afford to spend on picks. Thats really all. So yeah Melvin hasn't brought in front of the line pitching VIA FA or trades but Jack Z didn't bring many in VIA draft.
-
Well if we draft him in 3 years, I don't think it would really put us to far behind...Odorizzi didn't make it to Wisconsin until his 3rd season pro so if they would have taken him as slow as they did Jake, the time table wouldn't be to far off. Now that is also a couple of really big IF's. Who knows what he will be in 3 years or what his tim table would have been but seeing as Rivas and Rogers are both still in AA, Scarpetta in A+, Odorizzi in A and only Heckathorn and Peralta have gotten a bump out of all our other top pitching prospects, I have a feeling they would have moved him slow to start.

Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 21-50
YoungGeezy replied to colbyjack's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Brewers scouting departmant is one of the best out there at signing all there high picks and most mid-round picks....your post was before the Covey news came out so can't fault eighter of you two but really you couldn't ask for much more when it comes to Brewers signing picks. Now with 2 million freed up on our budget, how about we give Gibson a ring and give him that first 2 round money he wanted? He lost a big high school arm so mid as well sign the 2nd or 3rd best one we drafted (Not sure who is better, him or Pierce) -
Well put and I couldn't agree more! I personally don't have it but I have learned a lot in the past couple years about it and it is a difficult thing to deal. 3 varsity football players I coach have diabetes and I see what the go through and they all have pretty much learned to manage (occasionally they have to go check there numbers or run a get some skittles during practice) but after having to quickly give one of them an insulant shot during a practice last year, it became really real for me. I didn't mean to attack X ellence it just bugs when people talk about a serious thing and brush it off as nothing and no biggy.

He has to be ready for school in about a month(give or take) and he could stay home and get ready for just baseball in about 6 months. I doubt he makes a 2 hour commute each day to school.haha, the kid just found out he had type 1 diabetes, that is not a easy thing to deal with. Yeah he could have just stayed home for 6 months but after that he is all alone and away from his family for the next 7 months. Even if it is a 2 hour drive he still has the option to go home whenever he wants, if he signed all he gets to do is live on a bus and/or hotel. The kid was willing to turned down over 2 million dollars because he truely felt that it was the right decision so it is crazy to sit here and second guess him. Plus you have much more support at a college than you do in the pros. College athletes get babied, and that is just D-III, D-I they get everything they want and all the help they need. Sidenote, comparing this to Morrow is absurd. Morrow didn't find out within a day or two of the signing deadline. It is a life changing/ eye opening moment for the kid, no reason to judge him or insult his family. Business wise yes, bad decison, life wise, correct decision. Not everything in life is completely about money, he did what he felt he needed to do. Who are you to judge X ellence. If you didn't find out that you had type one diabetes right before the signing deadline you can't. Plus he talked to Brandon Morrow and Morrow helped him come to his conclusion.

This is the Covey exclusive http://baseballbeginnings...16/dylan-covey-exclusive It explain how diabetes his related. Really as heart broken I am about him not signing, to me me it is very understandable and he did the right thing. People may disagree or say "whats the big deal" but if you put yourself in his shoes you'd understand. Type A diabetes is a [expletive deleted] to have and it takes awhile to adjust, your whole life changes. So yes there are pro players who battle through it without a problem but that is because they learned to deal with it long ago. It is really hard to claim that the pros would make the transition to his new life easier than it would be in college. I wish him the best and we will see what happens in 3 years (edit: language... please don't circumvent the cuss filter --1992)

To me, Willie Randolph just fits the bill for the type of players we have. It gives him a chance to play the style of baseball he prefers and not let all our speed go to waste. I was 100% him being fired from New York, the mets slumped to start the season (34-35) the year after a second place finish (which at the time was a disappointment coming off a 97 win first place finish in 2006. There is no doubt that Hart, Escobar, Cain, Braun, Weeks, Gomez steal total will drastically jump up. In 207 Wright snagged over 30, Reyes 70, Beltran over 20 and there is no reason why all those guys mentioned above should not be able to at least steal 20+ bases a season. The only problem I have with bringing in Money or Listach is because they are Brewer greats...I would never want to see those two or Cecil Cooper, Robin Yount or even Dale manage this team because no matter what once they become manager everyone will hate them, tear them apart, and scream for them to be fired. That is just a ugly situation to put them in. A lot of people will sit here after they first start and think the world of them but once we hit that first slump, the love affair is gone and I get to sit back and read everywhere how terrible they are and why they need to be fired. I much rather have someone who didn't play for the Brewers in the 80's that I could careless about the fans turning on....Like a Macha. Now if Ryne Sandberg doesn't replace Lou's job in Chi-Town... there is a canidate! Talk about the massive slap in the face to Cub nation..it would break there hearts and just for that reason, I'd pull the trigger!

