  1. FWIW, Bautista's FB% spiked to 55% last year. I know we always hear about guys changing things in the spring, but this may be a case of a guy actually making significant changes. I have no clue what to expect from Bautista. I doubt he'll ever hit 54 HR's again, but he could be a pretty good player over the course of his contract.
  2. I had no clue Mex City and Monterrey actually applied. I can't imagine a MLB team in Mexico in the near future, although I imagine some Spanish speaking players would be willing to take a discount to play there.
  3. It's easy to forget Cabrera is only 27 years old. His counting numbers are pretty ridiculous, and if he can keep himself out of more trouble, he could very easily end up in the HoF.
  4. I've gotta say, I think I'm tiring on IIPA's a bit. I drank a bomber (my better half doesn't like beer, save for DFH Festina Peche) of it last night, and it was good, but 100+IBU's without a ton of malt sweetness is just a bit much for me. The flavors and aroma were great, but at a certain point I feel like the bitterness just destroys my palate. Drinking a Kalamazoo stout right now, and I'm really enjoying it. I've gotta say, I'll nominate Boulevard for best value beers. I picked up their 12-pack sampler to split with my father during the Super Bowl, and for $11.99, I got 2 bottles each of Bully! Porter (very good), Irish Ale (excellent), Single Wide IPA (excellent), Pale Ale (standard), Wheat Ale (good for an American wheat), and Amber (stinker). That's an even better deal than a 12-pack of Capital WI Amber for $10.99 at Woodmans.

  6. I really hope Pujols laughed at the Cardinals if the rumored $19MM - $23MM per year is accurate. Here's to hoping the Cubs and Cardinals get in a bidding war with the Cubs signing him to a 10-year $320 million deal!
  7. AP reporting first four years worth $38.5. $6.5, $10, $11, $11? Sounds awesome.
  8. Put me down for Weeks. If he's as good as he was last year, he'll almost surely be the most valuable position player. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me to see Braun or Prince go crazy this year. On a side note, when I first saw Yuniesky Betancourt, I thought it was Yovani Gallardo. I can't wait for somebody to vote for Wil Nieves.
  9. Just out of curiosity, when Weeks says he won't negotiate once ST starts, he means once he reports, correct? Does anybody know when he plans on reporting?
  10. While I don't have much to base it off of, I feel like flame throwing high strikeout/high walk relievers are prone to falling apart. It seems like a fine contract, and his strikeout numbers are frankly ludicrous, but I have a feeling that when Marmol loses it, he's really going to lose it.
  11. http://sports.espn.go.com...hl/news/story?id=6118511 Mario Lemieux chimes in. Quite frankly, I agree. This crap is an absolute disgrace to the game. If I were in charge of handing out punishments for the Islanders-Pens game, I would (1) Award no points to either team, (2) Fine each team $250,000, (3) Suspend Gillies and Martin for 50 games each. The Islanders have 48 fighting majors on the year, the Pens a league leading 62.
  12. Blue Jays Fans, Take A Good Look At Your Classy New Infielder The guy could change, but I probably won't find myself cheering for him anytime soon. Quite frankly, he seems like a bit of an arrogant jerk. (fixed link --1992)
  13. One place I'm curious about is Raleigh-Durham. It's not a huge metro (~1,700,000), but the Winston-Salem/Greensboro metro (~1,500,000) is only about an hour from Durham, and having Charlotte just over two hours away wouldn't hurt. The nearest team to Raleigh is the Nationals, and that's over a 5-hour drive. That's a pretty big pocket without a ball club.
  14. Nuts to this. Move the Cubs to Gary, Indiana.
  15. Haven't the PECOTA projections been terrible over the last few years?
  16. ^ I thought teams did disclose revenues but their figures were somewhat difficult to interpret due to the accounting, as you mentioned.
  17. I'm just curious if anybody has actually seen the numbers on this team. Owners often play the poor card even when their clubs are profitable.
  18. Kotsay has put up about 1,000 PA's over the past three years is way more relevant than 100 PA's over 13 years. I'm pretty comfortable making a rough statement about the quality of a batter based on that information (along with age, possible nagging injuries, etc). Based on those 1,000 PA's, Kotsay looks to be a .250/.325/.375/.700 guy now. Inglett has put up those 871 PA's over 4 years. Both of those are more valuable than Kotsay's career PH'ing numbers.
  19. Joe Inglett career: 871 PA, .286/.345/.397/.742. Kotsay has a career line of .279/.335/.411/.746. He has fallen off a cliff big time in the last five years. In the past four years, Kotsay is 6/37 with an OPS under .450. Did he all of a sudden forget how to pinch hit? Probably not. There are huge amounts of variation in samples this small, and quite frankly it's usually better to ignore this type of information than to use it to reach a flawed conclusion. I don't doubt for one second that it's quite a bit different to come off the bench and take an at-bat than to take an at-bat after playing the field for the past five innings and getting a couple AB's. I'm sure there are guys who struggle with pinch-hitting. However, I'm also willing to bet that overall past performance is a much stronger determinant of pinch-hitting performance than past pinch-hitting performance.
  20. I'd actually be willing to be Kotsay's breakfast decision gives us more valuable information than these 99 PA's. Oatmeal, grits, baconator,...
  21. ^Not to mention, the Brewers are not the Yankees. An additional win for a team projected to put up 86-88 wins is incredibly valuable, and makes a postseason appearance much more likely. Having a guy like Kotsay on the roster probably won't even cost the Brewers a single win. I just think it's a bit silly to sign a guy like Kotsay when a guy like Inglett, who is younger, better, and more versatile, is available at a similar price. Having Kotsay as the 4h/5th OF will be far less detrimental to the team than having Yuni at starting SS. Every run counts though, so I just don't see the point of signing Kotsay rather than a better reserve OF. Slightly off-topic, but is Reineke a big "Veteran presence/grittiness" guy. I'm starting to get a bit concerned with Nieves and Kotsay.
  22. I'm pretty skeptical of the notion that Ben Sheets has a good enough understanding of the labor market for MLB players to be able to back up that statement. Players ought to be (and most likely are) paid for what they are expected to do, and often the strongest determinants of expected performance are past performance, age, body type, etc, with past performance probably being the strongest.
  23. Since 2006, Kotsay has put up a WAR of -1.3. I don't get this at all.
  24. I'm a bit surprised as well that he couldn't fine a 1 year 1.5 million deal. He'd obviously have little value to the Brewers on a major league deal, but you've got to think somebody could have used him as a 5th/6th starter, no?
  25. I really want to be optimistic, but I just have an odd feeling that the Brewers will disappoint us this year. I'll go with 86 wins.
