  1. I think the reason this deal hasn't come together YET is that the Brewers are waiting to see if they sign Shields and are keeping that money free until then. If they sign Shields, the Papelbon deal won't happen. If Shields signs elsewhere, the Papelbon deal will happen quick.
  2. I'm guessing he gets 4 years $80 million from...the Brewers. I don't know how they will afford Gomez or Lucroy in the future but with Ramirez, Lohse, Parra all coming off the books in 2016, it is beginning to make sense. If they keep Nelson, he goes back to being the 6th option and replacement for Lohse in the rotation next season when they will run out a rotation of Shields, Garza, Peralta, Fiers, Nelson.
  3. I have a weak stomach for Cardinal propaganda...
  4. I don't see the need to flip Nelson in the case of a Shields signing. The offense seems pretty well set right now. They were 5th in the NL in runs and OPS last year with basically the same lineup other than the improved 1B situation (and hopefully improved production from SS, RF and a full year of Parra instead of Schafer coming off the bench). And adding Shields would solidify the rotation and allow Fiers and Nelson to battle it out for the 5th spot with the other adding needed protection at AAA. Not to mention, we'll likely need Nelson in a year when Lohse is gone. You very well might be right that a Nelson deal isn't a necessity. However, acquiring Shields alone and simply replacing Nelson in the rotation with Shields does not move the needle much and wouldn't push the Brewers into frontrunners in the NL Central or establish them as legit contenders for the pennant. This is why I would anticipate a corresponding move like a trade of Nelson to add more offense.
  5. If money is figured out and the only thing holding this back is the player compensation, I think we will be seeing Papelbon in Milwaukee. I imagine Philly wants one specific player and the Brewers will compromise by sending two players of lesser value than the one alone.
  6. Sounds like a commercial that would make me vomit every single time I saw it...
  7. Like the optimism Pete...Like I said I am torn because I could see the Brewers becoming quite good with a Shields signing and a Nelson deal for a legit 1B. Dealing Nelson though is not something I want to do because it flies in the face of how I want the Brewers to be run. I would rather they stay put with where they currently are but a Shields signing without a corresponding move that deals Nelson for more immediate O really makes no sense to me.
  8. I hope you are right TLB. You are right that I sell Lind a little short, as I think he will be seeing a ton of LOOGY and LHP which will necessitate a Maldonado PH and he isn't exactly a stud hitter. With a more complete 1B like a Fielder-type, where the splits against LHP aren't so dramatic, I think the Brewers would have a much better chance.
  9. "Shouldn't" doesn't mean they couldn't afford. Now would it be good business? I can't say either way given the merchandise Lucroy drives but I will agree that is a ton to pay for a 31 year old catcher. As for Gomez, he will be a 31 year old FA after 2016. I'm sure the Brewers would offer him the standard 5 year $100 million deal or $20m per year. Whether he takes it or not doesn't mean they can't afford him as I can't imagine a team paying a 31 year old CF that plays reckless much more than $20m per.
  10. I'm sorry but the Brewers never will be able to afford these players. Huh? By the time these guys hit FA, you will likely have a rotation with Peralta, Nelson, Fiers, Jungmann all either in the early years of arbitration or pre-arbitration. Same with Davis, Scooter, Segura, Sardinas, Arcia in the everyday lineup. The only one making serious coin at that time will be Braun. Not sure why they couldn't afford to keep Lucroy who: -Will be in his early 30s -Has already begun to transition off of catching thereby diminishing his $$ and -Is the face of the franchise and arguably the most beloved Brewer since Yount Or Gomez who, granted will be expensive, but by no means will be out of the Brewers price range given the state of the Brewers payroll as we can predict it today.
  11. I have such mixed emotions about this... On one hand, I like the idea of a Shields, Lohse, Garza, Peralta, Fiers rotation a ton. However, I still think the Brewers could be a little light on O at 1B, SS, 2B and to be honest, 3B, to be true contenders. Trading Nelson to get you back something that could immensely help your chances of contending this season but could hurt once Lohse goes and the 5th spot in the rotation has to be filled by an unknown like Jungmann. I guess for me the real problem with signing Shields is that by itself I don't think it moves the Brewers from fringe contender to a true pennant contender in 2015. Now Shields and a trade of Nelson for a complete 1B like Fielder (I know) or Chris Davis, or a MLB-ready 3B prospect like Cecchini should Ramirez fall off or get hurt, and you might have something for 2015. A rotation like the one mentioned above combined with a middle of the order that has Gomez-Braun-Fielder/Davis-Lucroy-Ramirez-Davis has a real shot at contention.
  12. I think the "ideal" situation for the Brewers moving forward after 2015 is a rotation consisting of: 1. Peralta, a budding high end 2/low end 1 2. Nelson, a potential Peralta clone 3. Fiers, becoming a Lohse clone. In other words, mid 3s ERA type of pitcher with a low WHIP 4. Jungmann, a sinker baller with an ERA in the high 3s 5. Garza until another pitcher develops (Smith) or is traded for like Jordan Zimmerman Coupling that ideal with the lefty in Smith and some combo of Thornburg-Knebel in the 8th-9th and the Brewers have the makings of a wonderful pitching staff. Now I know that's all very unlikely but I think that's what they are truly hoping for.
