  1. Why would he not be the starting 3B against righties? He's going to get a lot of ABs. As many as Gyorko, Arcia, Braun and Smoak. I think it pushes Sogard over to SS to split time with Arcia. CC has a lot of options, anyway.
  2. Those splits explain a lot. I assumed Sogard had typical lefty splits (like Holt/Shaw), but I guess not. Holt is needed.
  3. Can we trade Sogard now? I like Holt better, although Sogard can play SS. It seems redundant, unless Urias is out for a significant time.
  4. There is going to be a lot of changes in the next CBA. Hopefully there are no work stoppages. The arbitration system is pretty stupid. There has to be a more flexible, market driven approach that makes sense. Something along the lines of restricted FA for a player after 3 years of MLB service time, so that a player can leave his original ballclub and sign a 1 or 2 year contract elsewhere but the original team gets a chance to match that contract and retain his services.
  5. Bad Brad seems to be back after kind of slumping and/or being hurt for much of the year. Amazing how healthy a guy looks when he goes 8/11 behind the arc. It's nice to see Davison and Trice both have great games, especially on an off day for Pritzl. There are only 6 games left in the season, but I still can't figure this team out. No stars and no real identity. Just kind of a ho-hum solid basketball team without any glaring weaknesses nor any overwhelming strengths. They have the capability to really light it up from outside, but it seems like that's every team these days.
  6. It would bother me if the only advantage a 100 win 2 seed division winner has over an 80 win 7 seed WC is the homesite in a best of 3 series and the privilege of choosing their opponent. Give them a game advantage going into the series too and I'm sold. The 4 seed WC and the 5 seed WC can have a true best of 3 series but the two division winners just have to win 1 out of 2.
  7. Going into last year Peralta and Burnes were question marks with high upside. The optimism around those two guys was 180 degrees different than the feeling those guys give you coming into this year. We'll see what happens. It's going to be fun to see how it all shakes out this Spring.
  8. I wish they had signed one more guy too but overall this one kind of confuses me. The rotation is in a much better spot than it was this time last year. There is more depth and the players are more proven. Going into the season with Burnes, Woodruff and Peralta was scary as heck as not one of them had seen success as a starter yet. I don't understand why so many were so high on the rotation last year yet so low this year. This is basically the same quality rotation that we have seen from the team each of the past 3 or 4 seasons only with more depth this year. Last year we had depth and high upside young guys. Chase Anderson wasn't even in the rotation to start the year. I don't know who the 6th starter would be this year, but whoever it is is a far bigger question mark than Chase. Granted, I don't think the actual talent is thinner this year, and it might even be a bit better, but Davies, Anderson and Chacin reliably ate up a lot of innings for us the last few years and had a more proven major league starters resume than the guys that we have now.
  9. I'm sure that Alando Tucker and Dean Oliver and Lamont Paris and Howard Moore and Rob Jeter and etc. etc. etc. can vouch for the "racism" within the UW program. I know I shouldn't take the bait, but the whole situation is so obviously ridiculous and concocted by the enemies of the UW program that it's frustrating and sad.
  10. This is all true and correct...as evidenced by the NBA and NHL where the regular season is mostly exhibition. That problem can be amended with a better playoff format though, with huge incentives for getting higher seeds. Giving more teams hope and having more meaningful games in September is a good thing, as long as those teams at the top are still playing to win a pennant and get some sort of advantageous seed in the playoffs.
  11. I love this idea. There would still be a HUGE advantage to being the #1 seed, getting to reset your entire pitching staff before starting the division series at your home stadium the next weekend. There would also be a huge advantage to being the 2-4 seed, getting to both pick your opponent and get a 3 game playoff series at home. 5-7 seeds keep the regular season relevant for a few more teams through September. I'd even take it a step further though, and instead of having a 3 game series for the Wild Card Round, I'd force the road WC teams to win back-to-back games on the road to advance to the division round. If the home team wins either game, then they advance. That keeps the regular season relevant and keeps the timeframe more manageable so that the division series would start on the same date they have in the past.
  12. The optimism is admirable, but last years team was looking pretty good coming into the year. A healthy Knebel, a good Jeffress, Travis Shaw (and to a lesser extent Aguilar), Cain and Braun being a year younger, Moustakas, Grandal...Corbin Burnes looking like he was going to step into becoming a quality starter, Chacin coming off a career year and looking to repeat...Anderson and Davies as reliable depth pieces. A lot of things went wrong last year and they still made the playoffs. This years team is a bunch of spare parts cobbled around a few all stars and a couple of youngsters. If everything goes right they'll make the playoffs...if things go like they did last year with this roster they'll win 70 games.
  13. But my point was that if they hadn't dropped two 'winnable' games, they'd be tied for first right now with that same next 9 games. For all the crap they've dealt with this year, they're like 3 bounces away from being 15-7 or 16-6. Yeah. The lack of Potter probably cost them 1-3 seed lines. They had Potter during the pair of tough luck losses (and the good luck win(s) vs. Maryland (and to a lesser extent MSU)). Realistically, they are a competitive team that can beat anybody on any given night but they aren't good enough to win the title. A classic baseline Wisconsin team that should be a "floor" type of year for Wisconsin, which says quite a bit for the program. Add in an AA player or even a surefire 1st team All-B1G type guy and it turns into a real B1G title/Final 4 contender. That said, CBB in general is so down this year that you never know.
  14. Is an "invitation" to big league camp actually meaningful or merely administrative? Do guys have to be officially invited before they can appear in big league spring training games? Is there a difference in use of facilities? Better perks and higher per diem pay?
