  1. There may have been only ~15,000 Cubs fans there for most of that game. It looked really empty to me and there was a pretty decent contingent of Brewers fans. I didn't expect Cubs fans to be too hard on Braun, outside of a few of the bleacher bums giving him a hard time for one rumor.
  2. I'm genuinely curious whether he could. I'm betting he knows Carlos Lee plays for the Astros, maybe Wandy. He might realize Volquez now plays for San Diego.
  3. I can already tell Ramirez is going to frustrate me. Props to Axford for finishing that one out. Call it a "character save" or some other fluff like that.
  4. I was worried about Marcum before the start of the season and this game hasn't helped. My patented AMAC, "Arbitrary Measure of Absolute Collapse", is at about 20% for Marcum. I don't entirely know why, but he really really worries me.
  5. Oh dear. The Brewers should seriously consider signing Craig Counsell to a 1-day contract and tell him to just go for it. Any reasonably well-struck fly ball will have a decent chance of getting out at those speeds.
  6. That move was totally odd. Probably won't make a difference in the game, but what was the purpose of that?
  7. Awesome, I had totally forgotten I wouldn't get this game on MLB.tv due to the blackout rules.
  8. Yeah I don't have many complaints about the lineup today. I would move Lucroy above Gonzalez, but for some reason Roenicke really likes Lucroy in the 8-hole. I'm much more willing to give the manager the benefit of the doubt on these things so early in the season, almost as if these games count for less in the standings. Strange. I'm feeling a big day for Greinke at the plate today. Gallardo got a lot of hype as the team's best hitting pitcher yesterday and I imagine "Science or Bravery" will go out there hacking today.
  9. Season over. I'll see you all in 2013. Aw, who am I kidding I'll come crawling back by tomorrow morning.
  10. Season over. I'll see you all in 2013. Aw, who am I kidding I'll come crawling back by tomorrow morning.
  11. The outfield is horrid though. The statue is bad enough, but the color of the walls is also horrendous.
  12. Well, here's what Roenicke is planning on going with for opening day vs. LHP Jaime Garcia Weeks Gomez Braun Ramirez Hart Gonzalez Gamel Lucroy I don't mind seeing Gamel down in the lineup if for some reason Roenicke thinks it will help him break in. I'd like to see Lucroy up in the lineup though. I'm not quite sure why he thinks Gomez is a good #2 hitter.
  13. The extension is for 10 years, $225 million, for a total of 12 years and $251.5 million. Votto has been phenomenal over the last few years, but I'm just not sure these types of deals are ever worth it for clubs like Cincinnati. If he isn't an elite player over the next ten years, that franchise might be in serious trouble.
  14. In 2011 Forbes had the Yanks at $1.7 billion, the Sox at $0.9 billion, and the Dodgers third at $0.8 billion. $2 billion for the Los Angeles Dodgers seems entirely absurd. I almost wonder if that's a reporting error. When ManU was taken over in 2005, it was only $1.5 billion, and their market is exponentially larger than that of the Dodgers.
  15. I love putting absurd data into a model like James' HR model and seeing what it tells me. I just entered a 19 year old stud who hit 10,000 home runs in each of his first two ML seasons. He only has a 97% chance of hitting his 20,001st homer. Shenanigans!
  16. I think Pujols has a decent chance at 762, Bill James' 26% seems a touch high to me, but not way off. If he can average 35 HR's per year for his first five and 25 HR's for his next five, he's pretty much there. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Should Pujols go out there and have two huge HR seasons by his standards (45 or so) in his first couple of seasons, this becomes far more reasonable. Like Hank Aaron, Pujols might not even need a 50 HR season to break the record. If that isn't a testament to Pujols' consistency, I don't know what is.
  17. Having driven through Dubuque on my way from Cedar Rapids to Madison at least two dozen times, I must say it is a lovely little town. The Hardee's on 151 has a bathroom that is consistently clean, and you don't even have to enter the second door into the restaurant to use it, so you never feel guilty not buying anything. Gas prices are fairly cheap, and at least one of the stations sells a lovely wine called "Boone's Farm" that you could enjoy on a romantic evening at the Greyhound track.
  18. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I like having elite teams in the final four. At the start of the tournament, OSU, Kentucky, Kansas, and UNC were probably the four scariest teams, and without Marshall, OSU, Kentucky, and Kansas are probably the three best teams in the country. I don't like to watch Louisville, because they bore the heck out of me, but that is one of the classic rivalries in college hoops and they're meeting on a huge stage. Kansas-OSU should be a great game, and either of those teams playing Kentucky in the final should be another great game. Does anybody remember how horrendous last year's final was?
  19. Sounds like Giovanaotoeleli is going to start the season in AAA, so Yuni has inched even closer to the job. Bringing Giovotella up in June would probably save them a year of control, so this probably makes sense because they're a couple of years away from competing.
  20. Well, so it goes. Nothing to be ashamed of for Carolina. Played hard down to the last second against a very strong two seed on the road. Hats off to Stilman White for really stepping it up. Outside of missing a couple of open looks, he played really well under a huge amount of pressure. I suppose after losing 3 of their top seven to what would be season-ending injuries, this should have been expected. Cheering for Kansas from here on out.
  21. Terrible win for Carolina. Kendall Marshall, who has maybe been the most important player on the team over the last half of the season, fractured his wrist about 10:00 into the second half. He finished the game, and it's his off-hand, but he's probably done for the tournament. There's an outside shot that he could be back for the final four, but I don't see UNC getting by Kansas without Marshall. If Purdue or NCSU can knock off Kansas, they may have a chance to make it into the final four with a relatively easy sweet 16 draw next week against U Ohio. Stilman White, a 5'11" Freshman, is the backup PG right now. He usually plays about 5 minutes per night, and he's a nice player, but nowhere near the caliber of PG this team needs right now. Creighton was blatantly dirty tonight. They were hacking Henson's wrist all night. Grant Gibbs winks at his coach after hacking Henson's bad wrist and drawing a T from Henson. It was pretty clear part of their plan was to get him out of the game. http://www.sbnation.com/2012-ncaa-tournament/2012/3/18/2882906/grant-gibbs-wink-gif
  22. I actually didn't see the lane violation all that well (I was watching on my phone), but the announcers seemed to think it was a pretty odd call. It's kind of one of those things that probably happens all the time but almost never gets called. The Missouri upset was so much bigger than the Duke upset. Lehigh is now ranked 78 by Ken Pomeroy, Norfolk State 186! Duke looked entirely vulnerable many times this season, especially in the last few weeks, when they got pummeled by UNC, lost to FSU, and narrowly escaped VaTech twice.
  23. I don't even care about losing Missouri. Lehigh got me 10 points. Got some wonderful screenshots of Kyscysscysysky when they were about to lose. Nervous about Creighton. I'm guessing Henson will be healthy enough to play in a pinch, but Williams will be very conservative. It'll be a fun, up-tempo game and if Carolina can put up an early lead it will pay off throughout the rest of the tournament. I don't want to play from behind against a team like Creighton.
  24. They've got to feel great about their chances now. Murray State has had a great year, but they are not on the level of Marquette, and neither is Florida. If something crazy happens to Mich State, they could be sitting pretty.
  25. Please let them sign Donnie Murphy. Then when he inevitably sucks, we can post things like: DONNIE, YOU'RE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT! edit: fail
