  1. expect a rainout in Montana. We've had rain probably 13 of 17 days this month. I can't see games getting played till Wednesday, unless Helena's weather is that different from where I am
  2. Even if they're right and we can't keep Greinke, I'd consider arbitration worth it for Greinke and Marcum....if they sign elsewhere, that's likely 4 draft picks with potentially higher ceilings than the prospects we'd trade for would have. The only free agent to worry about leaving without compensation is K-Rod. As for Aoki, he's deserving the chance to play nearly every day now. I've been down on Hart a lot for his inconsistencies, especially defensively. Realistically, if he's your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd best hitter, you're likely in trouble. Thus far he's been our 4th best hitter (Braun, Lucroy, and Aoki ahead of him), and if Weeks gets it going then we're in good shape. Think of that...if Weeks gets going and Lucroy comes back, Hart is our 5th or 6th best hitter. This lineup is not THAT bad. Also, as much as I don't like Hart in the OF, I love him at first base. It's been a joy having him and Gamel at 1st base this season after watching Fielder the last 6 years over there. I love seeing Hart's right knee dirty every night as it's how 1st basemen are taught to go after low throws. Prince never did that! I used to think Hart was a liability that had to be moved, but I now love him at 1st base. I'd be tempted to let Gamel play OF next year since it should increase our overall defensive abilities.
  3. clancy, what's wrong with Ramirez? His last month has been very good, and his overall numbers are fine. I'd like a few more homers, but won't complain
  4. I'll sort of defend HiAndTight here. I think one bad thing about the current era of baseball fans is that we are all somewhat knowledgeable about all things, including the minor leagues. A decade ago people wouldn't have been clamoring for Schafer after 1 good year, they wouldn't have been clamoring for Green after 2 good years (with 2 or 3 years in between), and they wouldn't have been advocating to sell for pieces that may never be as good as Randy Wolf or Nyjer Morgan. Remember, the minor leagues serve to make the big league team better. We have lots of talent this year, and a great rotation that is just rounding into form. Throw in that our bullpen should improve, and I just can't fathom selling. As for Adambr2, of course you want to sell. Nearly every thread I've seen you comment in or start in the last 6 months has been advocating a complete sell-off, "all players with talent must go" approach. Personally, it's been fun to watch the Brewers the last few years (except 2010), and I'd hate to go into Kansas City's perpetual rebuilding mode where we trade everyone for prospects year after year. We are in the race for the NL Central this year. We get an all-star catcher in the next few weeks, we just need Weeks and Hart to start hitting.
  5. I love seeing Josh Prince's OBP creeping towards .370. He's having the offensive season i'd hoped for, only at the wrong position
  6. Gindl and Schafer would ride the pine in the majors. Nyjer had one bad month (april 55 at bats), one solid month (may 69 at bats) and in June has only 20 at bats. Its not time to give up on him.
  7. Much as I enjoy contributing, I'm too flakey for link report duties. I keep busy in the summer (I'm a teacher) and ont get o check it every day/night. Also once Aug 1st comes aroun, I'm busy coaching. Thanks or thinking of me, but I just know I'm not reliable enough
  8. Reid Nichols should try to hook him up with Tom Wilhelmsen. From quitting on the Brewers to participating in a no-no.
  9. sometimes the old guys have enough magic left for 1-2 good years. It's worth a try. I wonder if he's now in better shape and healthy enough to play the field. He used to great there until his early 30s
  10. we need more OF there again (remember the year we had 4 or 5 C's in the lineup in Helena??? Also, frustrating to note that we have no position players listed that have been drafted in the top 15 rounds of any recent draft. too many years of neglecting hitters!
  11. One would assume that Scarpetta would get claimed in the off-season if waived. Teams don't pass on solid starting prospects with big curveballs.
  12. Best of luck to him. I enjoyed following him in the boxscores and loved reading about his tools, but if this is what he wants, then more power to him. It's hard for us to understand at times. I'm a teacher and a coach, and I'd give it all up if I had a chance to chase a dream. He has a golden opportunity and wants to become a PE teacher and coach. His choice.
