  1. Exactly. I hate when people say that pro athletes are overpaid. If you were one of the less than .1% of the population that could do a job for a company that makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year directly because of what you do, you would want to be paid accordingly.
  2. Completely agree. They are all overpaid, from the very top of the list all the way down to the very bottom. It's gotten completely out of hand. I'm a bit ahead of you thou. Just wish I would have woken up sooner. I started not caring about MLB the year Prince left and Pujols signed that ridiculous contract. Haven't watched a Brewer game since, that I didn't get free tickets to attend. (I only come to this MB for entertainment. Since It's one of the few that I can see at work over my lunch hour.) NBA lost me long before that. I watch Packer games but not with anything close to the enthusiasm that I did 15 or 20 years ago. Stopped playing fantasy football a long time ago, so I don't feel I "have to watch" any of the other games. Usually DVR the Packer game, then watch most of it on FF. They win, good for them. They lose, so what. Either way, doesn't change my life. By the way, if you still need a baseball fix, try the Lakeshore Chinooks. Tickets are less than $10. I just can't understand this thinking at all. These guys "make too much money" so you won't watch them play? I assume you don't watch any TV shows or movies, nor listen to music or read books either.
  3. I guess Stearns is looking for versatile coaches too. I would assume Lane is going to be working with both pitchers and hitters since he did both in his big league career.
  4. That's peanuts for the Cubs. If he sucks, they just take the hit and release him without thinking twice.
  5. I'm pretty sure that North America is the only place where "z's" are frequently used in English. Most every news article I read from the UK, Australia, or New Zealand uses "s's".
  6. Pro sports are billion dollar industries. All that money has to go somewhere. It could go to owners or players. Either way, some group of people is getting ridiculously rich. Until the public stops giving those billions of dollars, nothing is going to change.
  7. Does this even make them a wild card contender? Even despite the fact that these contracts always end up bad, this still seems like a stupid move for them. No one has ever said Dave Stewart has a clue.
  8. Wow. Two guys and zero bids. Can't believe some team didn't throw a $1 or 2 million bid at either just because.
  9. He was just DFA'd, not placed on waivers, so it's at least a week before he can claimed if he's not traded before then. Even then he would have to go through the whole AL and a few NL teams before the Brewers get a shot at him. I doubt that happens.
  10. For a team with their kind of money this is a relatively low risk deal. If/when Lackey implodes they just take their loss and move on. I would have guessed that they could have gotten a better pitcher though.
  11. There's some couple that had quadruplet girls a few months ago and I guess they've become internet famous because of that. Every night my wife watches the new video they post and it's incredibly annoying. The videos are basically the mom filming the four babies crying while she talks in her very annoying voice about how hard it is to have four babies and occasionally random, boring, mundane day-to-day things that every human being does. Why do these people feel that their lives are so unique and interesting that they have to plaster it all over the internet and why do people find it so interesting that they watch it and encourage more of it? And why does this mom think that when her children are crying that filming it is the best thing to do? Old guy rant over.
  12. Mike Pelfrey just got $16MM over 2 years. Garza is becoming more of a bargain by the day.
  13. JA Happ just signed for $13MM a year and has a career 96 ERA+. Garza is being paid basically the same (but less actually) and has a career 102 ERA+. Certainly last year was a disaster for him but his numbers were just so much worse than his career norms, and he's not really that old at 32, it's not crazy to think he's done being an above average pitcher. I'd be curious to know how many GM's would take 3 years of Happ at $13MM a piece over 2 years of Garza at $12.5MM a piece. Happ is also a year older than Garza.
  14. Dave Stewart has shown himself to not have a clue as to what he's doing so I could see them giving up something worthwhile for Peralta.
  15. I don't know if he'll be back next year or not but hasn't he passed unclaimed through waivers a couple times in his career? He doesn't seem like a very in-demand player.