Walla hit a bomb today, Hawn hit his 9th-- hopefully that breaks him out of his funk, Khris Davis added another two rbi's today and was 2-3-- he has came back red hot! Gamel with another double but is at 3rd base again. Garman has been a machine for Helena, and a raw rough day for Miller on the mound.

I try not to read comments on JSOnline because the ignorance is just sooooooo outragious but I did for this one and it actually lead me to sending an email to JSOnline telling them why they need to just disable the comment feature. The kid is 18 and they have just bashed the living hell out him and then they bash guys like Melvin for draft picks when he barely does anything with the draft. The comment feature on JSonline reminds me of Foxnews and how it just makes people more ignorant and unintellegent with every word.....Ahhhhhh okay much better I got that off my chest lol When it comes to Covey there is not one doubt in my mind that he WILL be signed prior to the deadline and I think it will probably happen around the 12th or 13th after a few more players ahead of him sign there overslot deals. His dad is smart, can't fault him for that. They hold all the chips so instead of why are they making a bigger deal about the 300,000 it would be the bigger question as to why it is for the Brewers? Imagine if you (prob are like most of us) a middle class person just won a lottery for $300,000, that is a lot and could impact your life greatly. No imagine winning the same if you were a multi millionaire.... you could prob whip you butt with 300k. If they talked to the dad prior to picking him or even on draft day they should have known it would take about 2 million because that is what he has sais the entire time. The problem with spending that extra 300k is that they have abudget they work with and by spending that money there they lose out on 300k that is needed to help sign some of the other top guys like a Wick, Gibson, Bates, Marks. Brewers have signed many players in the past over the slot, I think last year Brooks Hall got 700k to get out of his commitment to S. Carolina that is about 600k over slot for a 4th round pick right there and Kentrail Davis signed for 1.2 million after being drafted over 20 picks later than where Covey was picked. If they wanted Hall that bad wouldn't you'd think they'd want Covey bad enough to want to spend only 300k more than slot? I think so

I sure hope so. He was a waste of a roster spot in Minnesota, and a waste of a roster spot this year in Milwaukee. I'd say its pretty safe to say that the Gomez + Escobar + Wolf for Cameron and Hardy swap was pretty much a disaster. Hardy was having a lousy year (really has come on lately), but about the only good thing that you can say about having Escobar and Gomez on the field was that we were saving money. Cain is cheap as well, and as many have noted, a huge upgrade from Gomez. On top Gomez Comment--- Bottom is on the thread topic which it should be. I hate to do this and get off on a tangent but I have to address this and call this just flat out crazy. Who in there right mind releases a 24 year old player outright who still has options? Not to mention an insanily high ceiling? The only possible answer is someone who thinks MLB The Show's Franchise mode is reality because no GM in there right mind would do that. Where your Twins and the Brewers have fail miserably is that instead of sending Gomez to the minors to develop these unbelievable god given talents they have took away all his playing time or platooned him thinking that somehow he will manage to get better and develop. Beside for a rehab assignment has not been in the minors since he was 21 in 2007. He has never been ready for the majors but because of his abilities they have forced him to have to be and it hasn't worked out. Everyone hates on him and that is fine, he has struggled this season with the bat but people treat him with an insane double standard because he was brought in during a trade for JJ Hardy and not home grown. If Mat Gamel struggled I doubt people would treat him like this or if next season the Brewers decide to call-up Lawrie, he struggles and the Brewers decide to platoon him for the next two season instead of send him back down to work on his game and play regularly everyone would go insane (difference is that Gomez was given one full season as a full-time starter in 2008). So really, Gomez who is merely 5 months older than Cain is the most worthless piece of crap to wear a Brewers uniform that at 24 he needs to be cut! That is just a joke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now back to Cain who has been really exciting to watch, I can see where you are coming from with the comparison. If he was to have that kind of career and perform like Hamilton did throughout his career I would be thrilled. Of course I'd like to see Cain have a higher ceiling than 9 homers a season but the doubles, triples, average, stolen bases and etc I'd be extremely happy with. The best part about Cain is I do not see him even close right now to reaching his peak potential. He has only played the game for nine years! After I had just finished my first nine years of baseball I wasn't even in high school yet, it is crazy to see that his natural talent has taken him this far this quick. He has the dream make-up and if you look at him he still has plenty of room to grow and fill out. So the power still may be a few years away but he could be a potential 20 HR guy I think. To me because I believe that he is still growing as a player so much it is hard for really compare what I feel his potential may be.

