  1. If he puts up three or more elite seasons I see no reason why Halladay shouldn't at least be in the discussion as a Top 20 pitcher. This thread got me browsing the records page on baseball-reference, and I found this gem of a season from Old Ross Radbourn: 678.2 IP, 59-12, 1.38 ERA (207 ERA+), 19.8 bWAR Gotta love 1880's baseball!
  2. I think this is probably normal for April. I would pay to see a footrace between Aramis Ramirez and Casey McGehee. I'm not putting in Prince Fielder because he'd crush either of those two.
  3. Since when has that stopped anybody from writing for SI?
  4. That's a really neat story about your nephew and Chris Capuano. He always seemed like a class act when he was in Milwaukee, and you have to respect a guy that has come back from injuries like him. He's been a very good back end of the rotation guy throughout his career. I'll be cheering for a solid outing from Capuano and a 15-0 Brewers win after he exits.
  5. I know there was a study on the determinants of attendance for EPL football teams and they found that the quality of the stadium is actually as important or more important than the quality of the team. I'm not overly confident the same would be true for MLB, but it's interesting to think about nonetheless.
  6. I remember that game topper. Luckily Weeks hit a walk-off single to end it. I've never understood managers not wanting to use their backup catchers to pinch hit in a pinch (wow, that was bad). What are the odds of a catcher getting hurt in however many innings remain in the game? 1%, maybe? The odds on (1) a non-Randy Wolf PH'er not driving in the winning run and (2) given that non-Randy Wolf has not driven in the run, the backup C getting hurt in the next 1-2 innings of extra innings have to be something like 0.1%. If you can't tell, few managerial moves annoyed me more than that one!
  7. He had a couple of swings last night that reminded me of Geoff Jenkins. Perhaps that's a decent comparison of the type of offense Gamel could provide for the Brewers if things go well. Not a huge power guy, but a solid .280/.350/.500 guy who knocks 25 or so HR's per season and plays solid defense. Maybe it was just because it was a go-ahead homer, but I thought Gamel got a really nice ovation from the Milwaukee crowd yesterday, which was pretty neat.
  8. This thread's been pretty quiet lately. Runnin' Ron's growing on me. He does some puzzling stuff (Gomez in the 2-hole), but I don't feel like we've seen as many boneheaded plays on the bases this season as last. I really liked his move to PH with Kottaras last night, although I didn't care for the Lucroy bunt with a 2-0 count. He picks his spots with IBB's very well, and doesn't go IBB crazy like so many managers these days. The defensive positioning seems to work out more often than not. The bullpen seems to be managed fairly well. I'll be back to rant as soon as he does something silly, but for now I'll give RRR some credit.
  9. It's probably also worth remembering that the Miami MSA has about 5.5 million residents to Milwaukee's 1.5 million. (Side note: Milwaukee's MSA population is about 1.56 million. The next smallest MLB MSA is Kansas City, which is about 2.05 million)
  10. He clearly just wanted to give Kottaras a chance to walk them off. How dare you doubt George.
  11. SAFE. BREWERS WIN! BREWERS WIN! One complaint: my internet went mega slow with two strikes in Lucroy's AB. Wish I could have seen that one!
  12. Eric Farris is the guy they brought up for SS, but that ain't happening.
  13. I tend to think Melvin underestimates the difference between guys like Kotsay/Izturis and guys like Hairston Jr. or Hinske. There may well be some value to having a veteran presence on the team, but why can't we get veterans that can actually contribute on the field?
  14. http://www.sabernomics.com/sabernomics/minority2.png The percentage of non-hispanic white players has pretty much hovered around 60% over the last 20 years. We've seen a major increase in the number of hispanic players in MLB, and a major decrease in the number of African-American players in MLB. I do think that among pretty much all demographics, baseball is seeing a decline in popularity among youth. I don't have much to back that up, but I imagine that the percentage of kids in HS right now that would list baseball as their #1 sport is much lower than it was 20 years ago. I think that baseball tends to be the #2 sport behind football for a lot of kids these days.
