  1. Yeah, that Syracuse game was horrendous. I watched the last ~15 minutes after class and it was pretty painful to see UNC-A get totally hosed. They still probably would have lost if those calls had gone their way, but they might have had a ~35-45% chance to win if that lane violation hadn't been called. I've never liked Syracuse (don't they just seem like a skeezy program?), but this gives me one more reason to dislike them. My basic bracket strategy is this: Higher seeds are usually better, but there are some 9's, 10's, and 11's that have a >50% chance of winning, perhaps a few 12's every couple years. But, I like picking upsets, because that's way more fun. So, I try to find teams that I think have a good chance given their seeding. For example, I took NC State over SDSU this year, and Texas over Cincy. I also took Lehigh over Duke, mostly for fun, but I do think that Lehigh has a much better chance than most 15's (call it 5% rather than 2%). I hate losing sweet sixteen teams in the first round, so I very rarely put a >5 seed in the sweet 16, typically 1 per year (this year, I'm forced to pick Xavier/ND, and went with Xavier). Gotta cheer for Norfolk State despite having Mizzou in the final four!
  2. That's a 50-game suspension for Plush waiting to happen.
  3. I actually wouldn't be opposed to simply letting the winner of the regular season play in the NCAA tournament rather than the tournament winner. It would certainly get better teams from the weaker conferences into the tournament.
  4. That's phenomenal. The CTA chugging along behind his apartment is a great touch.
  5. What a great week for college hoops. I love these mid-major conference championship games. The atmosphere is typically outstanding, small gyms are rocking, and without sounding too cliche, these teams leave it all on the floor. St. Mary's - Gonzaga, Davidson - WCU, and South Dakota State - West Illinois all settled in overtime. I've seen a few articles about possibly eliminating the automatic bid for these teams winning their conference tourneys (Jay Bilas, I'm looking at you). I couldn't disagree more. The opportunity for teams like VCU, George Mason, Bucknell, Vermont, etc. to make a big splash in the tourney and knock off a big team is the most exciting part of the NCAA tournament. I really don't care if a team like USF, NC State, Northwestern is better than a team like Davidson. The opportunity for those teams to make it into the tourney and make a big splash gives us so much more interesting college basketball to watch, and it's really what makes championship week so enjoyable. I'm sure I'm not the only one hoping for a Carolina-UK title rematch, and a bit of redemption for the Heels. The way they came out against Duke was just incredible. Up 22-5 a few minutes in, 24 at the half, Kryschzckzyzzky facepalming within the first ten minutes of the game. Now with Mike Kelly out for Duke for the ACC tournament, you can't help but feel good about Carolina's chances to secure a #1 seed.
  6. Cyanogen - I'm sleepy so I could only gloss over your post, but the 3x level caught my eye in a big way as well. I do think it's important to note that apparently bodybuilders have tested at 70-1 vs. Braun's 20-1, so perhaps Braun's result wasn't that absurd. Still though, to think that none of the juice-heads of the past five years even came close to Braun's level is a bit odd. I think Landis tested at 11:1 when he lost his TDF title.
  7. The more I look at it, the more I'm impressed with that lineup (Baldkin's vs. RHP). As long as Gamel doesn't fall flat on his face, that is a very deep 1-7, and Gonzalez isn't terrible for a #8 hitter. Sure, 3-4 looks significantly worse, but I don't want to relive the black hole that was 5-9 in the lineup most of last season. Does anybody else remember the feeling of seeing Prince ground out with runners on 1 and 2 and none out and just feeling like the inning was over?
  8. BRING BACK CHRIS DICKERSON!
  9. I don't have a problem with those suspensions when it's not my team, but I wouldn't want Williams to sit Zeller, Henson, Barnes, and Marshall unless they were playing Nicholls State or someone of that ilk. We could be in for a very exciting last weekend of the regular season. In all likelihood, the UNC-Duke game on March 5 at Wrigley (sorry, Cameron) will decide the ACC regular season title. OSU-MSU on March 4 could very well determine the Big 10 title. For once, my spring break matches up with the conference tourneys, so I'll have a long list of games to watch.
