  1. This is certainly depressing. The only real saving grace to this is that we SHOULD have some time to buy through multiple years of drafts given a majority of our everyday lineup is younger and controlled for multiple more seasons (Braun, Gomez, Lucroy, Segura). If Davis/Schafer and Gennett develop into everyday players, the lineup may only have issues at 1B and 3B over the next 3-4 seasons. Moreover, our rotation could be the same provided health and development (Gallardo, Garza, Peralta, Thornburg, Nelson, Jungmann, etc...) It's certainly not ideal, but whether or not a Astros-style rebuild is in our future will depend heavily on the next 2-3 drafts.
  2. 2B Available: Schoop, Flaherty, Bonifacio, Beckham, Sogard, Barney My bench currently has a need for middle IF and the only SS available are:Owings, Tejada and Hechevarria. Rather have the potential of Baez than any of those scrubs.
  3. SITUATION: I had Jurickson Profar as my starting 2B until he hurt his shoulder. Omar Infante was to be the backup and he is now my starter. I want to have a backup 2B on the roster. My last two bench spots are currently Rickie Weeks and Javier Baez (Cubs prospect) who may get called up next week, he may not be called up until August or he may not be called up period. Scooter Gennett is on waivers. QUESTION: Of Weeks, Scooter and Baez, which two do you pick to fill out the last two spots of your fantasy bench?
  4. I don't get why everyone think Weeks' 2012 was terrible. He hit .230/.328/.400 with a wRC + of 99, ie basically dead average. It was disappointing after his 2011 but to pretend the it was the start of what happened last year is a stretch. It is also the likely ceiling of Gennett. Amen on all of this endaround... The only area I disagree with is the Scooter ceiling. Whereas I agree with the OBP & SLG, I think Scooter's AVG ceiling is around .290 - .300. Still gives you a picture into the type of hitter Rickie is versus the type of hitter Scooter is. Rickie's floor is Scooter's ceiling and I like Scooter.
  5. You guys are forgetting one very important thing...DM wants 1B to be played by a 1B this season. Unfortunately, George is a C and as much as I like him, is a pretty terrible hitter. I'd rather run Reynolds out there everyday.
  6. They might have gotten the better player. Uh no...JB12 let's at least keep your Rickie hate based in reality.
  7. I like outside of the box thinking to try and improve the Brewers. Estrada has seemingly gotten a ton of love recently on the internet machine and like TC07 has stated, only has 2 years of team control left and is no sure thing to outpitch Thornburg in 2014. Why not look into the possibility of moving him to improve the Brewers in other areas namely 1B and 3B? Surely, someone like the Mariners would be interested in the possibility of acquiring Estrada and may be willing to part with talent in order to do so. Ackley, Smoak, Franklin, etc...are all players that may be able to help the Brewers immediately and long term at 3B, 1B or 2B. Franklin is not a FA until after 2019, Smoak after 2016 and Ackley after 2017, which means controlling the players 6 years, 3 years and 4 years. A package of two of them for Estrada and filler is a route I wish the Brewers would take. Maximizing Estrada now, who very well could be replaceable immediately by Thornburg or Nelson is one way of improving the Brewers for the long term. Plus Estrada, I doubt is a candidate for an extension after the next two seasons, so why not maximize him by acquiring 6 years of Franklin and say 3 years of Smoak for 2 years of Estrada?
  8. And given this I would much rather just keep Rickie as I think he has more value: 1. Playing as a RH part of the platoon than Bianchi or Herrera and 2. Any mediocre A ball prospect we would receive in a trade.
  9. Starling Marte just signed a 6 year $31 million (~$5m AAV) deal for Pittsburgh and Simmons just got 7 years $58 million (~$8m AAV)...I say split the difference and give Segura ~$6.5 AAV over 7 years (7 years $45.5 m) Baseball Reference had Simmons as a 6.9 WAR player in 2013, Marte as a 5.4 WAR player and Segura as a 3.9 WAR player. Given position scarcity at SS, I am willing to pay Segura more but not at the level of Simmons. If Segura doesn't take this then I think he has an inflated sense of worth in today's market.
  10. I mean, if we're talking upside, Weeks has basically been the better offensive player at every level of ball & every MLB season save last year. Obviously if a person believes his 2013 is what to expect going forward, then yes, Francisco has more upside. I'm not convinced Rickie's just done as a hitter. Agreed...nor do I condone a Scooter/Bianchi platoon barring something unforeseen like Rickie being included in a trade package brings us a long term solution at 1B or 3B.
  11. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/rangers-seek-depth-at-second-and-catcher.html Rickie to Texas? Mitch Moreland perhaps?
  12. Thanks CWH...I have already forgotten about Morris. Shows you what I think of him as a prospect apparently...Kevin Barker 2.0.
  13. As I posted in a different thread, I am ok with the platoon at 2B but what is really hard to swallow is two 1B where neither can play the OF. That makes the construction of this roster exceptionally challenging.
  14. I would sign him for depth at Triple AAA but he appears to be no better than Sean Halton. What happens if Mark Reynolds were to get hurt? I know I would rather run out Halton or LaPorta on an everyday basis rather than Old Man O. Unfortunately, Father Time has caught Lyle.