  16. He has pretty good offense past the homeruns. However his defense is so bad I can't imagine the Pirates tendering him a contract and I don't see a chance of an NL team going after him. Not even Doug Melvin would play him in the field. What part: the barely .300 OBP or low .230's batting average?
  17. If baseball had a salary cap, maybe there wouldn't be all these longer contracts given out? Doubt it. If you can't offer a free agent more money annually than everyone else, you give him more years of as much money as you can. Basically what happened in the NHL after they added their salary cap with players signing contracts of ridiculous length.
  18. He can't play defense at any position and offensively will only provide you with homeruns - sounds like a classic Melvin guy.
  19. I guess. I'd take Davis's not a disaster defense and actual on-base skills over Trombo's beer league softball skills any day.
  20. This is exactly it. If Price doesn't work out for the Red Sox, oh well, they can move on and still compete. But it could provide them with one of the best pitchers in baseball for the next 4-5 years as well. That is a HUGE advantage to have over a team like the Brewers. While yes, the Brewers don't get caught up in over spending, they also never get a chance to land a player that can transform a franchise. Huge disadvantage. Huge. If baseball had a salary cap and the Brewers had the cap space to sign Price to this same contract, would this be a beneficial deal for the Brewers? Almost certainly not. The only way it could be would be if the Brewers could cut Price at some point with no cost to them like you can do in the NFL.
  21. I'm pretty sure it's the injuries and massive amount of years and money left on his contract that is keeping teams from going after him. As much as the media tries to tell us otherwise, people within the game don't care about PED use past or present. Same thing with Braun's "character" issues. I've never once heard a bad thing about him as a teammate and that trumps anything he's ever done off the field.
  22. Reacting not to PBIB specifically but to the sentiments/slants expressed, which some folks do believe to be truth based on comments that continue to surface.... The first sentence above is correct. The rest isn't. - The Brewers did offer him the chance to pitch out of the pen, which he declined. - They encouraged him to stay with the team. They didn't send him home, let alone tell him to stay there. - It was Garza who chose to leave the team. He wasn't going to pitch again and his wife was late in her pregnancy with twins. I'd guess the Brewers would've preferred that Garza make different choices than he did, starting with accepting the chance to pitch out of the pen just like Lohse did. But at least in terms of how the whole episode was reported (publicly, anyway), Garza didn't go against any team mandates and chose options that the team made available to him or otherwise allowed. I'm not too keen on Garza, but it skews the picture to portray it inaccurately. I'd also guess that the Brewers know they're on the hook for two more years with a guy who, (uncontrolled/unclassy/immature?) petulance notwithstanding, has a good arm and a very solid track record, so it does them no good to do anything other than hope for the best out of him going forward -- the exact slant Counsell & the front office have voiced publicly. Same as Braun, people have already made up their minds about what they believe happened and nothing will change that.
  23. Carlos Gomez supported an OPS of .654 in his first 1600+ plate appearances and then turned into one of the best CF's in the game. (.592/.657/.623/.655/.679) and the last number is at age 25. Jonathan Villar has posted an OPS of .653 through his first three big league seasons (658 PA's) and in his last season he OPS'd .752 at the age of 24 (only 128 PA's). Villar is a great guy to be had for the Brewers. Could definitely be a diamond in the rough that Gomez was for them. It's so easy to toss out these number and disregard these players but this guy has a chance to be a very good IF for a team and I'm glad it's the Brewers. But to block his AB's would probably be one of the dumbest things the Brewers could do. Not saying he needs to be penciled in as the Brewers 3B but he should be starting at least 5 of every 6 games. Can we stop comparing every young player who has bad major league numbers to Carlos Gomez? This is the same argument many people were making about Hernan Perez. Segura had a .729 OPS after his first two major league seasons. It's been .615 since. That argument works both ways.
  24. He'd be blocking Villar, the guy they just traded for, not to mention Perez, both of whom are 24 and if you put them in the KBO, they'd likely put up huge numbers. Villar is going to be playing all over the place and I have no problem with someone blocking his career .650 OPS from getting AB's.