  13. I'd take him at 80% over Estrada
  14. Coulter carried himself very well in the interview during the Brewers game. Lawrie never had an idea of the big picture, and never had patience. Coulter seems more mature at 18 than Lawrie at 22. Lawrie wanted to be a catcher until he found he stunk at it and couldn't get to the big leagues fast. So he moved to 2nd base where he played poor defense and found he wasn't going to get to the big leagues fast. The result, he got traded to an organization that let's him do his thing and he got moved to 3b...and promoted to the big leagues. I think Clint understands this is a long process and should do better at catcher because of the attitude.
  15. Would have been nice to have him before, but with Aoki playing well we now aren't in need of a 1st baseman as much. Of course, he'd be useful in the next two weeks with a DH. it's amazing how he's never found a home in baseball because of two issues--health and strikeouts. He has almost 200 homers. He was adequate defensively at 3b before his back problems. What's interesting is he has only about 30 fewer home runs (in 1800 fewer plate appearances) than our former OF Geoff Jenkins, with one point separating them in career OPS+. Yet Jenkins made more in some years than Branyan has made in his entire career. He's nice depth and a pinch hitting option. For a struggling team with a DH, he'd be the cheapest source of home runs in the league. edit: I was indifferent for a long time, but the arguments won me over that he doesn't deserve his reputations for being a has-been (perhaps now...but 3-4 years ago people treated him like "that ship has sailed"). Has there been a more polarizing player on brewerfan? Keith Ginter? Ronnie Belliard? Carlos Gomez? Edit2: 200 homers, not k's
  16. The Greinke trade is interesting because we gave up 4 people that have a chance to make an impact in the majors. There aren't many trades like that. Normally the best prospect trades are like the Marcum deal where it's a 1-for-1, stud prospect for good big leaguer. If Odorizzi were in our system, it likely would have been him called up, not Fiers. He has a chance to be a very good starting pitcher for a long time. Cain can be a productive toolsy player for a long time. Reminds me a bit of Mike Cameron. Escobar is an elite defensive SS, but not much of a hitter. Still, one would imagine his best days are still ahead of him. Jeffress probably will never work out, but may stick in baseball a while because of his velocity. If we traded him, you could hope for a Sabathia-like return (Brantley has worked out and Laporta still might), but as Danzig pointed out an acquiring team likely wouldn't give up for him without a contract extension in hand, since there's no draft pick compensation
  17. I don't get it...last year it worked fine with a connection that varies between 3-5 mb/s and this year it is awful for me with a connection between 7-15 mb/s. Anyone else having any problems with this?
  18. Okay, I see what you're saying...if you factor in the prospect of losing the star player and wanting to get a AAA/AA player rather than draft picks, then that probably helps balance things out a lot. For the most part I don't like trading a player if we're competitive. This team has a chance to be competitive, and I'd rather let Marcum and Greinke walk with draft-pick compensation than get less-than stellar AA/AAA prospects.
  19. I believe it was Baseball America (but I'm probably wrong) that did an analysis of prospect trades a few years ago. They generally don't work out. Yes, Econ classes would state that teams will only make trades if both sides can benefit. Edit: I looked and I can't find the study, but I'm probably using bad search terms. This was a topic talked about probably 2 years ago
  20. Long Live 3TO! He's more useful than Conrad and Ishikawa
  21. I'm not too surprised. He hasn't played this spring and he likely won't play this summer (although some newer quotes seem to indicate perhaps Instructional League or a bit of time before that).
  22. I know I posted a bunch that night....but I'm still baffled why anyone would eat a cheese sandwich when they could have a grilled cheese. It's vastly superior in every way! MMM...molten cheese Great memories, and it's funny seeing that we just drafted Mark Rogers and people were joking that we might need to call him up to start the next game. Wow that was a long time ago.
  23. Nice to see Aoki's OBP over .350 now. He's at the point now where I'm comfortable with Hart staying at 1b with Aoki playing in RF. I wouldn't have him as a full-time starter in RF, but he should get the bulk of the playing time
  24. I don't feel like looking back, but how many leads has our bullpen blown this year? I'd say I miss Hawkins and Saito, except they are both on the DL and have combined for 8 IP