  15. monty, with regards to the Braun infield fly ball situation I was under the impression that they threw out data for plays with extreme shifts, at least for UZR. I could be wrong though. I imagine that would be like a +1,000,000 UZR for a pop-up at the mound for a LF.
  16. I think it's neat, although the numbers are a bit annoying. An arm-band might be better, along with some type of pre-game ceremony. When I watched the Ken Burns' Baseball series last summer, I really enjoyed their coverage of the Negro leagues. I would love to know what guys like Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, and Rube Foster, among others, could have done in the majors. That is, besides Paige pitching 3 serviceable innings for the A's at age 59.
  17. Let's not forget the Brewers were still pretty much horrendously awful during their first season in Miller Park. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. If there's ever a season for the Marlins to become a big deal in Miami, it's this one. New ballpark, exciting team, new logo, etc.
  18. Kimbrel might be the nastiest guy in the league. I knew he was good, I just never realized he had this type of stuff. Close to 15 k/9 last season to go with just 3.75 BB/9. His metrics were pretty much off the charts last season. The worst thing about this game is that it will bring Kottaras' OPS below 2.0. It's probably worth firing Roenicke for that transgression.
  19. Ramirez looked to be dogging it a bit while chasing after the ball. A solid effort gives them a chance at the runner going to 3rd. He's quickly starting to annoy me. I wouldn't mind seeing Hart moved up to the 4-spot, regardless of whether Ramirez starts hitting.
  20. Here's something we'll probably be saying a lot of this season: "GO CUBS!". It's nice when a rival is so bad that you can cheer for them when they play your competitors. Nice 4-0 lead for the Cubs against the Cardinals. I hate losing to guys named Jair Jurrjens. That's the type of name that leads to your lunch money being stolen.
  21. I hadn't realized Wolf's option is only $10MM ($1.5MM buyout), so one has to imagine that if Wolf if nearly as productive this season as last season, the option will be picked up. I really think Greinke is going to have an exceptional year and price himself out of Milwaukee if this deal doesn't get done soon. I'm guessing his current price is at least 5 years/$100MM, and at anything higher it might just be time to go to all-out rebuilding mode after making another big run this season.
  22. RockCo, I never realized how bad it has been until I looked it up after you mentioned it. Since joining the NL in 1998, the Brewers have had three (3!) pitchers post >10 fWAR with the team: Sheets (31), Gallardo (12.9), and Davis (11.2). Given the six years of team control, that's really only two drafted players to be average/average+ for a significant period of time in recent years. I had almost forgotten just how horrendous this franchise had been before the Prince/Rickie/Hart/JJ class came up, probably because I only started seriously following the team in 2004 (the 42-35 start, 67-94 end team). (I was surprised to note that it seems to be quite rare for pitchers to put up 10+ WAR with one team over that time period, Astros had 7, Cubs 7, Cardinals 4, Pirates 3, and Reds just 2, and clicking around it looks like having 5-6 is pretty typical)
  23. Last year Gomez had a huge split but in his career it's only about 50 OPS points, all coming from elevated SLG% vs. LHP. His OBP is still sub-.300 against LHP's. It just makes no sense to hit him second in any lineup.
  24. I can't explain why Braun is getting the day off better than anybody here. That's odd. It's also odd that Carlos Gomez hits second in the standard LHP lineup but hits 8th in the AAAA lineup.
  25. The defense has obviously struggled out of the gate a bit, but I don't think there's any reason to expect this team to be worse defensively than last year's team. There are three new starters. Gonzalez will be markedly better than Yuni, Gamel should be better (perhaps by a fair margin) than Prince, and the pessimist in me views A-Ram as a moderate downgrade from McGehee. Replacing a few hundred innings of Kotsay with Aoki/Morgan/Gomez/NotKotsay will also be a moderate improvement. I haven't seen much out of Izszzsturis, but I don't think there's any reason to expect he'd be significantly worse than Counsell. Gamel will have growing pains, but he's a good athlete and built much more like a traditional 1B than Fielder. Gonzalez has built a reputation as a very good defensive SS over the past decade, so I'm not going to let a couple of early mistakes change my view of him.
