  1. Fair enough... actually, more than 'fair enough.' Not that either of Reynolds or Dunn are what I call a great option...
  2. Other than K-Rod, I would take a flier on Bailey or Hanrahan. That is about the extent of my list from what I see here.
  3. While he may not still be the same hitter he once was, the ~40 point edge Dunn has over Reynolds in OBP alone makes him significantly more valuable as a hitter. Now, Reynolds's glove v. Dunn's 'glove' at 1B might mitigate that, but still. To call them the same hitter over the course of their careers isn't accurate (not to mention the difference in SLG & overall OPS gap -- .861 to .793). How about this then? Since 2011 Dunn has put up the following slash line in 1752 PA: .197/.317/.405, with 86 HR, 224 RBI, OPS+ 93. Reynolds since 2011 in 1662 PA .221/.321/.438, with 81 HR, 222 RBI, OPS+ 107. Since 2011, Dunn and Reynolds are basically the same player and it could be easily argued that Reynolds has been better
  4. I posted this in the Billy Butler thread and think it still holds relevance here: Player 1: 3398 PA, 194 HR, 403 BB, 1118 Ks, .232/.329/.485 HR: 1 in every 17.5 ABs BB: 1 in every 8.4 ABs K: 1 in every 3.0 ABs Player 2: 3947 PA, 202 HR, 459 BB, 1276 Ks, .233/.329/.464 HR: 1 in every 19.5 ABs BB: 1 in every 8.5 ABs K: 1 in every 3.0 ABs Player 3: 7817 PA, 440 HR, 1246 BB 2220 Ks, .238/.366/.495 HR: 1 in every 17.8 ABs BB: 1 in every 6.3 ABs K: 1 in every 3.5 ABs Player 1: Russell Branyan Player 2: Mark Reynolds Player 3: Adam Dunn If the Brewers are going to upgrade 1B, I think it should/will either be with a flamed out prospect with potential still like Smoak or Morrison or a Billy Butler type. Adam Dunn is an older, more expensive version of Mark Reynolds.
  5. I think the same could be said for the Pirates rotation as well with Cole, Liriano, Rodriguez, Morton & Locke. Will Cole have a sophomore slump? Will Liriano revert to the form he had in Minnesota/Chicago? Will Wandy be fully healthy? Is Morton ever going to be consistent? Which Locke will show up, the 2013 first half or 2013 second half? Going into 2014, the Pirates have the best pitcher in Cole but other than that I would rather have the Brewers rotation 2-5 than the Pirates rotation.
  6. Man I would take that in a heartbeat! That to me is the absolute peak of what Reynolds could do for the Crew in 2014. I am expecting something more in line with .220/.310/.440, 21 HR 65 RBI.
  7. Agreed...If the Brewers stay relatively healthy and everyone plays pretty much to their career averages, I think the Brewers should project to win between 84-86 games.
  8. I feel you TLB...however, who would have thought that Gamel would blow out ACLs in 2012 and 2013, as well as have Hart's knees fail him as well? Sticking a platoon of Reynolds/Francisco/Overbay at 1B in 2014 when you had all offseason to acquire a better option is downright embarrassing.
  9. Reynolds is 30, Smoak is 27 and Morrison is 26. Pre-2010 Smoak was the #13 prospect in all of baseball and Morrison the #20 according to Baseball America. I know baseball is littered with failed prospects galore so just because they were ranked that high doesn't mean it will translate at the MLB level. Moreover, I am not advocating trading anything of value i.e. Tyler Thornburg or Jimmy Nelson. I am more advocating for the acquisition of talent given a reasonable price tag. Everything being equal, I would be surprised if any diehard Brewer fans would prefer to have Reynolds or Francisco at 1B over Smoak or Morrison. Given this, why would we not at least attempt to pry one of those guys out of Seattle given our glaring need at 1B and their relative depth at 1B/RF/DH provided they sign Cruz?
