  1. Honestly they did NOT have 'overwhelming' talent last year. Lucroy was average, Betancourt and McGehee were AWFUL, Weeks got hurt, Morgan had a good BA, but the offense was lacking from CF as well. The bullpen other than Axford (who was a question mark prior to the season) wasn't all that spectacular pre K-Rod. Post K-Rod RR had to deal with the 'who's the closer' issue, and he handled that well. The rotation on paper was borderline amazing, I will give you that. But Gallardo struggled to start the year, Greinke was hurt then struggled for the rest of the first half, Marcum had his issues in the end, Wolf was good, and Narveson was what he is, average. He got hurt as well. My point is while it was a good team, nothing was guaranteed for them, Boston level talent or even Phillies level talent last year, and as you could see with Boston, there's no awards for pre-season talent level.
  2. http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120324&content_id=27572238&notebook_id=27574864&vkey=notebook_mil&c_id=mil The other side of it from Melvin. Good player, bad attitude.
  3. Thanks for posting that nate, was very interested to see the actual terms. Losing picks for over-slotting is a rough penalty but I guess it had to be done. I'm curious to see how teams will approach it.
  4. I thought he had the best quote of the spring when they asked how he lost the weight. "Uh...just ate better...and worked out more...everything like that..." That made me burst out laughing, I mean...no crap that's how you scientifically lose weight Mat, I think they were asking what you did differently from the years prior.
  5. Kind of a side-note and also kind of related but isn't it interesting that the last 5+ years it seems like our starting lineup is exclusively RHH's and our bench/backups are almost exclusively LHH's. Funny and annoying at the same time. Just seems like we can't produce starting level LHH's, or bench-level RHH's. As far as the OF situation, I really think a guy like Schafer deserves a chance. No offense to T-Plush, but I would rather see Schafer take your spot in the platoon, with Aoki playing as well.
  6. I would probably guess that Kintzler has a good chance of making the roster if he proves healthy. He has late-inning type stuff.
  7. Do we have any idea the types of fines/repercussions that will take place? It seems to me if the fine is low and/or you only lose a lower round draft pick, then teams will just over-slot anyways. But if the fine's are high then that might make things unfair in general.
  8. I personally think Morgan or Aoki fit better as an everyday leadoff hitter. As far as against LHP, I think it could just by committee or move Hart/Weeks up for those games. I also don't think it would be the end of the world for Gomez to leadoff in 20+ games, even though offensively he's obviously a liability. His speed can still make things happen the once or twice a game he would get on.
  9. For literally his first game as a Brewers broadcaster, I think we can reserve judgement.
  10. What I don't understand is there's people who have this surgery and are back playing in 2 weeks or less. Why does Hart need a whole month of just recovery time? I suppose if it's more serious then they're letting on than it would make some sense, but if it's just a slight tear and an arthroscopic procedure it shouldn't be a month IMO.
  11. Think about when the Brewers got Morgan. Right before ST ended. If a trade is going to happen, it's going to happen towards the end of ST once they see how Aoki/Morgan are performing. So the speculation of a trade happening right now seems foolish, I mean they really haven't even seen the guys hit yet this year so why make a trade when you don't know. Injuries could happen too, and if you already traded a guy then what do you do.
  12. I mentioned this on the other topic regarding this, but I have to believe they will be using WMLW for either the Brewers or Bucks during those conflicting games. The Bucks may be terrible but you can't cut their broadcasts just because of their record. They need money too.
  13. I'm very curious about the Bucks conflicts as well. Just because the Bucks are terrible doesn't mean they can cancel the broadcasting of their games. I feel like WMLW is going to have to be involved in some way during April
  14. Well Latin America and the Dominican Republic are two very different things in terms of size. I was specifically referring the Dominican.
  15. Hart has stated he's fine 1-5, he just hated batting behind Prince, that's why he didn't want to bat 5th. So I don't think Hart has to bat leadoff, and as far as the 'if it aint broke' mantra, this is a new season and a new team really. Maybe start out with Corey leading off, but don't be handcuffed by it because it worked in the past.
  16. I've always liked Gamel, and although he's had some missteps I still think he has plenty of talent. Honestly what still kind of bugs me to this day is he was 23 and a big-league ready bat in 2009, but struggled when he was getting PT so they went with McGehee. Now Mat is 26 and 3 good years of his career are gone just for the stop-gap that was Casey McGehee. Nothing against Casey, he played well enough to earn it in 2009, but now look where we're at. Mat could have been truly coming into his own at the MLB level if given the PT (or at least platooning McGehee) the last 3 years. Instead of a top 100 prospect we now have comparisons to Lyle Overbay. It's kind of a short straw situation for Mat. I just hope my feelings are right and he will be a productive player in the majors, just like he has been for many years in the minors.
  17. Combined, maybe, but Sheets was the first guy to get a 30M deal from the team and that was 2005. After that came Suppan, and now Braun & Gallardo. Hall's deal came close, but that was only 4/24. And Wolf...and now Aramis Ramirez, and Corey Hart. Though I wouldn't call them flops, just poining out additional 30 million dollar contracts. Amazing that I think Hall's deal was the biggest in Brewers history(or it was Sheets) and now we've discussed deals 3-4 times as large, and will probably(or possibly) have two 100 million dollar players on our payroll in Braun and Greinke(Zack hopefully for a little less, but close if we want to sign him). Yes, and Suppan obviously was a terrible signing. But you know the difference? Cespedes is a PROSPECT. Not one MLB or even MiLB AB. Suppan and the others were established MLB players. Plus he's 26, as others mentioned. It's just too risky for a small market team like the Brewers, especially when their payroll is inflated at the moment.
  18. Well Roger Clemen's didn't touch 90 until college. So it's an inexact science when it comes to 'stuff'. And also, you see a lot of '17-19' year olds from the Dominican throwing 90+. That whole area is just shady IMO. These guys almost never pan out to anything, and as we're seeing more and more lately, they're getting exposed for fake ages, fake names, etc.
  19. I realize I could read up on this a little more and get the answer, but I'll just ask here. I thought the new draft system gave you a certain limit on what you can spend in the draft and if you go over that limit, that's when restrictions start applying. Am I wrong about that? IE: Couldn't you over slot a couple players so long as you stayed below the threshold?
  20. Yeah, it's funnier to make fun of the Astros. Houston Hurricanes...well that one is actually kind of cool. Houston Tumbleweeds
  21. It's good to see Bradley get some hype in this topic. I really like the kid and think he's going to take off this year. May even earn a September call-up (even if the MLB club is in the playoff hunt)
  22. While it would be hard for McGehee's OPS not to be better this year, I don't think he'll be nearly as good as Ramirez will be, even if ARam declines a bit. First of all, McGehee just looked lost at the plate last year, and I don't think that's as easy to fix as you might think (see Bill Hall). Secondly (and perhaps more importantly) he's going to play at PNC, which is largely regarded as a "big" ballpark, often pitcher friendly.
  23. The Houston Lone Stars or just Stars wouldn't be that bad. It fits in with all of Texas' themes over the years. I kind of agree with everyone else though, keep the name and if anything just change the Uni's. The Red/Black thing was cool like 10 years ago.
  24. One of his biggest fans yet don't know his name? Edit: Not trying to be a jerk by the way, just poking a little fun.
  25. Actually he put up the best numbers in the 2 hole a couple years ago. Hart, that is. Also with Fielder gone, I'd prefer more of a prototypical leadoff guy just so you have Hart/Weeks power in a place to drive people in.
