  1. Brewers tough luck continues tonight, JBJ’s expected BA on that hit (EV/launch angle) was .860.
  2. I’ve been a little surprised he hasn’t been better against LHP since coming to Milwaukee. He had mashed LHP at the major league level (albeit in a small sample) prior to coming to the Brewers.
  3. Freddy having a little bit of trouble with his command early tonight. Gets through the 1st inning on 23 pitches, but no damage done.
  4. A key tonight might be how Freddy Peralta is able to handle Paul Goldschmidt. Previously Freddy has faced him 6 times, and Goldy is 4-for-5 with 2 home runs and a walk in those plate appearances.

  6. Per Adam McCalvy: The Brewers are 33-20 (.623) all-time on Mother's Day, best in MLB. Would be nice to further improve the left column on that all-time record today. Brewers improve to 34-20 (.630 winning percentage) all-time on Mother’s Day.
  7. For sure, Rasmussen is a high strikeout guy as well but obviously a little more hittable. I guess if he develops into a guy you can truly trust in high leverage positions than you’re feeling a lot better about those type of extra inning situations going forward.
  8. No, I don’t take it as snark. To that point you’re right that I don’t have the probability tables sitting in front of me, but it would be a fascinating analysis to see someone produce. Still, I’m fairly confident a high strikeout and extremely low WHIP pitcher like Hader is much more valuable in a scenario where a runner starts on 2B with no outs versus an inning earlier when no runner starts on base. Anyway, I am glad they pulled it out, a much needed win. Rasmussen did look good as well, so that’s a huge positive.
  9. The problem is that’s more so classic coach-speak than rooted in any actual probability based reasoning. That’s fine if we want to harken back to the days of “go with your gut” coaching, but the truth is the odds were pretty good Rasmussen wouldn’t have given up a run in the 9th inning with no one beginning the inning on base, and now Hader would have a chance to win you the game in the 10th by stranding the runner. The odds of winning would’ve increased significantly in that scenario. Even if Rasmussen blew the game then at least you saved an inning on Hader’s arm. ...Now lets hope Rasmussen just strikes everyone out anyway.
  10. It appears the Brewers are lining Hader up to pitch the 9th in tie game instead of the 10th if they go to extra innings. This will never not be frustrating to me as long as the extra runner rule is in place. Hader should be saved for a situation where he provides a massive advantage to your team due to the new rule. For those that say “you’ve got to get there first”, I think the problem with that argument is the odds of any average reliever pitching a scoreless inning in the 9th is much higher than any average reliever stranding a runner on 2B with no outs in the 10th.
  11. Brinson playing well against the Brewers, and quite literally only the Brewers, is getting old. Coming into today Brinson had a career .905 OPS against the Brewers (obviously even higher after today). He doesn’t have a .900+ OPS against any other team, and the only other one relatively close is the Dbacks (.886 OPS against). He’s been pretty much terrible against everyone else.

  13. On paper the starting pitching matchup doesn’t look great for the Brewers, but hopefully they have a little Mother’s Day magic in them. Today is the 17th straight game without a much needed day off. Starting tomorrow the Brewers have 3 off-days over the next 11 calendar days. Hopefully by the end of that stretch they’ll look a little healthier.

  16. Mitch Haniger is another example of a toolsy outfielder the Brewers sold low on, in his case during his age-23 season for Gerardo Parra. Haniger’s breakout was somewhat due to a swing change, and I’m not saying Lutz will replicate that trajectory, but it’s hard to give up on the talent at this point especially considering his trade value probably isn’t viewed as overly high at the moment.
  17. Ummmm??? When was Carlos Rodon a Brewer?? It doesn’t exactly qualify as being a former Brewer, but Rodon was drafted by the Brewers out of high school. One story that always stands out for me happened during Rodon’s junior year at NC State in 2014 when he was in contention to go 1:1 in the upcoming draft (ultimately went 3rd overall). Brewers GM Doug Melvin was asked about Rodon in an interview and it was pretty clear he had no idea who Rodon even was or why he was being asked about him. I know GMs don’t typically have much to do with the draft, so I guess it shouldn’t have really been that surprising, but I found it a little funny that here’s a player you seemingly tried to sign three years earlier after drafting, and now he’s considered potentially the best amateur arm in the upcoming draft and his name doesn’t ring a bell for your GM.
  18. Already the 4th no hitter this year in MLB. So much for more balls in play. It is sort of incredible Cleveland has been no hit twice in the past three weeks or so, and both against LHPs (Rodón and Miley).
  19. Agree with this. Reports were the Padres had been fawning over Grisham since he was in high school. At the time it looked like the Brewers were getting the best player in the trade. I wasn’t trying to induce more lamenting about the trade, just mentioning that for now it isn’t terrible production for Urias. Yes, obviously I hope he continues to improve and would love for him to consistently produce an .800 or greater OPS.
  20. In a vacuum, I'd be content with that production from the shortstop position. In context of our activities the last 18 months, if that is what we get going forward, it essentially means not only did we did not upgrade from Arcia at all at that position, but we paid a very heavy price for that lateral move. That would be an offensive upgrade over what Orlando Arcia provided. Arcia has a career .294 OBP and .364 SLG. That includes what was by far his best full season back in 2017.