  10. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/02/mariners-in-talks-with-cruz-willing-to-offer-multiple-years-1.html Cruz to Seattle may be happening shortly. I am really beginning to believe that DM will jump at the possibility of acquiring the odd man out for our 1B (Smoak/Morrison). It makes too much sense as either Smoak/Morrison are upgrades over Reynolds/Francisco/Overbay.
  11. Damn, Marmol scares me... He was good for the Dodgers late last season... 21.1 IP 14 H 19 BB 27 SO 2.53 ERA Throughout his career he doesnt give up HRs but those walks scare me... Although the Ks are nice. Man I really do not want anything to do with Marmol. He has been pretty bad since 2011 and would much prefer we sign K-Rod. I'm sorry but a WHIP of 1.38, 1.54 & 1.6 as a RP is pretty unacceptable.
  12. The would be a horrible trade for the Brewers. Totally agree with you. I am not advocating for it. Just asking questions as to whether anyone thinks the Brewers are actually moving forward by dealing Estrada to "potentially" fill two holes on the IF long-term.
  13. So having said that....if you are the Brewers would you be willing to deal Estrada and Davis for Smoak and Ackley? Smoak starts at 1B, Ackley at 2B, Gindl/Schafer move into LF, Thornburg into Estrada's SP role. Lineup of: SS Segura 2B Ackley RF Braun 3B Ramirez C Lucroy CF Gomez 1B Smoak LF Schafer/Gindl Rotation of: Lohse Garza Gallardo Peralta Thornburg Moreover, what about Gallardo? Would you do Gallardo and maybe a lesser prospect for Smoak and Ackley?
  14. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/latest-on-nelson-cruz.html If the Mariners complete this deal, Seattle is really shaping up to be an ideal trade partner for the Brewers for 1B. With Cano at 2B, Ackley in LF and with none of Cruz/Morrison/Hart being able to play RF let alone CF, that leaves Cruz/Morrison/Hart/Smoak battling for RF/DH/1B. You have to assume that Cruz immediately becomes the RF, leaving Morrison/Smoak/Hart for 2 positions. Additionally, I think Morales could possibly be back in play soon for the Mariners given the draft pick attached to him. If I am the Mariners right now and I am trying to be a playoff contender, I sign Cruz and Morales, who both could be available on discounted contracts. I move Morrison to LF and put Ackley and Smoak on the block. A middle of the order that looks like this is pretty menacing: 2. Seager 3. Cano 4. Cruz 5. Morales 6. Hart 7. Morrison Ackley & Smoak may become available very shortly if the Mariners play their cards right and the Brewers would be smart to throw their hat into that ring to try and acquire both of them. A Brewer lineup that looks like the following has a little more depth to it than it does today: 1. Segura 2. Ackley/Davis 3. Braun 4. Ramirez 5. Lucroy 6. Gomez 7. Smoak 8. Davis/Ackley
  15. And this is the whole point of why Rickie Weeks will be a member of the 2014 Milwaukee Brewers. The only way he isn't is if he is included as a secondary piece in some type of deal that could make the Brewers better long term at multiple other positions i.e. a Ramirez trade.
  16. Weeks is going to be in Milwaukee in 2014. Scooter, while I like him, is no sure thing. Moreover, if he were to fall flat and Weeks is gone, what are the Brewers options? A stud 2B prospect coming down the pipe? Nope. Bianchi as the everyday 2B? I prefer him in the role he is currently in. Segura moves to 2B? Great, who plays SS? A trade for a 2B? Why do that when you already had Weeks? While you may not like him, Weeks is insurance against Scooter falling flat in a year that the Brewers are very obviously viewing themselves as contenders.
  17. STINKS! Man...do we need to start worrying about a replacement for the road for Bob? The Dodgers have been doing it with Vin Scully for a few years now where he doesn't travel much west of Colorado. They have a very good team of Charley Steiner and Rick Monday though. I like Joe Block as a guy but would really not enjoy him as the full time announcer. I wish we could have Cory Provus back.
  18. I agree on the strikeouts. Nothing infuriates me more than watching a dude with runners in scoring position strike out and I agree that Reynolds will provide us with a ton of that. On the bright side though, strikeouts are better than GIDPs.
