  1. It sure seems that way, but I'm willing to at least watch the guy play for a semi-extended period of time before I will say he's terrible. I don't completely understand this sentiment. If you were managing a business, and you had a "candidate" that had been called completely inept by other employers, etc., wouldn't you raise an immediate red flag? Maybe that's a bad comparison, but quite frankly, I don't know what I can capture in watching Yuniesky that a professional scout and defensive metrics can't capture. I mean, you can get a pretty good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a cow's butt, but wouldn't you rather just take your butcher's word for it? I don't want Yuni to suck. I'd love him to find motivation and succeed. I just don't think that's the most likely scenario. The Brewers are in the position (85-90 wins) where the marginal value of a win is maximized. As someone (end_____), they can pay $2 million for an (expected) win that's likely worth around $8 million.
  2. Yeah, Betancourt has a good fielding percentage. He also can't move. Heck, a 104-year old one-legged man would probably have a .975 fielding percentage.
  3. I apologize for any wise-cracks or jokes I have made against the Cubs. An internet message board is in no way an appropriate place for light-hearted jokes, especially those poking fun at a rival baseball club. Our comments are completely inappropriate, and I know the good folks over at NSBB would never be so insolent as to behave like we have here at Brewerfan.net.
  4. They would have a better shortstop there... http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100919204419/simpsons/images/7/7c/HatB_-_Ozzie_Smith%27s_misfortune.png Maybe the Brewers should start scouting mystery spots and black holes for their next SS?
  5. I'm pretty pumped about Moon Man. There are few better sessionable pale ales on the market. I'm also pumped about Two Women, although I don't typically care for Pilsners. It should be excellent when fresh. Hopefully the Black "IPA" (why don't they just call it an Indian Black Ale??) is good. The only one I've had of the style is Stone's, which is great fun, but it's $6.99 for a bomber, and no longer distributed in Wisconsin. Totally Naked and Cabin Fever I don't much care for, and I don't see the point of 2 dunkler bocks, much less 3 bocks. New Glarus has already had great success with its Hefes and its Dunkleweiss brews, so I'm sure Laughing Fox will be properly executed, although I'd rather just have Crack'd Wheat. I'm pretty excited that Imperial Weizen is coming back, and I'm excited to try the Smoked Rye Bock. I'm a bit disappointed that Apple Ale is making another appearance, but I recall Cranbic being quite good. Hopefully the other thumbprints are a bit more interesting. I'd love to see them play around with their Gueuze a bit, which they said they might try, or try something funky like a Gose (beer from Leipzig somewhat similar to a Gueuze brewed with coriander, wheat, and salt. I've never had one but I was lucky enough to find a bottle at John's Grocery earlier today. Saving it for New Year's Eve).
  6. Is it bad that the first thing I thought of was "I wonder what's in his fridge"?
  7. I agree with you on the Belgians, with the exception of the Lambics. Maybe it's just that I'm cheap, but given the option of a world class Impy Stout or DIPA (FBS, Expedition, Hop Rod Rye) that can be had for under $3 per bottle, I just find myself a bit disappointed with Belgians more often than not. I enjoy them, but I often don't want more than 6-8 ounces. My ex-roommate from Minnesota is coming back from a semester abroad and I'm hoping he'll bring me back some good Surly offerings, including Abrasive, when he gets back in February, if it's still around. I must say, I got a nice Christmas haul, and I can't wait to try it out. My brother picked out some of the last Stone available at Steve's. Got bottles of Stone Ruination, Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous, DFH Theobroma, Bells Java Stout, Bells Porter, NG Enigma, NG Apple, NG Abt. I shared a bottle of Lost Abbey Carnevale (post-2008, spiked with Brett) with my father and brother, and that's a great beer. I found the Brett characteristics a lot less dominating than in NG's R&D Golden Ale, although they still were at the forefront. Very nice indeed.
  8. I'll admit it. This isn't what I thought of when I read the title "Ryan Braun Shirt".
  9. I thought he'd been throwing longer than that (like 6-8 months). I'm still skeptical that he'll be able to bring his velocity back up, given that he's essentially out of baseball for 2 years now.
  10. Well, they'll either have to sacrifice prospects or take on a big salary. In Furcal's case, they'd have to take on the pro-rated portion of $12M, so I don't think the Dodgers would expect much in return. Marco Scutaro and JJ Hardy are another couple of options that might not cost much in terms of prospects.
