  1. Why would a team give up a decent prospect for either when they could have Soriano for a few million?
  2. Steroids. Countless NFL players get suspended for using illegal substances and barely a peep is spoken.
  3. The last two posts are very true from what I've seen in my 8 years of coaching high school baseball. Most of the kids we get are great athletes who play at least one other sport in school. The problem is baseball takes more than athleticism to be good at. Probably more than any other sport it takes individual mental discipline beyond memorizing a play from a playbook. Situations change in an instant on a baseball field and that standard 6-4-3 double play all of a sudden becomes a pickle between 2nd and 3rd and your pitcher and catcher need to realize their job isn't to just stand and watch. It's not like football or basketball where you can allow your athleticism to take over. I'm just dumbfounded and the total lack of baseball IQ that our kids have and that says nothing about their inability to throw a baseball more than 60 feet.
  4. Didn't he win a World Series with the Cardinals? Either way, the man has done so much in his life I doubt he loses any sleep over the team he doesn't even play for not winning a World Series.
  5. Oh how I would love to see some Cardinals take one in the ribs. Put Matheny on the defensive and make him retaliate. The season's a loss anyway.
  6. Yes, this franchise has been poor in developing talent from anywhere, but these Latin American kids are just 16 years old...literally kids. Some of them may have peaked physically (and mentally) at 16. There is just so much that can change in a person, for good and bad, in the time they go from 16-22 that I can't fault an organization for not having success with those type of players. I'd be interested to see a study on which type of players have the higher success rate: those that are drafted after college or high school or IFA that are signed as teenagers.
  7. I think that map would look pretty similar for the NFL too. Another thing to consider regarding this map and baseball is that California, Texas, and Florida also have large hispanic immigrant populations.
  8. Total speculation on my part but with Nathan down for the year and Detroit having a disaster of a bullpen the last few years I wonder if they would be interested in either. I doubt the dollars or lengths of either of their contracts would be an issue since their owner is willing to do anything to win a WS before he dies.
  9. It's nice to see teams that have intensity, no matter how misguided it may be, instead of the "aw, shucks" Brewers that only know how to say "yes, sir, may I have another." Resigning Prince would not have been good financially for the franchise but I think his presence is greatly missed in the dugout.
  10. Bernie Williams is going to have his number retired by the Yankees. Don't get me wrong, he was a great player, but was he "Number Retired by Yankees" great? I don't think so.
  11. So why is Schafer starting again? Isn't the whole reason Parra is on the team is to played for the injured OF'ers!?!?
  12. Baseball is expensive to play is reason #1. Except you take a look at the Latin American kids who learned to play using a wad of tape for a ball and milk jug for a glove and that's worked out pretty well for them. But the other reason is scholarships. I don't know how many D1 football scholarships are typically given out but it's a heck of a lot more than baseball or any other sport. If you want to excel in a sport with the intent of getting a college scholarship, football is the way to go and it's not even close.
  13. Except the pitch not being a strike. As Rock says, too close to take. Choke up and put the frickin ball in play If it's not a strike, don't swing. Especially where that pitch was when all you can do is hit a weak pop up in the infield. That ball 4 to Braun was the same height as strike 3 to Herrera.
  14. Can someone explain why Schafer has been playing so much lately (except for tonight)? Wasn't Parra brought back for insurance in case of an injury in the OF?
  15. Probably had more to do with who was available than who it actually was. Maybe Wooten hasn't pitched in a couple days where as Knebel, Perez, etc. has thrown back to back days.
  16. http://38.media.tumblr.com/7b31dd273547dd994315d4fb7675765a/tumblr_mglfqla8RA1qzwh1uo1_500.gif Not to pile on unduly, but TLR at the helm in Milwaukee is one of very few things that would make me reconsider being a season ticket holder. Longtime readers here will know that is a strong statement coming from me. I wouldn't absolutely loath LaRussa as manager as long as he plunks a few Cardinals, especially Molina multiple times.
  17. He ran the baseball program at I believe UW-Oshkosh for a few years and I think they had some success while he was there, so there's that.
  18. Statcast seems cool but even to the most information/data driven fan it's going to get old fast.
  19. Actually, yes, the service they provide does make millions of dollars for owners, radio and television networks, the league, and local communities.
  20. This is just like the end of last year. Any game the offense actually does anything the pitching goes to crap.