  15. It's mostly window dressing at this point. They probably weren't going to truly contend for a B1G title this year either way (although their next 9 games are all pretty winnable), so then it's basically a difference in seeding, which I cared about 15 years ago, but when you make the tourney every year the less that matters and the more that matchups and being "hot" at the right time matter. Last year they were a 5 seed and an underdog in the first game. 3 years ago they got jobbed by the committee with an 8 seed and ended up beating #1 seed defending Champs Villanova anyway (who was coaching then?) in the 2nd round. Just get in and be playing well at the right time and you can make a run.
  16. I was thinking this too watching how dominant they were in the first half. Maybe he was more of a distraction to the team and causing some issues within the clubhouse. It’ll be interesting to see how they play the next couple weeks. Could be pretty telling. They played a lot better at Iowa without him that at Purdue with him, and Iowa arguably is a better team than Purdue. King is an excellent 1 on 1 scorer. And that's about it. That's a very visible thing for casual fans to lock into though and thus proclaim him as one of the best players on the team. In reality, he isn't as good as Pritzl and Wahl at every other facet of the game (King might be a slightly better 3 point shooter than Wahl). As long as nobody gets hurt the team isn't in any worse shape this year and a very good case could be made for them actually being better without him THIS YEAR. The guy obviously has a ton of potential though, so it hurts more for the future than anything else. Pritzl will be gone next year, and King would have another year to improve his ballhandling, passing, 3 pt shooting, defense, decision making, spacing, etc. As far as people trying to blame Gard for this, it is completely ridiculous. Transferring is incredibly commonplace throughout all of college basketball. Gard is basically the perfect Wisconsin coach, and he's had success despite terrible circumstances. The next 2 recruiting classes secured his job for another 3 years. When they make the tourney all 3 of those years it will likely be secure for as long as he wants it after that.
  17. I think the NFL would be more interesting if they went back to the old college football rules from the 50s. Gotta play 2 ways with maybe an exception here or there.
  18. I'm just going to post this link from the fangraphs article here for future reference: http://www.tangotiger.net/re24.html I've previously asked and looked for this data, and always only found data from 1998-2003.
  19. The hook is A LOT slower for a veteran with a guaranteed contract than it is for a guy who can be shuttled to SA. I don't want a bullpen full of low upside veteran guys we are just waiting to cut...we might as well give a shot to Luke Barker or Rassmussen or Devin Williams. Then when they are shaky we can shuttle them down. When Phelps is shaky we have to wait it out for another 3 weeks before we are sure he is a complete flop before we cut him AND eat the contract. That's a lot of "lose" compared to just shuttling guys back and forth to SA.
  20. That's very fair and makes a lot of sense. Particularly for a guy like Yardley. MM and RR have value right now though simply because they are the only IF depth we have. If they are waived, they will need to be replaced by a similar player (or position, anyway).
  21. Signing a veteran w/o options reduces choices though. I'm just not confident enough in bullpen guys, even veteran non-nobodies with low-ish ceilings like Phelps and Strop, to commit a contract to them that we'd either have to eat if he stinks or keep throwing him out there hoping that he improves. A lot of this depends on Knebel, Wahl, Black and Peralta. I'm kind of counting on those guys to be in our pen, and that might not be the case. If those guys are not looking like good options then we might need to sign another MLB quality bullpen arm.
  22. This is a great thread. Lots of knowledgeable posters weighing in with thoughtful posts. When the 40 man roster is full, you have a hard time adding more cheap veteran options because that could push another guy out of the organization completely. That's fine if that guy is out of options and doesn't have a great future (Deolis Guerra). However, they must have picked up guys like RR, Mathias, Yardley and Feyereisen for a reason (they liked them and they had options). After jettisoning Guerra I'd imagine that Taylor Williams is the next to go, and that wouldn't hurt too bad. Tyrone Taylor's spot is probably in jeopardy as well. I think Phelps is the last add before Spring training, then there could be some more moves in the last week of March after seeing more of these guys up close and personal this Spring. I like what Stearns did this offseason, but I don't really think they are true contenders this year. It looks like a .500 team with a lot of upside and question marks. Should be fun!
  23. Since Williams, Wahl and Feyereisen can be optioned they aren't really in the same category as Strop and Black. In order to maintain flexibility you want as many guys with options as you can get. I wouldn't want Strop AND Phelps. I think we are done adding these mediocre veteran type guys. Either we get a clear upgrade(s) or we add NRIs or split contract type guys.
  24. Only for the starting pitcher! Only for the starting pitcher! Only for the starting pitcher! Or perhaps make the DH "optional" such that every series the home team gets to decide to use the DH or not. That would be the ultimate in flexibility. It would then be a big advantage to have an Ohtani or to a lesser extent Woodruff or Greinke or Bumgarner. Like everybody else between 35 and 60 years old here, I grew up watching the Brewers in the AL. At that time I thought the NL was weird and backwards for not using the DH. I grew to love the NL style of ball after the switch. It's the way the game was meant to be played.
  25. I think it makes perfect sense for borderline guys to wait 10 years or 3 years or whatever. Voters can only vote for 10 guys so maybe they filled filled up their ballots in previous years with guys who were getting close to being dropped off the ballot. By the time Walker (from Canada AND played in Canada and in flyover country AND an expansion franchise with no historical fanbase) was getting a few years from being dropped off the ballot, people actually started to look at what he accomplished in his career. For the first 5 years people just read the "name" Larry Walker...which isn't a name the media ever hyped...ever. It doesn't sound like "Derek Jeter" or even like he would have played for a team that Derek Jeter played for. He sounds like an accountant or perhaps an apprentice to a Texas Ranger, who he didn't even play for. Once people actually looked at his case for the HOF they realized they had to vote for him before he was dropped off the ballot. Simple as that.