How do you figure he righted the ship? In 2 of the last 3 outings he gave up 4 ER in 1 2/3 innings. And how do you get a dead arm after pitching a total of 18 innings this year to date thanks to his suspension? Wow the leader of the above the influence strikes again.... he pitched outstanding in wisconsin, was great in BC til he hit a couple bad outtings and now he is in Huntsville pitchin great again. Thing is that Jeffress could be outstandin but as soon as he gives up a run you will call for his head and want him gone. There is not a person on here who doesn't get how much you dislike Jeffress, there are 11 pages on this with you stressing it and then what you have wrote on other ones. Let it go already and be happy for how well he has pitched after the long lay off and his ability to get clean so far. keep it up Jeffress!!! See you in Milwaukee in September! I'll have to send jackalope02 a Jeffress number 1 fan jersey http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Paying Butler league minimum is better than paying Suppan or some other #4 or #5 pitcher free agent dollars. Butler may not be anything special but he is a cost controlled #4 or #5 type of a pitcher I actually think Butler has the potential to be a #3 like starter but he is probably more along the lines as a #4 or a #5 type of a pitcher which is very valuable to a team like the Brewers. Yeah he is a cheap option who has the ability to pitch in the 4 or 5 spot and give us another guy to sit in the 5.00 era's and maybe support a 11-11 type w/l depending if he gets Looper type run support. He is no worse than what he have but no better. I don't know never bought into the Butler is a legit pitching prospect talk. Hope I am wrong! Ha So if Rogers comes out and dominates as he has over the past few outtings with few walks, does he earn the bump to AAA? Which that move would open the door for Scarpetta maybe Merklinger to finally move up.

Cain and Gamel are locks it'd think, in my mind Farris should because I think he is going to be the next great super utility guy for the Crew like Billy Hall started out as and Counsell is now. He can play 2b and my guess is an okay 3b (he is known for his glove). He hits for contact and can run like the wind.... nice guy to have around. I think Cruz has earned it and Latin would be a guy that would be nice to see. For pitchers if Jeffress keeps this up we will be up with Rivas and Butler. It'd like to see Rogers take a nice vacation after the season and keep that arm fresh and healthy. Stetter and Villenueva with Kinzler, McClendon, Smith as long shots.
-
Poor Seth Lintz, he just can't catch a break this season. Once again he pitch really well except for that one deadly inning. Reminds me of the Dave Bush thing from a few years ago where every start he would be just cruising then he'd hit the 5,6,7 inning and the wheels just completely came undone. Then everyone would yell about Yost leaving him in to long. Like Narveson this season, if he could just cut out that one haunting inning during every outting he'd be fine. Man how bad does it sucks to have a no hitter going into the 9th and then have the first hit of the game be a walk off...

