  1. [sarcasm]Obviously, as his new teammates are trying to show him, if Trout was truly a great player he'd pitch his team into the playoffs, not just be a perennial MVP and the most complete center fielder since Willie Mays. That's just not good enough to win, like, you know a Derek Jeter who always did what it took to win the game[/sarcasm]
  2. Not sure what you're saying here. Like, you shouldn't have to actually stay on the base? Within limits, but yeah. You should be able to stay above the base after initial contact, and a fraction of an inch off shouldn't mean you're out. I really dislike treating the base like a deified object. Yep. The spirit of the game is about running between two distances before the ball can beat you to that spot. it's not about whether you can sprint to a spot WELL before the ball gets there and then you have to also make sure that not even an eyelash can ever fit between your shoe or hand and the base while a tag is held on your back or leg. Obviously, there is a point where you can't be completely overslide the base while being tagged, but that Adames play was definitely NOT that case. Just stupid and not about baseball skill.
  3. I was with you on the first part. Then you totally lost me on the second part. There are not 15+ teams that would use Brad Boxberger as their closer/#1 option in the pen. That's a major exaggeration. He's been very solid for us and I'd pretty much leave it at that. It was a little trick of language there, in that half the league would love to have his production thus far as their #1 production...not that they would use him going forward as their #1. It might not be far off though at this point.
  4. Give me Strickland and possibly Cousins and Sanchez (need to see a little more from them) as the number three option in the bullpen. An abundance of riches! I don't disagree. We have a great bullpen that I wouldn't trade for anybody else's in the league, bar none.
  5. Box is our #3 and AT LEAST half the league would love to have his production as their #1, particularly our current opponent and competition for the division championship.
  6. "Here" Just isn't true. Perhaps a poster or two who hate on everybody. Keeps the board interesting and interactive, I guess.
  7. Wong and Cain...hopefully. As for the arms, it's really hard to complain about what we have right now-- but sure, talented add-on bullpen help is always appreciated.
  8. Great, gutty performance from Woody today. Didn't have his strikeout stuff but got the job done.
  9. Yeah...Cincy is a lot better within these threads then they are on paper or in person. Winning the division isn't easy, maybe they are providing a good reality check to fans that this team isn't going to run away with the division, but man do people act like they are some world beaters while forgetting that we have a pretty good squad over here too I think the Reds are slightly better. Our rotation is better but not by much. Their lineup is better but not by much. Our pen and defense are probably better. I'm not fawning over them, but it seems pretty clear to me. I think you mean "Our pen and defense are light years better"
  10. Yeah, and probably partially a function of them winning 5 of the last 6 against the Crew. I think they have a more balanced roster. Is it better? Probably depends on how you feel about Wong and Taylor and Cain. And is Yelich this guy this year? Or something with a bit more SLG than he's shown so far. The Reds bullpen melts down more often than this board...if this fanbase had to follow that it would constantly wonder why it couldn't come up with a decent reliever or two like the Brewers who seem to have no-name relievers come out of their ears and dominate year after year after year...
  11. Anyone who has seen Yelich’s at bats, including Yelich himself, knows that he isn’t close to being elite. The raw numbers that you’re citing don’t capture the strikeouts and weak contact. Maybe he can regain the form he had in early 2018 before he exploded, but he isn’t close to that now. Half right. He does K way too much. He is in the 92nd percentile of hard hit% so weak contact really isn't a problem. And of course Yelich should be better and says he should be better as his potential is the best hitter in the league. That doesn't mean he should be benched for underperforming compared to that lofty potential. Right now he is merely above average.
  12. This isn't true. Yelich is still one of our better offensive performers with his 113OPS+. He's playing at a lower level than expected, but he's been an above average player without a doubt. It just seems like Yelich isn’t very productive because 6 of the regulars in the Reds lineup have a higher OPS than he does. It’s pretty depressing being at the games and seeing the stats on the scoreboard showing that succession of .800 and .900 OPS hitters coming to the plate. Yelich has a .402 OBP. That's second in the National League. Actual value of OPS is a bit mis-weighted toward sluggers, thus that .402 OBP out of his .773 OPS plays even better than his OPS would suggest. He isn't far off from being elite again.
  13. Well. If they have Tyler Black or Connor Norby or Trey Sweeney ranked just as high on their big board as Matt McLain then it makes sense to draft the guy who you like just as much but don't have to pay a lot in order for you to be able to draft a TRULY high upside high schooler in round 4 or 6 or 11 or 12 or whatever who has a high bonus slot number than where we pick him. Thus, that IS actually drafting for upside.... There are hundreds of high schoolers in this draft who have a higher upside than all but a few dozen college players...but they won't necessarily come play for you unless you pay them a bit more. The only way to pay them a bit more might be to do an underslot deal in round 1--PARTICULARLY if you don't feel lie you are missing out on some can't miss type guy. There won't be a can't miss type guy left at 15 with the exception of MAYBE Ty Madden if he falls or your opinion of Hoglund/BednarWicks.
  14. Obviously the Onara was terrible, but (I think) he was actually more consistent than people give him credit for. He was giving the pitchers a couple inches on the 3rd base side of the plate and he took away an inch or two from the bottom of the zone.
  15. What are you basing the "easy choice" off of, out of curiosity. It's a reward for having such a great "season" last year too. He's done it for longer than Freddy.
  16. Nope. Every game they either win or they lose. No middle ground.
  17. Hector Santiago just entered the game for Seattle following his suspension. He promptly grabbed the rosin bag and flung it as far away from the mound as possible. He then got a talkin' to by the umps.
  18. Vive la hitting pitcher!!! Kill the DH!!! For AMERICA!!!!
  19. Advantage: Eric Sogard This is obviously all tongue-in-cheek good fun, but it certainly does illustrate the beauty of baseball. If a world class shot-putter raced Usain Bolt in the 100m or 200m dash he would lose 100% of the time with 0 exceptions (barring injury/gambling involvement). In baseball, no matter how much the difference is in the long term overall probabilities, in every individual circumstance even the worst has a chance to beat the best. If there is another more apt example of the American Spirit exemplified in sport I would like to hear it.
  20. I keep thinking about the complete disaster show Corbin Burnes was for an entire MLB season. 50 IPs of nearly 9 ERA "pitching" in 2019. It will forever give me hope for young pitchers with good stuff and terrible results.
  21. Willie adaMAYS?
  22. I'm done with playoff odds. Give me Championship odds or at least WS odds.
