  1. I wonder what proportion of fans will ever notice. I vaguely remember seeing them on TV, but had they disappeared and I not seen this thread, I wouldn't have noticed.
  2. Quite the change from the stars and scrubs rosters of a few years back. I'll take the under on Segura but otherwise when you think about it just about every position should put up league average or better production (maybe not 1B if they don't get the other side of the platoon figured out). I also like the WAR projections for the SP lineup: {2, 2, 2, 2, 2}. When you think about it, this team is basically loaded with average players and has two (or three if Braun gets it together) players who are top 3-5 at their position. Doesn't make for an exciting offseason but this looks like a solid team.
  3. I get a sense that Kentucky and Duke might be scary good this season. After Kentucky, the rest of the SEC is really bad this year. If UNC (unlikely) or Louisville (good shot) can't knock off Kentucky in the next couple of weeks, it's going to take an ice-cold night of shooting for them to be beaten. It will probably happen over the course of 30 more games, but hopefully it happens sooner than later so we can be spared from listening to the talking heads nonsensically rambling about how UK are better than the 76ers...Duke's ACC doubles this year are Wake, Syracuse, UNC (21), Notre Dame (25) and they also have to go to Louisville and UVA so they'll drop a few games. I'd bet on Wisconsin still grabbing a #1 seed. The Big Ten is deep but pretty soft at the top after Wisconsin, so they might get through the Big Ten season with 1-2 losses, whereas UVA will likely drop a few games in conference play.
  4. Is the academic admissions criteria really that different at Wisconsin for athletes than it is at other places? The Atlanta Journal Constitution had a good investigative piece a few years back where they made public records requests at major public universities and got SAT data for college football teams at just about all public flagships, and what they found isn't surprising but is interesting. Wisconsin had an average SAT of 961, which was about 250 points below the rest of the student body. Generally speaking, selective institutions showed greater gaps between football players SAT and student body SAT (GaTech: 1028, 316 gap; UNC: 951, 317 gap , Berkley: 967, 331 gap, UCLA: 935, 340 gap, Texas: 948, 282 gap ) than less selective institutions. (Looks like most of the data from the article is summarized here https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2008/12/29/admit)
  5. If you wear red in Chapel Hill, make sure it heavily boast UW logos, lest you be thought a State fan. I had the (dis)pleasure of attending the ugliest basketball game I've ever seen against Iowa, who won despite shooting ~30%, because ~30% > 28%.
  6. I consider both Randy Johnson and Pedro to be top-10 all time pitchers. Heck, you make an all-time "greatest of the greatest" team and they may both crack the starting rotation, assuming selection based on performance in their primes. The only guys on there which I can make an argument for not including are Sheffield and Raines, and I prefer a "small hall". I'm voting for: Johnson Martinez Smoltz Biggio Piazza Clemens Bonds Bagwell
  7. http://www.bankrollmob.com/useravatar/137947.GIF
  8. Hopefully the figure isn't too high. I usually chuckle at $50K fines to guys who will make $5MM in their careers, but that's a chunk of change for a guy like Fiers...
  9. Corcino 2014 in AAA: 4.13 ERA, 7 K/9, 4.5 BB/9, 1 HR/9, and that's his best AAA season. Yup, he's going 7 IP, 104 pitches, 3BB, 5K, 3 hits, and giving up two runs.
  10. And far better command. It's easy to forget how good Sheets was when he actually made it to the mound.
  11. Whew, I was getting nervous we wouldn't get the joy of a 2-out jack tonight.
  12. Is it just me, or are Cubs fans the worst in baseball when it comes to judging HR balls? They go nuts for just about any fly out that goes within forty feet of the warning track.
  13. At this rate, the fact that the Bucs and Cardinals can't both lose is pretty tough for the Brewers. Scooter Gennett's career OPS vs. RHP is near .900; can't complain about him getting as many PA's as possible against righties. Braun's about a fifteenth of a step from beating that one out. I've got to imagine he's a bit frustrated at this point as he struggles through injuries and a (for Braun) really disappointing season.
  14. 18-8. Also, Yadier Molina will be busted for PED's, a corked bat, and having too much pine tar on his black, black soul.
  15. That's a lot of cash for Broxton. Looking at his peripherals, he doesn't seem like the type of guy I want the Brewers throwing $9MM to, and his .221 BABIP and 87% strand rate this year are pretty ridiculous. But, he's an upgrade they sorely need at this point. In the midst of a playoff race, marginal improvements are majorly valuable, and I'm obviously not footing the bill. Hopefully the salary means the 2 PTBNL are overage low minors type of guys.
  16. Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley = 2 points...Relegation would be so funny. Not gonna happen, but let's enjoy the dream while we can...
  17. On 05/17/2014, Kershaw gave up 7 ER's in 1.2 IP against Arizona. Including that start, he has a 1.73 ERA in 161 IP. Outside of that start, he has a 1.35 ERA in 159 IP. Obviously any pitcher looks better when his worst start is removed, but Kershaw goes from "absurdly good" to "1968 Bob Gibson" with that start removed! So long as you're not a member of the "pitcher can't be MVP" philosophy, I can't see why anybody wouldn't vote for Kershaw.
  18. I'll be proud of myself if I can stay up for the whole first inning of this one.
  19. "...we had nine injuries. We also had to play within 48 hours so I could not play with the same squad as on Sunday." Oh, well that makes this loss totally reasonable.
  20. This thread made me realize I don't notice jersey numbers anymore. I honestly don't know if I could tell you more than ten jersey numbers on the current Brewers, and I probably watch an equivalent of 80 games per season.
  21. Well I guess I made myself known as a noob Everton fan as I decided to take a nap around the 80th minute (kid got me up at 6AM) figuring it was in the bag. Two points in the first two games would seem to be a pretty disappointing start. I'd love to hear what was being said between Louis van Gaal and Giggs against Sunderland today. LVG didn't look amused.
  22. How is that "convenient"? As far as future projections, the most recent seasons are the most relevant. Edit: Although from what you're saying it sounds like we're basically saying the same thing. I'm concerned about Braun's power because I'm concerned about his tendency to struggle with these nagging injuries. When healthy, perhaps it is reasonable to still think he'll hit like he did a few years ago, but he's got to get that thumb healthy. I don't know much about these surgeries, but 6-9 months after the season is over in (hopefully late) October would likely have him back before the All-Star break. If that's the price to get him healthy, it seems like a pretty reasonable route to take.