  13. This is starting to sound like another Ike Davis for Tyler Thornburg type of situation. If Papelbon is still so good, no one would hesitate dealing for him regardless of the option. Pass...
  14. Worst....Trade....Ever ...and now I too am worried
  15. What about Yonder Alonso? Yes, I understand that the Brewers have Adam Lind at 1B already but Alonso is 4 years younger than Lind and has a better slash line against LHP .240/.305/.344 than him .212/.257/.330. Additionally, the Brewers would have him for 2015, 2016 and 2017 before he could become a free agent. I have always been intrigued by Alonso and getting him out of Petco might be a boon for his #s.
  16. Honestly...I am getting very tired of the discrepancies in the Brewers/Pirates/Royals ability to sign players of this ilk versus the Yankees/Red Sox/Dodgers. The ideas that pace of play and lack of offense in baseball are the reason why fan support is down versus the NFL and other sports is moronic and completely ignoring the real reason. The fact that the best player in the NFL plays in Green Bay and the top two players in the NBA play in Cleveland and Oklahoma City speaks volumes as to why the popularity in those leagues is rising while baseball needs to reinvent itself with pitch clocks and the potential banning of defensive strategies to attract more fans to this game. Balance the salary structure and you might be surprised that you have to do little to nothing else to attract the casual fan, Mr. Manfred.
  17. No thanks on Shields. In a vacuum maybe but with no true void in the staff currently, 1-5 are filled, his age and the draft pick attached to signing him, I have very little interest. Zimmerman on the other hand I am very interested in. If the Brewers could somehow have a 1-2-3 of Zimmerman, Peralta and Nelson for the next 5 years I would be very excited for their chances.
  18. Without going back through the entire thread, has there been any mention of possible prospects that the Phillies are looking at as a return?
  19. I understand a K-Rod deal better than a Papelbon one given the difference in salary and that K-Rod doesn't require a trade of a prospect, but man...K-Rod scares me. Think I actually would prefer Papelbon but not at the cost of a prospect of any substance.
  20. Love the Barrelman but come on...pick a logo/era and stick to it. It's like this team has some kind of an identity crisis. Players love the M with barley. Fans love the ball and glove. Now we have the 70s era M, which is solid, but man I wish we could somehow streamline all of this eras and stick with one and make it timeless.
  21. This is what I THINK RR will do, not what I would do. I personally think you're going to see a TON of Lucroy at 1B and Maldonado at C this season especially when a LHP is brought in to pitch to Lind. RHP 1. Scooter 2B 2. Braun RF 3. Lucroy C 4. Gomez CF 5. Ramirez 3B 6. Davis LF 7. Lind 1B 8. Segura SS LHP 1. Sardinas 2B 2. Braun RF 3. Lucroy 1B 4. Gomez CF 5. Ramirez 3B 6. Davis LF 7. Maldonado C 8. Segura SS
  22. Agreed...other than Uecker and Pat Hughes, Provus is my favorite radio voice. He remains my hope for the Brewers voice once Uecker retires...even though I don't see that happening given his role with the Twins.
  23. What the Brewers main logo should be. This logo IS the Brewers and is generally considered to be one of the most iconic logos of all time. While the current M is nice, there is nothing "special" about it. The ball and glove...no better logo.
  24. After the quiet Brewer offseason that seems like they have regressed and the horror of the final 5 minutes of the Packer game on Sunday, I need a little sports cheer up... Brewerfan, please get me excited for the Brewers in 2015. On January 20, looking at the rest of the NL and the Central in particular, I find it difficult to imagine much more than a .500 record and a third-fourth place finish. Added to that, I see a farm system that still is behind the Cubs, Pirates and Cardinals which means the Brewers could be in line for mediocrity or worse for a while. While I am usually the eternal optimist when it comes to the Brewers, I am finding it a little hard to be so right now given the MLB roster and the farm system. I want to get pointed back in the right direction of blind optimism. Brewerfan, do your best...
  25. In a vacuum, would I love to see Fielder. I know I know he's older, he overpaid, "he's a former Brewer and that's all I am looking at." He's also a ton better than any 1B we have on the roster now. It just makes a ton of sense to me if they could put a package together that would include Texas throwing in money to fill that hole at 1B and not go in with Lind and whoever his platoon mate will be. Prince is owed $144 million over the next 6 years from Texas. $30 million of that is being paid by Detroit, so the Rangers resposnibility is $114 over 6. If the Brewers could somehow coax say an additional $20 million from the Rangers and have Prince for 6 years @ $84 million, $14 million per year, I think that would be an excellent return for Gallardo. I don't think this precludes the Brewers from making additional moves to secure other options like Zimmerman either. Fielder essentially replaces Gallardo's salary. With Ramirez and Lohse coming off the books after this season, a Zimmerman could slot nicely there. Understood that Braun's contract kicks up as well but that could be offset by removing Parra's salary after this year as well. Gomez I think will be dealt, maybe as part of a Zimmerman deal, so there may be no need to keep salary for him. Lucroy is my only concern but what I wouldn't give to see a middle of the order with Gomez-Lucroy-Fielder-Braun-Ramirez in 2015.