After last year when Scarpetta and Lawrie got the big promotion to Huntsville from Wisconsin to close out the regular season and playoffs, anyone see something like this happening again now that the Stars have a chance to make the playoffs again this year and are possibly the only team capable of making it this season? Not trying to say that the Brewers really put to much emphasis on minor league playoffs but it is always nice to have at least one team make it. Plus it would just be fun to see some players bumped the same way Lawrie and Scarpetta were last season. So any guesses of who you'd see being promoted if they went this route again? As for a A to AA promotion I think if they were to take two again it would be Kentrail Davis if 100% healthy along with Odorizzi as the "Scarpetta" pick from last year. If they were to take A+ to AA Scarpetta is a lock in my mind, he should already be there as it is, but outside of him I think Heckathorn would make sense along with Erik Komatsu. I guess it really depends on what they have mapped out for Heckathorn and Odorizzi as pretaining to innings pitched. No clue if they would make a move like this again this season but I really hope so. I really enjoyed following Scapetta's AA starts and Lawrie's everyday at bats (most at DH) last season
-
I think that should be the plan for Kentrail, at this point of the season no real reason to bring him back up to BC for about a month of baseball. He was tearing through A+ ball prior to his nagging injury that really effected him. I would actually like to see both K. Davis' in AA next season along with Komatsu the other guy manning the OF in Huntsville. It blows my mind that the Brewers never called Khris up to BC, beside for needing to cut down his k's, he definitely has earned it (actually he earned like 2 months ago and has done nothing to change my opinion about it.) Anyone else think Burgos is starting to become a legit prospect at all. It appears the light switch has really just flipped for him and since the bad start with the T-Rats to start the season and the really rough opening start for him in Helena, he has thrown the ball great over his last 8 outtings. since return to Wisconsin: 16IP 13H 2 ER 4BB 18K
-
Is anyone listening to the broadcast? Has Steve mentioned his velocity at all? If it back in the mid 90's I may just faint lol. I hope this Fredickson is here to stay, this is what he has suppose to have done since being on of our supplemental 1st round pick (Odorizzi, Lasker, Bucci and Wooten prior to injury have really made up for the disappointment of Fredickson, Adams, Lintz....and the injuried then strangly cut Romanski. Watten, Bowman, and Meadows have also been been nice pitchers to have around.)
-
What?! Fredrickson with 11K's though 5 IP, can't talk about the hits and only one walk?!? Wow, my heart just stopped when I saw that. Scarpetta continues to do all he can to rejoin his "PIC" Peralta in Huntsville Edit: Also is there still any need for Taylor Green in AA he now has over 600 AA at bats has a nice OPS, a good BB/K ratio, hit for good power, has been driving in runs, and outside of his .278 BA the rest of his numbers point that he is ready to move up. -Interesting with Green is that he is hitting breakdown .229 with 10 doubles, 1 HR , with 1 RBI and a 11/23 bb/k with no one on base (144 AB's) .320 with 16 doubles 8 HR's with 61 RBI's and 22/27 a bb/k with runners on (153 AB) .308 with 12 doubles, 5 HR with 53RBI and a 16/17 bb/k with runners in scoring position (107 AB). It appears he really clutchs up with people on base.
-
Without a doubt the Brewers could easily cut Braun, he is absolutely terrible! We are talking about Steve Braun right? ha This may be one of the more pointless treads, Braun along with Gallardo are the faces of this franchise for the next 5 or more years, yeah he it a rough patch but he is still hitting .285, that is like 2nd or 3rd on the team. It is nothing new for Braun to hit a rough spot like this, he has every season (no quit this bad but still has gone 2 or 3 weeks of god awful hitting) and like usual he will play his way through it and get on a tear that will shoot him back up over .300. Braun is probably the last guy on the team I'd worry about. Even if he finish up with a season line of .290 25HR 85 RBI's (that is a guess of what he is on pace for) I would not consider that to be anything to complain about.
-
Without a doubt I'd like to see him in baseball. He in my opinion is one of the best owners out there. Business wise and team wise he could do great things with Texas, he isn't scared to pull the trigger on big moves, he is a guy players love to play for, and he is just an exciting guy to be running a team with the energy he brings. Some people hate that he is not the Herb Kohl type of owner who just stays quit in the background and writes the checks or in the middle like Mark A but thats what I like about him. If I am a free agent I'd pick him as my owner over almost anyone else. He wants to win and he does it with passion. Nothing wrong with passion when you are spending 100's of millions of dollars a year on your sports franchise. He got rich good for him, can't hate, he used that money to buy a basketball team, turned them into a team that can contend every year, and now he wants to do the same with a baseball team....don't see the issue. Yes, he is outspoken and a def a typical fanatic (he is like most of us) but he does great at what he does.

Reasons for optimism for next three years...and more
YoungGeezy replied to Crash2303's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
It is a trade off because at the break teams are less likely to give up major league ready guys like a wade davis because they need them for the pennet race. Off-season teams are more willing to part with those type of players. -
Time to take some risks with rotation?
YoungGeezy replied to FVBrewerFan's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Rivas in the rotation, Rogers and Jeffress pitch out of pen here and there and no consideration should go to Peralta, Scarpetta, Heckathorn, and Odorizzi
