  1. When I say AAAA guy, I mean a guy who absolutely mashes in AAA but just can't seem to perform in his brief stints in the majors. Ishikawa was at or below league average in AAA last season. This guy is pretty much what I'm looking for: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=5462&position=1B
  2. I wonder if they consider giving Kottaras some starts at 1B? Zips projects him for a .250/.330/.430 type of line, which is not terrible for a stand-in at 1B, and almost certainly better than what Ishikawa will do. He has 4 career innings at 1B, less than I initially thought. Ramirez has never logged an inning at 1B in the majors. I'm not sure he'll want to play 1B, and even if he does, I'm not sure it's wise to have him make that type of transition during the season. There's got to be some AAAA guy that can be better than Ish and can be had for cheap on the waiver wire or for a B/C prospect.
  3. Suppan's line from 2011: 4.78 ERA, 4.88 FIP in 165 innings. Not too bad, outside of the fact that it was in AAA.
  4. Braun's second most impressive smash tonight went into the third deck of that goofy building at Petco. Yeah, dude can rake.
  5. Braun's walk rate has improved over the course of his career: {5.9, 6.3, 8.1, 8.2, 9.2}, not including this season. I don't see it improving much more, but a walk rate of 8-9% isn't too bad. That should put him on base at a ~.375 clip.
  6. 9:05 central games suck. They suck even more when you live in the Eastern time zone. I'm feeling a big night from Wolfottoras. By that, I mean 17 warning track flyouts from Wolf and 2 BB's from ottoras.
  7. No, we should be pointing fingers at the offense. Without the threat of a Prince Fielder dugout whoopin' they just can't keep their focus. Perhaps they could acquire Russell Branyan to stand on the top step of the dugout and look tough. Edit: FWIW, they're "leading" the league in BABIP at .343. Just for reference, the highest team BABIP over the course of a season from 2009-2011 was .311. No matter how bad this defense is (I for one don't think they'll be too bad), there's almost no way they post over a .320 over the entire season. As a Brewers fan I'm probably prone to feeling like every time an opponent hits a dribbler it finds a hole, so hopefully that's some of it too this early in the season. But yeah, any way you slice it they've struggled, and it's reason to be concerned. I still think this starting staff is above average in the ML, but it's beginning to get very frustrating. Hopefully trips to places like San Diego and Pittsburgh help.
  8. You know 3and2, if I hit 30+ HR's per year from now on and retire when I'm 38 I'll be a shoe-in . I'd peg Hardy's odds at ~1-2%. He'll go into the hall of "good, under-appreciated players, but not quite good enough for the prestigious Hall of Very Good".
  9. Ah, that would have been tempting, but it's probably about 1.5 hours from where we are in Carrboro (right next to Chapel Hill) to Winston-Salem. I take it your back in NC now? The big news here is obviously that Sierra Nevada and New Belgium are opening their East coast facilities in Asheville. That now gives the Asheville area NB, SN, French Broad, Highland, Pisgah, and about a dozen others that I don't see out here. Highland Little Hump is one of my favorite spring beers. It's a baby 4.5% APA which probably clocks in at ~25 IBU's, but's it's got a pretty good amount of floral hop character and I can drink them all night without getting blitzed. Finish is slightly vapid, but that's something that seems difficult to avoid in such a low abv session beer (not counting Lambics and Berliner Weiss as sessioners!).
  10. Well I guess you're going to have some of those finishes when you close 48 in a row. Great work by Ax to finish that one out.
  11. I imagine Parra is secure with this bullpen. It's hard to know what to make of his relief appearances before this season due to the time he missed, but his relief numbers have generally been pretty solid. He's had a couple of hiccups so far this season but overall he has looked very good. 11 IP, 4 ER, 3 BB, 14 SO, obviously not in hugely important situations all the time, but still a good start for a guy who has a load of talent but just hasn't strung together much success in the majors.
  12. Amazing that we praise Kemp on a night where he struggled so much. His OPS dropped tonight!
  13. I suppose with their hot start the Nationals think they have a decent chance of competing for an NL East title this year, but I just don't get this unless it's a 15-day type of call-up. Harper needs more time in the minors. In ~200 AA/AAA PA's, he's OPS'ing around .725. I'll be very surprised and impressed if he cracks a .275/.350/.400 line in the majors if he's not just up for some coffee.
  14. TLB, I too, am warming up to Roenicke. I generally think the bar is set pretty low for in-game managerial decisions, but I'm comfortable in saying that I don't think Roenicke's decisions this year have been that poor.
  15. After last night's game the Brewers are now 4th in the NL in wOBA, 3rd in slugging, and 1st in HR's. They're last in the NL in ERA (4.81) but 4th in xFIP (3.61). Hopefully the latter number is a better indicator of the ability of this staff.
  16. All commercial jingles pale in comparison to the Truvia monotone lady. She should be charged in Federal Court.
  17. Out of curiosity, where does the nickname Sea Bass come from, if anybody knows? He doesn't look much like Cam Neely.
  18. FWIW, I have a Motorola Photon and my MLB.TV premium subscription lets me listen to the games on the radio. However, the radio broadcasts are about 75% buffering even when I have ~8MBPS 4G coverage. I think this is an app-specific issue, because I don't have problems streaming TV and Sports with the Veetle app. If you get free gameday audio through MLB, you can try downloading at-bat lite (the free version of at-bat) and then entering your info. By entering my info, it could check that I am a subscriber to MLB.tv and give me the audio access. I'm assuming you have MLB audio log-in info from your laptop, so it couldn't hurt to just try entering that info to your at-bat lite app. In the past I think subscribing to audio gave you audio rights on your phone, but I'm not sure because this is my first real smartphone.
  19. It probably won't take long for the "they can't do it without Prince" "analysts" to condemn the Brewers' offense. I miss the heck out of Prince Fielder, he was a great hitter. But there is no reason this offense should be markedly worse than last season. Nyjer Morgan is OPS'ing .256, Aramis Ramirez .465. Those two will not continue to hit that way, and there's no reason to believe the offense won't improve.
  20. Here's the silver lining in Vancouver's abysmal start to the 2012 playoffs: http://blogs.theprovince.com/2012/04/21/move-over-schneider-kevin-bieksas-ryan-kesler-impersonation-is-amazing/ (Bieksa went to Bowling Green, Kesler to Ohio State, so that's where the Bowling Green reference comes from)
  21. I think somebody here (Rluz?) looked into the whole inexperienced pitcher Brewer FAIL thing a couple of years ago and didn't find the Brewers struggle against young'ns. But, it's more fun to complain about it like it's a Brewers curse. Pomeranz goes 8IP, 11K, 1BB, 2H, 1ER.
  22. Caught the last inning. Congratulations to Phil Humber for earning his place in history!
  23. You mean good at offense but and good at defense Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
  24. Fangraphs has him with 10 career. He did have 0 in his 2010 MVP campaign From 2010 to 2012 Votto's IFFB% is 0.3%, the next lowest is Kendrick, 1.9%. He's the anti-Yuni.
  25. Gallardo was more dominant in his last full calendar MiLB season (FIP ~2.25 between A+, AA, and AA) than Peralta (~3.00 FIP between AA and AAA). I'm skeptical that Peralta can step in right now and be an above-average MLB pitcher. He has all of 8 starts under his belt in AAA, so I just don't see the need to rush him, unless Estrada really struggles. Estrada was fairly solid last season and I see no reason why he can't be a decent #5 pitcher while the Brewers figure things out. His peripherals were quite good last season, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
