  1. I think most of us are just having fun with Branyan. I doubt anybody here expects him to be dominant, but if he weren't a Yankee I'd probably sign him to a minor league deal and see how he swings the bat.
  2. Good start for Green at the dish. I really hope he gets off to a hot start which leads Roenicke to give him the full-time or near full-time nod. Maysonet could be really, really bad at the plate. His line from last season looks decent, but it's worth remembering that the PCL was incredibly hitter friendly last season.
  3. Well, Gonzalez's injury from yesterday looked pretty ugly, and I think we can all agree that we'd be happy to have him back within 4 weeks. However, I'm expecting the worst on Monday, that he'll be gone for most of the season. If this is indeed the case, who do you see as a trade target, assuming the Brewers haven't already fallen out of it? Clint Barmes is in the first year of a 2 year, $10.5 million deal. As a newly signed FA, he won't be available until June 1st, but trades rarely get done before that date anyways. He's a bit pricey, but perhaps if the Pirates continue to flounder he could be had for cheap. Jamey Carroll is also in the first year of a 2 year (+ option) deal, his worth $6.5 million. The Twins are already floundering, and Carroll, for the first time in his career, has been used primarily as a shortstop, with 26 games started at SS. There have to be some other guys out there. With the Dodgers' hot start they'll probably at least look like contenders for some time, so I doubt Hairston Jr. will be available. He also hasn't really been used as a SS since 2010. Who else is out there that might be a reasonable target?
  4. That's a good article, and in the two weeks since it was written, it certainly hasn't gotten any better. It's his swing rates that really alarm me: This season, he's swung at nearly 40% of pitches out of the zone. That's 13th in all of MLB. Maybe we really should expect a .300/.375/.550 type of hitter going forward. Combine that with age, and this deal could become a pretty bad one pretty quickly.
  5. Woah. You're walking on very thin ice here. Those are most certainly fightin' words 'round these parts. FACT: Russell Branyan is 27th all time in ISO. FACT: Russell Branyan is 2nd all time in SO% for all hitters with over 3000 PA's. FACT: Russell Branyan once hit a ball from AT&T Park to Kodiak Island, Alaska.
  6. Kevin Barker OPS'ed 1.060 in Mexican AAA last season. Might as well let him sign on the dotted line... (It's sad that I'm almost slightly serious.) I'm curious of how often an elite player has a month like Pujols has had from April-May 6th. I know they aren't as noticeable when they aren't early season slumps, but we're looking at a projected 900+ OPS guy struggling to crack 500 OPS in over a month. I imagine this happens once every season or every couple, but it's just unbelievable because it's Pujols.
  7. Is he healthy? I don't think he's signed with anybody this season and if that's the case he should be in Nashville tomorrow morning.
  8. Is Maysonet an elite defensive SS? If not, he's not the solution. In his past three seasons in AAA, he's hit about .265/.325/.350. Again, that's in AAA. The best thing for this team would be for Ramirez to move to 1B. If Gonzalez is only out for 4-6 weeks, perhaps they can make Izturis/Maysonet work. If it's any more, they absolutely need to find a replacement. Guys I immediately think of are the same guys we thought about last season: Jamey Carroll and Clint Barmes, maybe JHJ. But, as they were all signed as FA's this offseason, I don't think any of them can be traded until June 1st. Melvin's failure to get a solid backup IF could be a killer for this team. Jamey Carroll signed a 2-year, $6.5 million deal with the Twins. Hairston signed with LA for 2 years and $6 million. It's really hard not to proclaim that this season is over right now, especially if Gonzalez misses more than a few weeks. Talk about a horrible first month of the season.
  9. I think the 2010-2011 Weeks was exactly the type of player we hoped Weeks would develop into. .270/.360/.460, 25 HR's and solid defense. Weeks' AAA hitting stats gave many hopes of him being much much better than that, certainly as good as Braun or Fielder if not even better. Granted it was only 200 at-bats in 2005 as a 22 year old but he was hitting .320 with a .435 OBP when he got called up with 12 HR's and 10 steals. At the time he projected to be a .400 OBP guy who was going to hit 35 HR's a season Yeah, I know a lot of people were hoping for that, but that type of projection is always going to be the 99th percentile projection for pretty much anybody in the minors. If Weeks was a 35 HR, .400 OBP guy as a 2B with average defense, he would probably be one of the 5-10 best players in the league.
  10. I think the 2010-2011 Weeks was exactly the type of player we hoped Weeks would develop into. .270/.360/.460, 25 HR's and solid defense.