  19. Player 1: 3398 PA, 194 HR, 403 BB, 1118 Ks, .232/.329/.485 HR: 1 in every 17.5 ABs BB: 1 in every 8.4 ABs K: 1 in every 3.0 ABs Player 2: 3947 PA, 202 HR, 459 BB, 1276 Ks, .233/.329/.464 HR: 1 in every 19.5 ABs BB: 1 in every 8.5 ABs K: 1 in every 3.0 ABs Player 1: Russell Branyan Player 2: Mark Reynolds For all the love that Russell Branyan gets around here, me included, I find it interesting the level of dislike that Mark Reynolds is getting. Let's be excited guys, Russell the Muscle is back in the form of Mark Reynolds!
  20. Jeff Bianchi, even with his 2013 slash of .237/.272/.292, was still a 0.8 WAR player according to Fangraphs, and a 1.1 WAR player according to Baseball Reference. Baseball Reference had his D alone as 2.0 WAR. Interesting.
  21. I think the thing is with the 1B situation is that trading for Ike or Butler and keeping our MiLB talent are not mutually exclusive. There has to be a deal for a 1B out there that allows for the Brewers to keep our young pitchers like Thornburg & Nelson for post-2015 when Lohse and maybe Gallardo are gone. As I mentioned in other threads, the Brewers have some depth in the OF with Braun, Gomez & Davis/Gindl/Schafer for the next 3 seasons at least. If we can leverage just one of the OF prospects with a SP prospect like Hellweg, I think we can find that 1B. Now if they want to get really creative, the Brewers could include Ramirez in a deal for a 1B, provided they get a young 3B and a 1B in return. A package of Ramirez, Haniger & Hellweg for Butler & Moustakas would do long term wonders for this team and their chances post-2015. Currently, the Brewers lineup is or should be relatively set for the next 3 seasons in RF, CF, SS & C, and hopefully at LF & 2B as well. A trade like this could make 1B & 3B set as well.
  22. I agree with this 100%. Reynolds as the power bench bat, soft end of a platoon with Davis at 1B and emergency backup for Ramirez at 3B (Bianchi should be the backup when Ramirez needs a day) would be my realistic preference for the Brewers 1B in 2014.
  23. SS Segura LF Davis RF Braun 3B Ramirez C Lucroy CF Gomez 1B Reynolds 2B Gennett/Weeks That is a pretty interesting lineup and I like it. Gomez shouldn't be allowed in the #2 spot IMO as he flourished in his role last season. My only concern is Gennett in the #8 spot and I will refer to this as the JJ Hardy problem. As I recall, when JJ came up and was really struggling, a lot of the blame was thrown at him not seeing any pitches in the #8 hole and having to adjust. I worry about Gennett having the same issue. For the most part, I think the positions in the lineup are (or should be) set at #1 Segura, #3 Braun, #4 Ramirez, #5 Lucroy & #6 Gomez. The real managing will come at #2, #7 & #8, where Davis, Gennett & Reynolds come into play. I like Davis or Gennett at #2 and hate Davis & Reynolds at #8, and am worried about Gennett at #8.
  24. That is a complicated contract. I think we all can see why it took from Thursday to Sunday to work out all the details of the contract as I am sure the Brewers and Garza went back and forth on their proposals. Good deal for the Brewers though overall. If Garza is healthy, the deal would be 5 years, $65 million. Let's hope for health and effectiveness.
  25. I would be so disappointed if this were the trade. The Brewers should not be dealing Thornburg or Nelson, as they are the only young pitchers they have currently that I see making an impact on the MLB roster. Now if the deal was Ramirez and two of Roache/Haniger/Coulter for Butler and Moustakas, I could get behind it, as it possibly fills 1B and 3B for the long term, and the Brewers have some younger depth at the OF positions (Gomez, Davis, Gindl, Tyrone Taylor & likely one of Roache/Haniger). In fact, I would very much welcome this deal as Butler-Ramirez is a likely push in 2014 and Moustakas-(pick one of our 1B), is a likely win for the Brewers this season.
