  1. Jose Altuve was signed for $15k, Acuna for $100k. There are a bunch of others examples of this too. Not only do these guys sign at 16, but the deals are often agreed even earlier than that. So I agree that spreading it around a bit, and investing a ton into the player development side in the DR complex, is a good way to go. Which is not to say it's always the way to go, but using the whole pool on two $3m guys is a very risky maneouver. A lot the deals are agreed to a year in advance or more, so some of these prospects are as young as 14 when deals start coming together. That is also one of the primary reasons it’s so much harder to find pitching among this young age range. It’s really tough to project how a 15 year old is going to project to develop as a pitcher. Regarding smaller signings becoming top prospects, the Brewers Luis Urias was signed by the Padres for $100k (only $25k of which went to Urias because he was in the Mexican League and his team took $75k of the Padres money). Some other notable players in recent years with smaller signing bonuses include Ozzie Albies signed for $350k, Victor Robles for $225k, Dinelson Lamet $100k, Sixto Sanchez $35k, Luis Patiño $130k, Keibert Ruiz $140k. The list goes on and on, but those are some that stood out. Hedbert Perez is a good example of a player that received a somewhat smaller bonus at $700k (it wasn’t the Brewers biggest bonus in 2019), but almost immediately experienced helium in his prospect status after signing. There is certainly hope the Perez signing ends up looking very good for the Brewers over the coming years.
  2. One-year for $8 million.
  3. Jeff Passan saying the deal isn't considered done... There is not an agreement in place between outfielder Michael Brantley and the Toronto Blue Jays, according to a source. The Blue Jays are among the teams still in on Brantley, and a deal may eventually get done, but it is not finished.
  4. From Jeff Passan... Now that Michael Brantley is headed to Toronto on a three-year deal, as @thehazelmae said, look at this lineup: Springer 8 Biggio 4 Bichette 6 Brantley DH Hernandez 9 Guerrero 5 Gurriel 7 Tellez 3 Jansen/Kirk 2 That is a run-scoring machine.
  5. Per Ken Rosenthal... Source confirms: Free-agent Michael Brantley in agreement with Blue Jays on a three-year contract, pending physical. First: @thehazelmae. Edit: Jeff Passan is now reporting there is not yet an agreement in place between Brantley and the Blue Jays.
  6. Andrew Vaughn turns 23 in April and is ranked as a top 15-30 prospect in baseball (#21 in Baseball America’s Top 100 released earlier this week). He would’ve most likely started 2020 at Double-A had there been an MiLB season. He could be in the majors as soon as this coming season, but should certainly be there no later than 2022 (next season).
  7. From Mark Feinsand regarding the Mets offer... Per source, the Mets’ top offer to George Springer came in around six years, $120-125 million. The Blue Jays took it to the next level and get their man at six years, $150 million. Huge acquisition for Toronto.
  8. Created a separate thread for the Springer signing now that it appears official and is obviously one of the bigger signings of the off-season.
  9. Per Ken Rosenthal it’s done... Source confirms: Blue Jays in agreement with free-agent outfielder George Springer. Per Jon Heyman, six years, $150M. Pending physical.
  10. Looks like the Blue Jays are likely to also sign George Springer. Per Jon Morosi... Sources: Blue Jays now are the frontrunners to sign George Springer. @_bkuh_ and @RadioVendetta each have reported tonight that the Jays and Springer have a deal in place pending a physical exam. Morosi added... The Blue Jays gained momentum in their pursuit of George Springer earlier today, as Jon Heyman reported, and one source indicated to me tonight that Springer could finalize his plans in the next 24 hours.
  11. The Twitter “rumblings” about the White Sox being interested in Brewers’ starting pitchers goes as far back as last season’s trade deadline. Seems like it has stirred back up the past couple of weeks, but there hasn’t been anything reported from any actual member of the media. The rumors seem vague at best. Regarding the Reddit post, here is the Reddit Link so you can decide for yourself. Some of the Reddit commenters mention that same poster incorrectly claimed to have a scoop on an NFL trade last year.
  12. I would be curious to know if anyone in the Cubs front office was made aware of this behavior in the weeks after it occurred. Sounds like these Porter messages have been known about in certain circles for a few years.
  13. Update from Mets owner Steven Cohen: We have terminated Jared Porter this morning. In my initial press conference I spoke about the importance of integrity and I meant it. There should be zero tolerance for this type of behavior.
  14. The Mets have issued the following statement:
  15. So the Mets could be in the market (again) for a new GM fairly soon. Yikes... NY Mets GM acknowledges sending unsolicited, explicit images while working for Cubs Via Jeff Passan: New York Mets general manager Jared Porter sent explicit photos, including a naked picture of a penis, to a foreign female reporter in 2016 after she had ignored dozens of other messages from him for weeks.
  16. I guess some of it depends on what you think of Joe Musgrove. I consider him to be a better than league average starter, not a back of the rotation piece, so I am slightly underwhelmed for the Pirates. That being said, I would be excited to have Hudson Head if I was a Pittsburgh fan.
  17. Update on the Pirates return from Ken Rosenthal: Pirates’ haul will be Hudson Head, David Bednar, Omar Cruz and Drake Fellows from Padres and Endy Rodriguez from Mets. I really like Hudson Head, but overall the deal seems underwhelming for the Pirates despite the quantity of players they are receiving in return.
  18. According to Dennis Lin... Full return for Joe Musgrove, per sources: Joey Lucchesi, Hudson Head, David Bednar, Omar Cruz, Drake Fellows. UPDATE: Apparently it’s a 3-team deal and LHP Joey Lucchesi is headed to the Mets.
  19. Pirates are reportedly trading starting pitcher Joe Musgrove to the Padres. Musgrove just turned 28 in December and is from San Diego. The Pirates will be receiving multiple prospects in return including outfielder Hudson Head according to Jeff Passan. Pirates are receiving 5 prospects total in return also including Omar Cruz.
  20. Got it, that’s disappointing because I really like THE BAT (and even more so THE BAT X).
  21. For whatever it’s worth, according to the regular season DVOA ratings the Packers had the 25th ranked special teams and the Buccaneers had the 26th ranked special teams.
  22. Yes, you’re correct (as well as THE BAT). I edited my post to reflect that it isn’t just using ZiPS projections.
  23. Link to the Projected Team WAR by Position using FanGraphs Depth Charts (projections are a combination of ZiPS, Steamer, THE BAT). These were adjusted from previous data using the current Depth Charts playing time projections for each team. According to this there is still 108.5 projected WAR among free agents. The Brewers currently have the 16th highest projection in all of baseball, but lead the NL Central (Cardinals are next closest, but 3.4 projected WAR behind the Brewers).
  24. A 14-3 record and hosting the NFC Championship game just like I predicted all along. I should probably stick to baseball predictions going forward.
  25. Regarding Pam Oliver, it isn’t the first time she’s had a similar issue. She has previously shared publicly a struggle in dealing with frequent debilitating migraine headaches since she was 25 years old (link), so I wouldn’t be surprised if that had something to do with it today.