  10. It will be much easier for Braun to be a consistent MVP contender with Pujols out of the league. That said, if he reverts to his typical .300/.375/.550 line you'll still hear people calling him out, saying he 'just can't do it now that he's clean'. I'm willing to be that if in April he struggles and goes something like .225/.300/.400 the excrement will indeed hit the fan in the media rooms.
  11. Skip Bayless' brother makes a delicious goat barbacoa torta. That's about the best thing I can say about Bayless.
  12. If I could choose the way things unfolded, I would choose option a: Dino exchanges his own sample with Mr. Braun's.
  13. Blasphemy! http://www.vintageminnesotahockey.com/files/Images/Ciccarelli.jpg
  14. Not to mention, this Dick Pound fellow seems to put his foot in his mouth on a routine basis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Pound
  15. Another write-up from a Political Science professor here at UNC about type I vs. type II errors in testing. Certainly worth a read. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/ryan-braun-and-type-i-vs-type-ii-error/
  16. I'm not terribly surprised that Prince sounded a bit disinterested. It really seems like most guys are now taking Braun's word. Mike Wilbon (one of my favorite guys on ESPN, that's not saying much though) just said he bought it on PTI. Kornheuser said the same. Every moment that goes by, this seems to get better for Braun.
  17. Let's hope not. I'm sure we can ascribe an epsilon's chance to a plethora of different conspiracy theories, but he's most likely a decent guy outside of being a Cubs fan.
  18. Dave Cameron had a quick write up on this over at fangraphs, and I pretty much agree with his conclusion. We don't really know if Braun is using, but in the same sense that we don't really know if Roy Halladay, Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, etc. are using. There are just so many issues with this test (and if I once more hear that the only issue was the fact that it was refrigerated for 44 hours instead of 8, I'm going to break something), that it's pretty tough to chastise Braun based on the test alone.
  19. For a single number to be 3x higher than any other number in the history just reeks to high heaven when you have 10,000 samples. I can't believe this isn't being brought up by more people.
  20. I know pretty much nothing about law, but from the looks of his cv, Shyam Das seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders. Dragging this guy through the mud, along with Braun, is a pretty poor response from MLB. Why is it that when an NFL player's drug ring blows up the news blows over but MLB can't avoid getting egg on its face here? http://www.nmb.gov/arbitrator-resumes/das-shyam_res.pdf
  21. Er, this is the basketball thread. I don't think I've ever seen Hawkeye-Carver-Carter-whatever it is actually excited. I think I may have heard they gave away some of the student tickets for free.
  22. It's sad, but those were my first thoughts as well.
  23. "Someone familiar with the decision by arbitrator Shyam Das said there were "several problems" with the chain of custody after the urine sample was collected. Instead of being dropped off at FedEx on the Saturday it was taken, the collector kept it at home until Monday, according to a source." - From TH's blog. I'm somebody who is generally skeptical of the ability of drug tests to catch users, especially when parties have this much money on the table. It still would not surprise me if Braun were guilty, but it also wouldn't surprise me if there were a hundred other guys out there who have been doing the exact same thing and will never be caught. I'll continue to give Braun, just as I would with pretty much any other player, the benefit of the doubt. He's a really special player, and he seems like a pretty decent guy as well (outside of those horrible t-shirts). Here's to hoping he goes berserk on the NL next season. Oh, and Olney is a complete clown.
  24. Since when has that stopped ESPN from reporting? This is the same network that thoroughly covered Lebron James' latest twitter kerfuffle. And no, this isn't supposed to be in blue.
  25. If anybody wants some ESPN lulz, check deadspin. Epic ESPN failure last night involving Jeremy Lin.
