  2. Without looking, Oliver Perez in 2004? He was awesome, but my gut tells me he went something like 14-12. Edit: Yup, 12-10 in 30 starts with a 2.98 ERA.
  3. If the text mentioned how he stole that phone, it would be Failblog material. Hopefully they can get it back for you, and man would that kid feel like (a bigger) idiot.
  4. Yeah, if that Strasburg guy would have learned to tough his way through that sore shoulder he sat out with in 5th grade. Just like these football players what with their new fangled concussions. Heck 50 years ago way fewer concussions were diagnosed! But wow, 105 is absurd. It would really be a shame if one of his fastballs found Yadier Molina's hip.
  5. According to Cot's, in 2007, their payroll was $24 million. In 2008, their payroll was $43 million. This year, their opening day payroll was nearly $73 million. If their profits were that small when the payrolls were so low, it's not a stretch for Sternberg to say that they're not going to come close to making a profit with a payroll that's $30 million higher than it was two years ago. If anything, I would think the leaked documents prove his point about this season, but I'm not an expert on financial documents. You could very well be right, but it wouldn't surprise me if their revenue has riven by $30 million or so to cover the additional player costs. Of course, attendance is only going to be up about 100,000 from 2008, but perhaps with their increased TV ratings, jersey sales, etc. Who knows though, owners have been known to understate their profit levels for as long as they've been around. If I were a betting man though, I'd be willing to wager that the Rays didn't raise their payroll because they wanted to lose millions (of course, they could have missed the boat on the amount of increased revenue they'd see).
  6. From the leaked documents, and linked to one of many articles: "The documents show that the Rays earned $11 million in profit in 2007 and $4 million in 2008" http://floridaindependent...-fight-for-a-new-stadium
  7. Lucroy, Cain, and Jeffress, no question about it. Throw Axford and Braddock into the mix, and I might have to think a bit more!
  8. I understand what you are saying, but for some reason this just struck me as really funny.....I really like that guy. I'd like to see him win a small scratch off lottery ticket prize..like $10 or $15.I was trying to be reasonable. Of course I'd love to see the guy win a Cy, but I think he actually has the potential (although it may be unlikely) to have a decent journeyman career.
  9. C'mon man. Is this really necessary? Tulo has to be an MVP candidate if he can keep this up. What he's done in the past two weeks is downright ridiculous.
  10. That's pretty neat to see, and he actually writes pretty well (outside of a few typos). Man, if there's one guy I'd love to see go to an American League team and just have a mediocre career as a bottom of the rotation or back of the bullpen guy, it's Seth McClung. I hadn't realized he wasn't playing this season. So, will the Cardinals be signing Trevor Hoffman next year? Apparently he's the classiest guy in professional sports!
  11. I'm still a bit sheepish about Rogers being in the rotation next year. If all goes well, I'd still send him to AAA for 8-10 starts next season. I'd rather not jump the gun on him, especially as next season will be a rebuilding year.
  12. I wonder how common it is for a guy who has played 4+ full seasons and never hit over 20 HR's to hit 45+ HR's in a season. One guy who did something mildly similar to this was Beltre in 2004, and then of course Luis Gonzalez in 2001 had that absurd season. I'm pretty confident that this tops both of those though.
  13. Had a pint of Founder's Dirty Bastard (Scotch ale) just now. Very nice - lots of dried fruit (fig, date), a bit of smoke, and a touch of chocolate on the finish. I found the sweetness to be a bit cloying, however, it was nicely offset by a bourbon tinged well-hopped finish. While at Woodman's on the west side, I couldn't find Dancing Man. Oh, and a comment on their turnover - I was looking over DH's Raison d'Extra and saw that it was bottled in 2007. At 18.5%, it was probably fine, but it makes me wonder how long some of their beers have been sitting on the shelf. I did however grab a sixer with a couple more offerings from Bear Republic; their Racer IPA and their Red Rocket Ale. I had their Hop Rod Rye IIPA a while back and it was great, so hopefully these don't disappoint.