  15. Love the Wang call. Like the Bianchi over Herrera call. Am pretty indifferent to the Duke over Wooten call. Duke is just a guy and I think he's going to be gone when a healthy Gorz returns. I am ok with the bench of: C Maldonando 2B Weeks/Gennett OF Schafer UTIL Bianchi As has been discussed at length, the only real area of pain is the 1B situation. I like Reynolds as a part time player but Overbay is just a waste. A guy like Logan Morrison, who isn't a world beater, would do wonders for the roster given his positional flexibility for 1B or RF/LF. Lyle is just a burden on the roster right now.
  16. The next 3TO Milwaukee Legend. Following in the footsteps of Mr. Deer and Mr. Branyan... http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/a9/f8/a9f8d0a0c025cabf537cf30a3cfa33df.jpg?itok=4yJgB_Cs
  17. Bump this discussion back to the top now with a different spin... Now that we know it will be Reynolds and Overbay, do you think the best option is a hard platoon or would you go with a soft platoon of Reynolds 80% and Overbay 20%? I prefer the idea of the soft platoon, especially given RR's likelihood of wanting to trot out a lineup of Overbay at 1B and Reynolds at 3B when Ramirez needs a day off. I would much prefer Bianchi to start at 3B on the days Ramirez is off and Reynolds-Overbay remaining strictly 1B.
  18. Now that we (likely) know all the players, and RR's set in stone #1 - #5 of Gomez, Segura, Braun, Ramirez, Lucroy...for #6 - #8 I would go: vs. RHP 6. Davis 7. Scooter 8. Reynolds vs. LHP 6. Weeks 7. Davis 8. Reynolds I think you have to split Weeks and Reynolds, as they might strike their way out of innings.
  19. In a season where the phrase "go for it" has been uttered again after the Garza signing, it sure does seem awfully shortsighted to have a 1B rotation of Reynolds/Overbay. There is little to no upside there, and if the Reynolds/Overbay combination simply matched last season's stats, the Brewers would be looking at the following line from their 1B: .247/.315/.403, 21 HR, 75 RBI That is hideous and even that is unlikely as I think Overbay, who provided most of the AVG and HR, is going to regress substantially this season. Having said all of this, who could they trade for that would provide a better line than that? My personal favorite, Ike Davis, I think would match the AVG and boost the OBP and SLG, but would cost something in a trade. Mike Carp provide something better than that? I don't know. And either of these guys might not be a long term solution to the issue as well. It's frustrating anyway you slice it...
  20. So the plan would be to platoon Reynolds/Overbay at 1B and Bianchi/Scooter at 2B? Or two players who are bench players (Reynolds and Bianchi), a player that should be retired (Overbay) and a player who should not be an everyday player yet (Scooter) at this point in his career? Add into the equation another unproven quantity in LF and you have a recipe for a mid 70 win team.
  21. Unfortunately, there are no winners when your choices are Juan Francisco and Lyle Overbay. The fact that Melvin stuck the Brewers in the position to have the heavier side of a platoon with these guys speaks either to the lack of talent available or his inability to judge the market. I tend to think its the former rather than the latter. Would any of you have given the contracts that were handed out to Loney or Corey Hart? I wouldn't. A trade of Thornburg for Ike Davis? Nope. Moreland, Smoak, Morrison? No rumors were ever mentioned that two of those guys (Moreland & Smoak) were TRULY available and Morrison was traded when DM thought Hart would be back. This isn't to defend Melvin and his decision making, rather it brings up a larger point of what is and or was available. Francisco...man I didn't want him on the roster but Overbay is done, which means Francisco has the ability to provide more simply from the maturing process given he is only 26. Reynolds hopefully plays everyday but I would prefer him as the power bat off the bench and backup 1B/3B who gets 2 starts per week. I know it's pointless now, but I am clinging to the hope of a late Spring trade and an Overbay DFA before the beginning of the season.
  22. Good riddance... Nothing personal, but he just reminds me of a bad time in Brewers history with CC leaving and then the Angels getting the pick that ended up being Mike Trout due to Mark Teixeira being worth more than CC in free agency. Absolutely maddening...
  23. I have not seen or read anything about a change in his abilities at 1B. Because of that, I will assume he remains a lousy defensive 1B and honestly, even though his spring statistics make him appear to be a changed player at the plate i.e. more walks, spring statistics are always pretty meaningless to me. I just can't tolerate the idea of having Overbay/Francisco receiving the majority of 1B playing time in 2014. I just don't see any benefit to the Brewers.
  24. Nor would I. Rather, if I were to have to choose today as to which rotation I would prefer to have on March 19, 2014, I would choose the Brewers. Like you said though, Cole & Taillon in a 5 game series vs. 2 of Gallardo, Garza & Lohse makes it a different story but in terms of SP depth #1 - #5, I think the Brewers have the Pirates beat. Additionally, this doesn't count the Brewers offense versus the Pirates offense, where I think the Brewers are significantly better as well.
