  1. I'm not sure why so many feel the need to rag Parra for "mental weakness" or whatever else. He was a talented pitcher who struggled with injuries and just didn't pan out. There are probably a hundred guys in the minors or retired with a similar story.
  2. Sad news. I really enjoyed watching his teams, and was disappointed SLU didn't make a bit of a run last year.
  3. This is obviously a minor move but I think it's a nice one. Badenhop projects to be about a 3.50-3.75 ERA guy over about 60-70 innings next season and I've read that he's projected to make about $1.6 million next season. Having a few guys like Badenhop in the bullpen instead of the likes of Tim Dillard, Mike McClendon, and Manny Parra should provide a significant bullpen upgrade.
  4. Hanson was pretty much average last season, and his velocities all dipped by 1-2 MPH. Walden's a worthwhile back of the bullpen guy, but the Braves must know something's wrong with Hanson. Still could be worth the risk for the Angels though.
  5. I didn't realize he wasn't in the HOF until today when I read this. He was one of the most integral figures in MLB history. Is this just old-fashioned writers who hold a grudge against the guy for changing the face of MLB? Do young sportswriters just not understand who this guy was? I just can't imagine voting against this guy on a HOF ballot.
  6. I hate to say it but Duke has looked really good so far. They didn't look great against VCU, and if it weren't for a couple of blown calls and horrible FT shooting from VCU down the stretch, they may have lost that one. I guess I can take solace in the fact that NC State has not looked very good. I'm not sure why pollsters all of a sudden decided that they were worthy of a #6 preseason ranking after they barely made the tourney and then won a couple of games. Carolina is definitely a work in progress, but I expect them to be a much better team by the time ACC season rolls around. I could see this team doing anything from making a final four run to stumbling through a tough ACC schedule and having to go to a play-in game. Freshman Joel James and Brice Johnson have both looked quite good in the first few games, while Marcus Paige doesn't quite seem to be in sync with the rest of the offense. There will always be growing pains when you lose four first rounders, and they have the raw talent to become a pretty solid group. Tuesday could be interesting.
  7. Bill Hall always carried a container of flippy dippy in his back pocket.
  8. I think I have found the worst ballot of the year: John Lowe. 1) Cabrera, 2) Trout, 3) Johnson (I think Jim Johnson, not Kelly Johnson?), 4) Beltre, 5) Jeter, 6) Hamilton, 7) Rodney, 8) Cespedes, 9) Fielder, 10) Ibanez Jim Johnson: 68 IP, 2.49 ERA, 5.5 K/9, 2 BB/9, 51 SV Jeter: .316/.362/.429 with Derek Jeter defense Ibanez: .240/.308/.453 with Raul Ibanez defense Either this guy doesn't take it seriously or he doesn't really understand baseball.
  9. Cabrera had a great season. Mike Trout was even better. Not a surprise, and I understand why Cabrera won the award, but I would have given it to Trout without batting an eyelash. Trout will most likely fill his trophy case over the next fifteen years though. I'm really excited to see how great he can be.
  10. Braun was probably the second best player in the NL this season, and he just finished second. Maybe that's a sign writers are not going to hold last summer against him.
  11. He's owed $96MM for 5 more years and he's soon to be on the wrong end of thirty. I'm not sure I'd want that contract on my team.
  12. Tim Howard, Ron Hextall, and Evgeny Nabokov say hello! I find something beautiful about a pitcher's complete inability to hit a baseball. On one side of the ball they can be so dominant, making elite hitters flail. But, give them a bat and they look entirely ordinary. Having all players contribute on both sides of the playing field is one of the reasons baseball is so unique. (Oh, and for the record, I love watching kickers try to tackle a return man. That's probably the closest comparison in American sports to watching pitchers hit. Either that or watching Shaq try to hit a three pointer.)
  13. A few years back when Canucks fans tried to get journeyman defenceman Roy Fitzpatrick into the all-star game, somebody created some awesome Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, and Nicklas Lidstrom attack ads. They're worth 30 seconds of your time if you know hockey. And I'm firmly against the DH.
  14. Why is this guy available? I know he's 25 years old, but 14 K/9, 2.5 BB/9 in 60 innings in A+ and AA last season? It would be pretty silly to not give this guy a look.
  15. I'd pretty much stopped checking Juventus' streak because I figured they'd never lose. Atletico dropped their first Serie A game of the year today vs. Valencia. They still lead Real by 5 points in the standings though. I've been following Falcao and he's become a phenomenally good striker. He's finally getting a bit of press, but it sure took a while for people to notice him. He has Colombia in hot pursuit of a world cup appearance as well.
  16. He signed my cap a couple of weeks after he was drafted, and I always got a sense that he was a pretty good fellow. He put up decent numbers in AAA last season (~60 IP, 9.5 K/9, 3.9 BB/9). I'd be happy to have him back in the minors.
  17. The Cubs are probably still a couple years from contending, Marmol makes $5M less than Haren. Haren's a year removed from being an elite starter, Marmol two years removed from being a dominant reliever. I'm not sure why the Angels did this. Haren at $15.5 seems like a very good deal relative to Marmol at $9.8. Unless I'm missing something...
  18. Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Where Taco Bell is open 24 hours but hospitals close at 5:00. I think we all thought he was at least a bit of a jerk. But come on, really K-Rod? Here's to hoping he signs with the Cardinals. Or maybe not, then we'd have to hear how he "turned his life around".
  19. Well I'm happy because I don't get Fox Soccer so this should mean more games for me. ESPN has a tendency to cover mediocre games (didn't they play something like Swansea-QPR at 7:45 ET a few weeks ago? Not sure if it's something in their contract), so I'm excited to see NBC pick up some coverage.
  20. I agree wholeheartedly. I can't tell you whether this format is more profitable for MLB than the old-fashioned format (it probably is), but I would care far more if it were truly the best in the NL vs. the best in the AL. Even putting it back at four teams I'd be much more interested. I also think the season is just too long. I love baseball far more than the casual fan, but by the time the playoffs roll around I am ready for football, hockey, and soccer (and college hoops soon enough). Maybe go back to 154 games and get the playoffs over with by the second week of October by nixing some of the off-days.
  21. Ask, and ye shall receive: http://www.fangraphs.com/not/index.php/glenn-braggs-awareness/ If the Brewers needed a linebacker who could hit halfway decent, I'd sign him right now.
  22. Great Lakes' Oktoberfest is my favorite. I prefer it to Boulevard's, which is also widely available and fairly well regarded. I've never been wild about the German ones in the US, but I've only had a few and they might have been poorly stored and stale by the time I drank them.
  23. Did anybody actually get the PPV for the game? I couldn't find a stream so I had to follow the commentary on espnfc and it sounded pretty brutal. I don't understand why this team is having such difficulty in these early qualifiers. I wonder if there's any chance JK would have been on the hot seat had they lost that game (or even drawn). So long as one of the following happens, they'll be through to the next round: - Don't lose to Guatemala - Jamaica doesn't beat A&B - One other unlikely situation where Jamaica wins, USA loses, and goal differentials are 3 or 4. Most likely it will be Mexico, USA, Canada, Panama, Jamaica, and Costa Rica, and they're undoubtedly the second best team in that pool. Just gotta get it done.
  24. The Cardinals have now been to three NLCS in the last seven years. In none of those seasons did they win over 90 games. They've been the New York Giants of baseball over the past seven years.
  25. I think most people who don't like RBI's feel about the same way about runs, no?
