  1. He's switching over to radio with Euck now, always a blast
  2. Pretty funny to see Diego in a Reds uniform and starting in CF already today. Like others, I didn't really like Edmonds as a Brewer, but I think he produced a lot better than many gave him credit for. On another Reds note, I think Mike Leake had a great season but the Reds should shut him down. They have a lot of other great options.
  3. Given that the average attendance in all of baseball is down by less than 1% between 2009 and 2010, I feel pretty confident concluding that the vast majority if not all of the Brewers 9% drop in attendance is due to poor on the field performance. The average attendance in MLB in 2009 was 30,298 and in 2010 it is 30,057 (http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance). Other examples demonstrating how team performance drives attendance: the Cincinnati Reds attendance increased by 14% this year and the Padres are up by 8%. Conversly, the three teams that have seen the biggest drop offs are the of the Indians, Blue Jays, and Astros. The economy probably plays some role but my guess is that it is very minor. Unemployment, even less. Even during strong economic times we have an unemployment rate of about 5%, so I don't see how a 4% spike would lead to such a drastic decline in attendance. Only if those 4% newly unemployed are coincidentally the biggest Brewer fans in all the world would that kind of number have a significant impact.
  4. It's too bad. I saw this guy play for the Appleton Foxes in 1994 at age 19 or so when his arms were the size of a normal human being who is athletic. It was clear then he had the rare talent of a superstar baseball player when he was crushing the ball deep over the Goodland Field fences. I don't think he needed the Roids to achieve greatness, but he just didn't have the mind to distance himself from it. If he didn't hit the juice, my guess is he'd be at around 500 homers right now, maybe a little more. The difference is huge because if that were the case, he'd be a lot more distant from Maris' record right now. As it stands, he's pretty close to 761, and I hope he doesn't get there because we don't need to experience that sham all over again.
  5. The Astros, who will send the Yankees $4 million in the deal (of $7.5 million owed to Berkman), will receive pitching prospect Mark Melancon and infield prospect Jimmy Paredes, the Post reports.
  6. Honestly not a beer snob but have to say this had me lol. Comment of the day
  7. I would prefer another year of Fielder + a Type A comp pick over this kind of junk trade. What I don't get is, why do the Astros have to fork over $11 million to complete this deal? That's nearly half his earnings over the next year in a half that he'll be pitching for the Phillies. He earns $5M for the rest of this year, $16M in 2011, and a $2M buyout. In my mind, in this market, that is fair value for a guy like Roy Oswalt, or at least close to fair. Maybe the Stros give up a few million, but $11? What happened here? I don't get it. The Phillies gave up minimal amount to get him in players, and now they have to pay him far less than his market value because the Stros eat the cost. Stupid
  8. Here is my best guess, I'm sure some high, some low, but somewhere in the mid $60's range including buyouts and Prince. $50 without Prince. CONTRACTS Hawkins 4.25 Braun 4.29 Gallardo 3.5 Wolf 9.5 ARBY Prince 16.25 Hart 7 Weeks 5.75 Coffey 2.2 Villanueva 1.1 Parra 0.8 Gomez 2 Inglett 0.7 Pre-ARBY Axe 0.42 McGehe 0.45 Lucroy 0.42 Braddock 0.42 Escobar 0.42 Narv-Dog 0.43 Kottaras 0.42 Gamel 0.42 Stetter 0.42 Cain 0.42 BUYOUTS Trevor 0.5 Riske 0.25 Zaunbie 0.25 SOUP 2 FREE AGENT Bush 0 Counsell 0 Gerut 0 Edmonds 0 GRAND TOTAL 64.58 total w/o Prince 48.33
  9. Not as bad as June 8, 1989 when the Phillies allowed the Pirates to score 10 runs in the first
  10. My vote at this point is Jamie Garcia by a long shot. He has the 3rd best ERA in baseball after only Josh Johnson and Wainwright meaning he is quietly outpitching not only all other rookies but also both AS game starters Ubaldo and David Price. Come to think of it, Garcia should've been on the all star team. I was wondering if the Baseball Writers have a history of voting for hype over performance. I can't remember a lot of ROY snubs. My feeling is ROY chatter will pick up at the end of the year and Garcia will get his mention, if he can keep this up. That said, I can't stand the Cardinals and I hope he gets rocked in his next several starts and the award goes to Strasburg. Strasbug has just 8 starts but a 2.01 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 48 innings. Let's say he doubles that in his next 8 starts before getting shut down. I think that's worth it. One guy on par with Mike Leake I just want to mention is Jonathan Neise. It sure was great when Pat Listasch won over Kenny Lofton.
