  1. Not to stray any further off topic here, but: I have for years been fascinated by what possibilities might be for a team to commit to playing a season with the "tandem starter" approach the TLR tried in 93 with Oakland. The main premise being to eliminate hitters seeing a pitcher for the 3rd time through the order, have 2 guys paired up to throw say 4 innings each in a game. One of the big hurdles is keeping the starters satisfied, knowing they can't earn a win. It would take strong leadership, young guys, and complete buy-in to commit to something outside the box. Of course it won't happen, but the 2016 Brewers, with their young guys vying and hoping for rotation spots, as well as low expectations, would be as good a team as any to give it a try from day 1. It sure would be interesting. I posted this same idea in a thread over the summer as what the Brewers should do with their young pitchers for the next season or two and it was shot down. It just makes sense since hitter do better the more they see a pitcher. Unless you've got an ace ala Kershaw, Greinke, Price they should go 2 times through the order and call it a day.
  2. I was actually surprised at the good behavior of those around us, especially considering how the game went. That kid was by far the most obnoxious person. Most Brewer games I've been to had worse fans than those around us on Sunday.
  3. The answer is Javier Betancourt. There is a PTBNL too.
  4. Sounds like a classic "minor league deal with spring training invite, makes the team out of camp, and gets way too much playing time" kind of deal that Doug loved to make.
  5. I'll take that any day over my experience at Sunday's game. There was a guy 2 rows in front of me vaping or smoking an e-cig or whatever it's called. Partway through the game some ushers came down and seemed like they were looking for someone. They left and came back a couple minutes later and asked to see my buddy's ticket (I was in a group of 4). Evidently they thought he was the one smoking and were about to write up our group and give a warning to the season ticket holder (another buddy's mom) about misconduct with the tickets. So of course we all started arguing and pointing out the true culprit (as did the group sitting in front of us). The true culprit did wind up getting written up, and no one in my group did, but after the fact the culprit started whining to the guy sitting in front of me about how he ratted him out, blah blah blah. To which the guy in front of me basically said, "of course I'm going to rat you out when someone else or I might get in trouble for something that you're doing." At which point the other guy with the culprit (may have been his dad) turned around and threatened to hit the "ratter-outer" so hard that his nose would be inside his face... I'm not sure what's more upsetting, the fact that the true culprit and his dad were actually threatening someone else over something for which they had no one to blame but themselves, or the fact that they didn't get thrown out when that threat was reported to the ushers... Ya, I think you got me with that one.
  6. Buehlre was toast at the end of the year. So, he's the perfect fit for St. Louis. He'll have 18 wins and 3 ERA next year.
  7. They did but who is there to bump out of our rotation? Peralta won't, Nelson is a no, and hard time seeing Jungmann get the boot. I highly doubt they don't give Garza a spot back. Matt Garza is a nice bounce back candidate himself. So if we are talking bounce back players he should be in the rotation for that reason. There is that last spot...you could send Davies back down because he is so young, but he was decent in his 6 starts last year. I wouldn't be opposed to sending Davies down to test out Chacin, but then again it would be nice for Davies to get some starts. We should let Jungmann and Davies get a big workload to see if either is going to stick long term. Because Jorge Lopez is knocking on the door waiting for a chance too, though I think he could use more time. The luxury the Cubs had was the fact they didn't have many starting pitcher type prospects in their system at the time. The Brewers rotation is so young from top to bottom it is hard to bump someone out for a project or to trade any of them. One of those guys will get hurt. How often do your 5 starters get through Spring Training 100% healthy?
  8. Went to the Packer game today and there was a 7 or 8 year old boy sitting behind us who spent the whole 4th quarter screaming things. When the players were near our side of the field he yelled out their names to try and get their attention. When the offense had the ball he kept yelling for them to "run the I" and "throw it deep". Any time there was a flag he would just start randomly yelling penalties. Worst of all he would scream at the top of his lungs in that high pitched shriek that kids that age have. While I appreciate the enthusiasm I really wanted to turn around and tell his dad to get him to shut the heck up as most everyone sitting around us wanted to do.
  9. Everything I've read has said it was because of playing in the FSL. His numbers were still some of the best in that league.
  10. Imagine what a cheaper Krod could bring in return.
  11. I don't think it would be a huge obstacle. He can either stay in Milwaukee and lose for the next 3 years or so or go to a competitive team while he's still a productive player.
  12. Simmons is a slightly better hitter than Segura (career OPS .662 vs .666, OPS+ 81 vs 85).
  13. Ummmm, have you ever played OF competitively before? That position is a lot harder than a lot of people give it credit for. Ya. Played it in college. Our outfield coach was a highly regarded OF'er in college himself and he had the same opinion as I do. Outfield is pretty simple, get the ball and throw it to the cutoff man.
  14. I have no idea why the Brewers would want Revere. He offers nothing for the organization in its current state. And then to give them Smith too. That just seems like a poor use of resources.
  15. I don't think so. While Phillips and Newcomb are probably similar in prospect rankings, pitchers seem to have a bit more value. But we added Santana in our deal, a Top 100 guy (granted, a guy around 80-90 on the lists). Plus two interesting pitching prospects. Braves only got one interesting pitching prospect. I guess a lot depends on Aybar. Is he the 4 WAR player of 2014 or the 1 WAR player of 2015? I think he is on the decline, so I don't see a lot of value, but they certainly can flip him for something. Just depends on what. Newcomb is the big chit. Young, top 20-30 pitching doesn't get traded that often. That's sort of what I was thinking. The Braves got one big time prospect and then a bunch of meh's for 5 years of a player in his prime signed to a reasonable deal. The Brewers got one big time prospect and a bunch of interesting guys for 1.5 years of a leaving his prime Carlos Gomez and a decent ML pitcher.
  16. It all tastes terrible. I can't stand beer.
  17. I can't buy into a stat that says Escobar has negative defensive value. I didn't read more into it but the description you've posted says nothing about how shifts are figured in but it does say it focuses on the number of plays made. Brewer shifts probably inflate the number of plays Segura makes because he's positioned in the right spot.
  18. I've always thought Simmons was a little overrated because of his glove - his defense might be great but he's not much of a hitter - but I would have expected a better deal for him based on all the hype he gets. I really don't see this working out well for either team.
  19. A .796 career OPS versus the handed pitcher that you face 75%+ of the time is tradeable.
  20. Being reported a few places, only these two guys are known so far. Really doesn't seem to make sense for the Braves. The Angels don't really have anyone in their system of note.
  21. Not disagreeing but Piazza was dealt twice mid season. Paul LoDuca, Ivan Rodriguez, Charles Johnson all dealt midseason but they weren't quite Lucroy level at the time. I think the best time to trade Lucroy is this offseason anyway. Yes, he's coming off a down year but he's had a few injuries and with the concussion now I think it's best to cash him in now and not risk further injury. All it takes in a foul tip off the mask in spring training and he could be done for the year or longer. Could he play his way into a better return during the season? Absolutely, but I think it's more likely something happens to him that lowers his value.
  22. Do you mean this in reference to defense and/or overall value because his back to back .614 and .616 OPS seasons are well below average for SS.
  23. I'm pretty sure Timmy's days as a starter are over. I would have no problem bringing him in for the bullpen. Maybe Krod could teach him a thing or two since their stuff has taken pretty similar paths.