  11. Whew. When I read 'type A', I was ready to be pretty annoyed. If Saito can stay healthy, this should be a very good bullpen. That back end of Saito-Axford will be pretty filthy, and to have guys like Loe, Braddock, and Hawkins to fill in the rest of the important innings, I think it's pretty likely that the bullpen is a strength of this team.
  12. Did he have a lot of trouble with injuries last year? His stuff is filthy, and it doesn't look like he fell off at all last season. I like the idea of Saito/Axford for the 8th and 9th.
  13. I'm happy we didn't throw $3MM at him. From everything I've heard, his fastball is sitting around 84MPH, down from around 88 in his heyday.
  14. Darn optimists...I have them doing much worse.Agreed, that is overly optimistic. If they're contracted before next season, which I believe they will be (Bud Selig is my best friend, father, and mother), it will be hard for them to play 162 games. They have some good things going, but I just can't see them finishing ahead of more than 1 of {Milwaukee, Cincinnati, St. Louis}. They haven't done much this offseason, and guys like Soriano, Fukudome, Ramirez, Byrd, and Zambrano just keep getting older. Their rotation looks solid (Dempster-Wells-Gorzellany-Zambrano-Silva), but it's not spectacular by any means.
  15. It's very enjoyable in moderation, but I don't think I could drink more than a single bottle of it. The sweetness can be quite cloying, and so can the spice flavors (clove, nutmeg), but it was pretty good with a slice of pumpkin pie last night. The strength is surprising though, as the sweetness hides the 10% alcohol.
  16. I think his contract will prevent the Crew getting anything in return for Wolf. He's on tap for $9.5 million next season and a $1.5 million buyout, assuming his $10 million option won't be exercised. Lilly probably projected to be between .50 and .75 runs per nine better than Wolf, although I believe he was making $12 million next year. At best, I see Wolf being worth his salary, so perhaps it would be possible to dump him for salary relief. I just don't see much coming back to the Brewers, even in the best case scenario.
  17. A dozen dozen. And no, I have no idea why a dozen is 12, and why that is standard. I'll just resort to blaming the English.
  18. ^That's the episode with the ranch dressing hose, no? Man, I do feel a bit like comic book guy when it comes to The Simpsons. Back on the meat wrapped in bacon idea, I'm planning on making chorizo stuffed dates wrapped in bacon this year. My wife and I had them at a gastro-pub in Colorado this year, and they were disturbingly good. I'm figuring I'll grab some good Medjool Dates at Whole Foods and replace the pit with some raw Mexican chorizo, wrap in a half slice of D & G's bacon and roast for 20 minutes at 400'F. If all goes well, I should probably call my cardiologist. Thinking about it, I would be so much more happy with a good plate of cured meat and cheese than a relish tray. Cured meat, good cheese, and good olives would be a nice surprise.
  19. I'll take number 2, and I think that's what's going to happen. Hart in center would probably be a complete disaster. I imagine that an outfield of Braun-Hart-Gamel would be nicknamed "The Three Stooges" by the end of April. If we peg Braun -10, Hart (CF) -15, and Gamel -10, that's -35. Gomez/Dickerson in center and Hart in right probably saves us around 30 runs (-10, +10, -5 = -5). That's a big chunk. While Gomez is unlikable, and flat out painful to watch take hacks, his defense truly is a thing of beauty. I wouldn't be surprised if a Gomerson soft platoon provided near average production next year.
  20. Reported on MLBTR. Ryan Braun, former relief pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, and topic of the infamous thread "Ryan Braun to 60-Day DL", has signed with the Angels. http://www.mlbtraderumors...010/12/minor-deals-.html
  21. This will help in resigning him. No way he'll even consider Texas or Houston, and Atlanta is probably off the list as well! *BLUE* I've been getting called out on my laziness with the blue here.
  22. ^Agreed. If Gomez hits even as poorly as he did last year but is exceptional in the field, and Dickerson is a capable back-up for 50-60 games, the club could very well get nearly average production from center.
  23. 89 wins. There are very few teams that I'd project higher than 90 wins. I'll peg Cincinnati at 85 wins and St. Louis at 87 wins.
  24. I had no idea Yuniesky was that highly regarded in his first two seasons. Is Yunie the case of a guy who was athletic and just got lazy or scouts overestimating his ability?
  25. Why the blue font? It's too bad Ned didn't ask them for some grittiness and some gamers. Inglett/Durrington/MacGruder for Greinke+!