  14. I've been to: Miller Park Metrodome Wrigley Rogers Centre Ballpark in Arlington Coors Field If I had to rank them, I'd say, purely speaking of the stadium, it goes: 1) Arlington 2) Miller Park 3) Coors Field 3) Wrigley (in all seriousness, the drunken frat-boy Cubs fans we find there really take away from the experience and the "classic" feel) 4) Rogers Centre The Metrodome comes in sixth. That place was horrendous for watching baseball. Edit: I watched Claudio "ball-goes" Vargest give up a boatload of runs at Coors in 2007. I like to forget that game.
  15. I hadn't realized that Rogers' GB/FB ratio was so good this year in AA. His walks still do really concern me, and I'm thinking the best plan at this point is to give him some innings in the bigs at the end of the season and start him in AAA next year.
  16. I disagree. No fan base cares if their team gets the most per dollar spent. Well, I'd wager that the owners are concerned about it.
  17. Add me to the crowd who is calling Braun and Hart bad defenders. There are very few people on this site who take UZR without a grain of salt. I largely agree with the methodology, and although it is not even close to perfect, it is getting better. My opinions on Braun and Hart are not simply copied from Fangraphs; I've watched them play the outfield all year, and quite frankly, I've yet to find many people who follow the game closely who consider them anything but bad defenders, especially Braun.
  18. No. There are a lot of numbers I'd retire before retiring Hoffman's. He has played two season with Milwaukee, one solid and one brutal. You don't retire a guys number for that. Oh, and Hank Aaron is different, as he played more than half his career in Milwaukee, just under a different logo.
  19. In tragic soccer news, France was able to beat Bosnia-Herzegovinia of Former Yugoslavia and the Middle Western Balkan Peninsular State of Hrsdgegver. Perhaps we could turn this into a soccer thread? I've really enjoyed watching back-to-back-to-back EPL matches on ESPN and my computer while watching my puppy on Saturdays. I can't say I'm a Chelsea fan, but they have been a blast to watch so far.
  20. To answer the question, not too much. Fielder is going to be getting somewhere around $15MM in arbitration next year, and he doesn't provide much more value than that. Of course, guys like Fielder that have superstar status do provide some value off the field, but it's probably not that much. I'd hope for a 50-75 SP prospect along with a couple of high ceiling throw-ins.
  21. Grabbed a few brews while in Madison this weekend. New Glarus Abt - Good beer, but disappointing as an Unplugged. Nice 1-2 punch of rum & raisin, but this one should probably be set down for a while. Bells Third Coast Old Ale - Big barley wine. Lots of dried fruit (raisin, date). Somewhat sweet, but enough bitterness to balance. Very good, but probably would be even better after being set down for two to three years. New Glarus Staghorn Oktoberfest - Good beer for the style, but I'm not a big fan of this style. I've lived in the Cedar Rapids area for over a year now and I still haven't made a trip to John's Grocery in Iowa City. According to their website, they have an outstanding selection of Belgians. http://www.johnsgrocery.c...owse.cfm?method=prodname I've actually never tried a proper Gueuze, so I'm thinking I may splurge and pick one up. They have quite a few, so I'll have to grab one for a special occasion.
  22. Dave Bush pitches, free meatball sub at Subway.
  23. Could anyone give a quick run-down of what Kintzler throws? Hopefully he gets a few innings. If Macha can find it in his heart to give Gamel, Kintzler, and Jeffress some playing time over the last month, I'll be much more interested in the end of the season.
  24. I just saw this thing unfold on Sportscenter, so I'll give my two cents. First, railroading the catcher the night before was the best way to score the run. He would have for sure been out without railroading, so what the heck is wrong with it? That's baseball. Like others, I have no clue what is wrong with stealing two bases when your team is DOWN by 11 runs. That's ridiculous. He got beamed and was trying to help his team get back into the game. If there was ever a time to go crazy and charge the mound, this was it. Sure, he would have just been better off walking down the line staring at Volstad, but it has to be pretty hard to restrain yourself here. As an interesting aside, Morgan actually played seven games for the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League when he was 19 years old, scoring two goals and drawing 20 penalty minutes. This team also included future NHL Calder Trophy winner Barret Jackman and NHL'er Filip Novak. http://hockeydb.com/ihdb/...s/pdisplay.php?pid=67848
  25. Dibble is out as the Nats' (off) color guy. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5521129 Can't say he doesn't deserve it.