  11. I'd bet that this team without Narveson, Gamel, and Gonzalez projects to be no better than 81-81.
  12. Based only on the information I have from Ueck and this board, I'd be thrilled to have him back in 2-3 weeks. Here's to hoping he's back within the month.
  13. Looks like it's Ueck for me today. I really hate MLB blackout rules.
  14. http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRvdWCoAQUHefObv-dFwgTwKPVsSDl5b8N-EOAUTwuLMU8Lujws Seriously this sucks. I hope this just isn't one of those naggy hamstring injuries that ends up being 6-8 weeks. Luckily they have OF depth. Perhaps start Aoki in CF against LHP, Morgan and some Aoki against RHP, and have them each fill in for Hart/Braun if need be. This probably also cuts down the possibility of Hart going to 1B, at least for now. Edit: I fail at adding images.
  15. Pujols is dead last in WAR so far this season at -0.9. He's hitting .194/.237/.269 right now. Last season, for the first time in his career, Pujols looked entirely human. His walk rates over the past four seasons (2009-2012) are {16.4, 14.7, 9.4, 5.3}. His O-Swing % over the past four years: {22.9, 27.5, 31.8, 39.8}. His Z-Swing % over the past four years: {66.6, 63.0, 62.9, 59.0}. Is it reasonable for Angels fans to start to get somewhat concerned that rather than the .300/.400/.600 type guy they thought they were getting is going to produce at more like the .290/.370/.530 level? I honestly have no clue what to make of this, and I usually don't make much of just one month, but when you look at the last month+last season he just hasn't been that same dominant guy.
  16. They typically play 96 games at home rather than the typical 81, so it's understandable why you feel that way. Edit: But yeah, it kind of does feel that way now that I think about it. Weird.
  17. Braddock's stats in his first season as a reliever, between A+ and AA: 40.1 IP, 8 ER, 62 K, 7 BB, ~1.80 ERA. Just a shame it didn't work out. Best wishes for a player who always had such promise...
  18. Mike Adams probably also merits a mention, although he wasn't very successful when in Milwaukee. He put up a 1.42 ERA from 2009-2011 in 177 innings. Funny how he always seems to go under the radar. Joe Thatcher also had a couple of very good LOOGY years out in San Diego. I'm not sure if there are any more guys that they developed and shipped off only to find success with their new organizations, but Adams certainly fits into the category of elite relief pitchers. Just for reference, when you consider all relievers with over 100 innings pitched from 2009-2011, Adams' ERA is best (1.42 vs. Rivera's 1.82), his FIP (2.24) is second to Sergio Romo. Are there any more of these guys? They obviously haven't done a great job of developing relievers, but there are at least a couple guys who were developed in Milwaukee who would become elite pitchers (counting Axford). Edit: Of course, it's worth mentioning that Adams spent a lot of time in different organizations before finding his success. I'm not sure if he was completely re-tooled like Axford.
  19. If Houston would eat almost all of C. Lee's salaries, I'd maybe consider it. I'd probably still rather have D. Lee if he'd bite on an affordable deal. For reference, the Zips line projected for C. Lee .272/.324/.437 is very similar to what D. Lee has done between 2010 and 2011.
  20. There's an auto dealer up the road in Durham that has the worst commercials I've ever seen. They ran this Jersey Shore commercial about a year ago. Now they're running another. I will never buy a car from these clowns specifically because of these commercials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENEjqKszGZY
  21. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Welke.jpg Hairston was called out. Umpiring is really tough, and I'm not going to denigrate the work of MLB umps because I think they do a very good job overall. I tend to think most of the bad calls average out over a 162 game season, but that hardly makes it less frustrating. Just expand replay already. It probably would have taken 15 seconds to overturn that call.
  22. Wow. Two season ending injuries to full time starters within the first month of the season. If Lee hasn't retired (I don't think he has), they should seriously consider signing him. He has put up slightly better than league average batting lines over the past two seasons and he plays plus defense. He also seems to be a generally good baseball guy who might like the chance to join a contender at the end of his career.
  23. How much experience does Hart have at 1B? He only has 8 innings in the majors, but if I'm correct I think he may have played there some in spring training. I also thought he mentioned that he didn't want to move to 1B. But if he were willing and able to make the move, running a 3-man platoon type thing in CF/RF with Gomez, Aoki, and Morgan wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, and is preferable to Ishikawa playing every day.
