  1. I didn't hear that, but I thought it was worthy of a yellow as well. As a hockey fan, I really wish there were greater consequences for diving and acting in soccer. Over the last few months, I've really grown to love watching soccer; it really is an awesome game. The one thing I just can't stand though is the diving and acting. I almost wish officials could review matches and give players yellow cards after the game for making fools of themselves. Heck, I see why they do it, and if the incentives for acting that way were present in any other sport, the same behavior would take place most likely. It just really annoys me. On Lalas, I do enjoy his biased angry/nonsensical rants sometimes, but there are far too many times when he just needs to shut his mouth. He seems to be better fit to be a gridiron football announcer/talking head. However, I don't think he's taking many soccer fans away from the television set, and some of the same people who enjoy the NFL talking heads (whose names I do not know) certainly might enjoy listening to Lalas spout off. That Italy-New Zealand game was quite a stunner. A couple of exceptional saves by NZ's keeper in the second half. If Italy aren't able to take down Slovakia, things could get very interesting.
  2. It makes sense if you think about it like this. CC in the five hole is like batting the pitcher 8th and a hitter 9th, only in this instance Braun is the pitcher and you're clogging up the bases in front of your second #3 hitter Escobar who is actually the clean-up man because Braun (the pitcher) is hitting in the early 8 hole. I, for one, like our chances. Why not, I guess. But if Braun is the pitcher in this line-up, why is Wolf also in the line-up? Or is he playing left field? This is quite the zim-zam.
  3. Okay, I think this is how it stands: Slovenia with 4 points, 3 GF, 2 GA USA with 2 points, 3 GF, 3 GA England with 2 points, 1 GF, 1 GA Algeria with 1 point, 0 GF, 1 GA One game to go for each team: Slovenia vs. England USA vs. Algeria The first tie breaker, if points are tied, is goal differential. The second is goals scored. So, here are the possibilities for USA: 1) USA beats Algeria ==> USA advances 2) USA loses to Algeria ==> USA eliminated Here's where it gets sticky: 3) USA ties Algeria a) & Slovenia wins ==> USA advances b) & Slovenia draws with England ==> USA advances as long as they still have scored more goals than England, as both of their goal differentials would be zero in this case. For example, if England ties Slovenia 3 - 3 and USA ties Algeria 0 - 0, England advances. If England ties Slovenia 1 - 1 and USA ties Algeria 0 - 0, USA advances. If England and USA have the same number of goals scored after the draw, then it will go to basically a coin flip. Coin flip is pretty unlikely though at this point. c) & Slovenia loses ==> USA eliminated It would look better if the U.S. had four points, however...
  4. Macha told Manny Parra to kick my dog.
  5. Whoever had the genius idea of assigning a ref from Mali, a country without even a decent football league, should bear the blame for this reffing. That blown call on the goal was absolutely brutal.
  6. My thoughts exactly. I'd like to see an actual study of the effects of Duncan's coaching conducted, rather than simply say 'hey, this guy sucked somewhere and Duncan fixed him'. J.C. Bradbury did something like that for Leo Mazzone, and argued that pitchers actually did benefit from Mazzone. I never saw the actual study, so I can't really say whether I agree with his findings or not...
  7. Yes, but it eliminates games where both teams score less than four runs, so batting statistics will be better overall for games where the run differential is greater than four. That probably doesn't explain all of Cameron's "struggles" in high leverage situations, but along with the natural noise in high leverage splits (due to the low number of high leverage plate appearances), I just don't think all of this criticism is justified.
  8. Teams hit better in blowout type games. That's why they're blowout type games.
  9. Missed the Uruguay v. South Africa game due to work today, but from what I saw in the highlights. Forlan was very impressive. I once met a Uruguayan who described the country as "the Iowa of South America", so I can't help but cheer for them. Here's to hoping for a few more goals in the second set of games. I don't mind defensive hockey and soccer as much as some (the excitement of a goal in a 1-0 game is far greater than the excitement of a goal in a 4-3 game), but it would be fun to see the stars shine a bit more.
  10. I don't know how I missed that, as normally my ears ring whenever I hear the word bratwurst...I don't buy it. I think it's the kraut that makes it safer, as well as the spicy brown mustard and diced raw onions. The only way to make a bratwurst less healthy is to do the unmentionable, and put ketchup on a wurst.
  11. Watching McGehee, I feel like he moves reasonably well forward and backward but relatively poorly left and right. I agree that he is probably a better 3B than many metrics would indicate, and I do wonder how many more plays he would make with Pujols or Lee at 1st. Back on topic, I don't think Lawrie is blocked by Weeks, as long as the plan is not to have him split between Huntsville and Nashville this year. I know I've expressed my concerns about Lawrie in the past, but he has started to put together a very nice season for a 20 year old playing in AA (this is why I'm not a GM!). His K-rate still worries me a bit (24.2%), but it's not too bad. I just don't see the point of moving him, as he seems to be a good enough athlete to man 2nd, and he most likely is still improving. My worries about Gamel are also really not about his defense. Although a lot has been made of his struggles at 3rd, I didn't think he looked bad with the Brewers last year, so hopefully he can continue to develop.
  12. Braun's defense scares the heck out of me right now. Watching him, he truly looks like a -15 defender, and we can only expect that to get worse. I wonder if a move to first base would help...
  13. Okay, so their most recent starts were equivalent, but Narveson has pitched far better both this season and last season. I don't see how Suppan can possibly be the better pitcher at this point...
  14. If we're going to go ahead and judge pitcher only by their most recent start, Narveson went 7 innings with 2 earned in his last outing...
  15. I was thinking it would make more sense to put Gomez in center, put Edmonds at first, and put Prince at DH, in order to upgrade the defense. Then I remembered that the same could be said for Braun, Hart, Weeks, and McGehee, and only one can DH per night.
  16. [/blue]? Bradley just took Suppan deep, thankfully.
  17. On base percentage is not the only determinant of a lead-off hitters worth. Pierre projects to be worse than Rios, Konerko, Ramirez, Teahen, Pierzynski, Jones and Quentin. There's no reason to give your 8th worst hitter that many plate appearances. To Ozzie Guillen, Carlos Gomez and Alcides Escobar probably look like ideal leadoff hitters right now.
  18. When was the last time Suppan went 3 scoreless innings with 3+ strikeouts and only a single walk?
  19. Staying on theme: I wonder which of Brewers vs. Angels and Spain vs. Switzerland will be the bigger massacre.
  20. But the thing is putting someone like Pierre in the lead-off hole when you have much better candidates for those plate appearances is like seeing a five dollar bill on the ground and not picking it up. The Sox's optimal lineup might only produce 10-15 runs more than their typical lineups throughout the course of the season, but at the cost of writing players names in different spots, it seems to be a waste of resources not to put out the best line up. Edit: typo
  21. ^ That would be a pretty big blow to Italy, although there shouldn't be much question that they'll make it out of their group with Paraguay or Slovakia. I was disappointed that the Ivory Coast vs. Portugal game didn't open up; Ronaldo had a couple good looks, as did both Gervinho and Drogba. I'm ready for a blowout, but I have a bad feeling this will end 2-0 Brazil. They had better hope they don't disappoint Dear Leader, though...
  22. Woah. I walked into the other room thinking how cool it would be if I came back and saw a 5-2 score. Nice slam by Braun.
  23. Just because it doesn't make as much of a difference as some make it out to does not make it meaningless.
  24. Which massacre will be worse: Milwaukee vs. Los Angeles or Brazil vs. North Korea?