  11. He would still play the All Star game as a Brewer, since he was voted in as one. I think that has happened before where a player was traded just before but still wore his old teams uniform.I was thinking about this in the case of Cliff Lee who is an All Star and was just traded to the Rangers. I wonder if he'll have the M's jersey on? Kind of weird
  12. OK quoting myself here, that doesn't make sense, we are at home, if we score we win. no trevor save. DUH
  13. Axe is clutch, I didn't know he could throw 97. Let's get a run here and it is Trevor Time.
  14. Surprisingly that was the 4th consecutive dominant outing by Ross Ohlendorf. He's been on a tear since late June. Now that he is out of the game we can come back and win a game finally.
  15. Not sure if this is a joke but I agree. Personally I find all the activity on the new mlb scoreboards annoying, like when the players enlarged faces blink that is creepy, I've had my fill of kiss cam, and it seems like they are more for advertising than anything else. The other thing is that they shouldn't let players pick their in between song music anymore. I was at my first game at MP in two years this week, and I couldn't believe the taste in music chosen by the Brewers lineup. If they showed in game highlights on the scoreboard, and highlights from around mlb, I would like that, but I find that the information pumped out to be mostly an annoying distraction from the game. So I would prefer the old County Stadium scoreboard. One thing I like however is "Make some Noise" with the barometer and techno music. That gets me every time.
  16. Well here is a chance for Capuano to earn another start, perhaps? You have to figure Narvy is in the Dog House after that one.
  17. During both 2009 and 2010 Casey McGehee has performed better in the Major Leagues than Mat Gamel has performed in the Minor Leagues, so I am a little baffled by this discussion. Beyond that we have four rookies getting regular playing time including Escobar who probably doesn't even deserve to start right now, Braddock and Axford almost immediately moved into the most critical bullpen roles, and Lucroy is the #1 starting catcher now.
  18. To me Davis is the only person that makes sense. I'm sorry but this move tells me that the organization has not learned a lesson despite being repeatedly beaten over the head with roster management most of the season, particularly the first couple months. Going with Hoffman over Axford for too long, Suppan/Davis over Parra/Narv, not starting Lucroy until they were forced to, and etc cost the Brewers A LOT of wins this year in my opinion, perhaps as many as 8.5 or more. Anyway, if I am forced to make a decision who to replace the first guy I would take out of the rotation is Narveson. Bush has had the best results so far. He has pitched well practially all season and by my observation he has really only had two bad outings out of 15 starts. By comparison Davis looked bad in almost 100% of his starts prior to injury.... Like others say Parra is the most talented of the bunch, he is the most important part of the Brewers future, he has looked pretty good all season, and we need to give him a good look as a starter. Narveson, by default, is the odd man out because, despite some greatness here and there, he really hasn't been that fantastic (5.17 era), and unlike Parra I don't see the future of the Brewers rotation riding on his skills. Like someone else said, someone like Loe could just as well take the 4/5 spot in the rotation instead of Narv. I like Narv-Dog and I want him to stay in the rotation but he is my reluctant pick. He deserves to start over DD though, no doubt about that.
  19. I was thinking, since Hoffman has been pitching well lately maybe it’s time to move him to a more critical role. Just admit that Axford has the closer role locked down. Hoffman can come into close games in the middle innings when Loe and Braddock are not available. We need someone else to step up because Villy & Coffey haven’t been getting it done.
  20. Suppan should be starting against the Brewers on 4th of July.
  21. Really? Yeah, of course it's not a problem. He's only thrown the second most pitches in the league this year. He's being overworked, again. That was an interesting link. I was looking back on the last ten years of pitch counts and keeping tabs on player injuries. This is not scientific but it did not appear to me that the guys who threw the top 10 most pitches are getting injured at a rate any higher than the guys who were ranked let's say 30-40. Just because you say he threw the 2nd most pitches in the league this year, I'm not going to automatically assume that is a bad thing. The difference between the guy who threw the 2nd most pitches and the guy who threw the 20th most pitches is an average of about 5-7 pitches per game. I think Yovani needs those 5-7 pitches to get through six innings. A big reason is because he has the highest pitch count per plate appearance in the leaugue: 4.11.
  22. I think that something like 30/30 managers would leave Gallardo in to get the shutout when he was at 108 pitches after 8 innings. Even if Maccha is "managing for his job", this is not an example of that.
  23. Ok you guys are probably right, Axe should get the night off. I’m just worried that Hoffman will come in and get one or two saves and all of a sudden he’ll be the permanent closer again even though Axeford is clearly the better pitcher at this point in time. I do like the direction that SenatorShriv is going in: be flexible with the closer. Axe could get the occasional two inning save, and possibly pitch mid relief in crucial situations, possibly giving Hoffman the chance to close some saves here and there. I’ve never been a big fan of the designated closer idea anyway. But I do think Axeford is the better pitcher so he should be the primary guy. As far as Hoffman goes I hope that when/if he gets a chance, he will be on a short leash. If he goes out there in the 9th inning and looks bad, pull him before he has a chance to blow the game, just like Ron Washington did the other day with Felix against the Brewers. I thought that was a brilliant move.
