  1. This is a total dart throw, but one thing I’m curious about is whether maybe the Brewers value the fact that Jace Peterson sees a lot of pitches in his at bats? He is currently seeing an average of 4.69 pitches per plate appearance. Among players with 50+ plate appearances only Mitch Garver has a higher Pit/PA at 4.70. Daniel Vogelbach is also near the very top in the league with 4.52 Pit/PA. Among players with a 100+ plate appearances that is tied for second best in baseball (behind only Yoshi Tsutsugo and tied with Shogo Akiyama). Again, I don’t know if there is anything actually to it but I wonder if they are valuing players that work counts in these games down the stretch. It would make some sense against a team like the Reds where you want to try an get to their middle inning relievers. All of that being said, Hiura was actually not bad in this category (which is partially inflated because he was swinging and missing at so many pitches).
  2. For at least this next few minutes the Brewers, Phillies, and Giants are all currently tied for the 8th playoff spot! Since the Phillies are about to start game two of their double header, and the Giants and Brewers also obviously play this evening it’s all subject to change again soon.
  3. Per reporting from Jeff Passan, sources believe the 2021 MLB Draft Order will be based solely on 2020 records (reverse order standings of 2020 regular season games). Here’s an excerpt from his ESPN.com article... While MLB has yet to announce whether teams' 2020 records will determine draft order, a source familiar with the league's thinking said that the clause written into MLB's March agreement with the players' association that gave the league the right to determine draft order was a contingency in case the season was canceled well before records were indicative of much. Even though 60 games doesn't give the full picture of who's really good and who isn't, the source said it's highly likely that the draft order will be determined by this year's record.
  4. If you are interested in either the Cardinals possible scenarios (including the tentative double header in Detroit on Monday) or just the overall playoff picture and tiebreaker scenarios, these two articles have you covered... Goold: What's the deal with the doubleheader in Detroit? What if Cardinals, Reds, Brewers tie? (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) Passan: Inside a final week like MLB has never seen before (ESPN.com)
  5. I hope they’re destined to either win 4 or more of their last 7 games, or else lose them all.
  6. Yeah, and Keston even in a very small sample at least has a few hits off of Gray. They (Counsell) must’ve really soured on Urias, because they didn’t use him versus a LHP last night when they needed a base hit (ran Taylor up there instead in Narvaez’s spot), and have Sogard at the third and Peterson at second tonight with a ground ball pitcher despite the fact Urias is probably the better overall defender at either position.
  7. I actually agree with you in theory (I know, shocker), but I don't think it's gonna happen. For some reason, this doesn't seem to be the same Craig Counsell who made so many "outside the box" pitching adjustments in 2018. Not sure if you’re both advocating for Burnes to start on short rest, or a bullpen game? I think having the double header looming may decrease the chance they’ll want to overuse the bullpen on Wednesday and Thursday. Burnes going 7 innings on Thursday would set them up the best going into the Friday double header. That being said, if they lose tonight then tomorrow becomes pretty close to a win at all costs scenario (which I think was the original point).
  8. Since a good start against the Brewers on August 27, Sonny Gray made two starts (versus the Cardinals and Cubs) and then went on the IL with a reported back injury. In those two starts Gray had combined results of: 4.0 IP (122 total pitches), 11 H, 11 ER, 6 BB, 5 K The big question heading into tonight is whether Gray will bounce back or continues to struggle.
  9. The Reds beat the Brewers tonight, but the good news is... Cardinals lose. Phillies lose. Marlins lose. Mets lose. Giants are currently down 4-0 to the Rockies in the 4th inning. Edit: Giants lose.
  10. The problem is even given the benefit of hindsight, what moves should they have made this past offseason that were going to make a significant impact on the future? I think they viewed the Urias/Lauer trade as a move for the future, but it doesn’t seem like there were a lot of clear opportunities to add future value in low risk acquisitions. I didn’t even like the offseason, but when I try to draw up a better alternative it proves difficult. I would’ve loved for them to have signed Rendon, but that amount of financial commitment and risk wasn’t likely something they ever seriously considered.
  11. And the Phillies lost. The Marlins are losing. Overall a lot of scores trending the right direction elsewhere. [sarcasm]Maybe everyone just realized they and their families have to quarantine in a hotel and playoff bubble if they advance.[/sarcasm]
  12. Sky is falling! This past offseason was designed in a way to avoid setting themselves back for the future. They can simply discard a majority of the players they brought in this past offseason. They didn’t make any move that is going to sink them long-term, unless you think Yelich is going to fall off a cliff (which I’m betting against).
  13. A mini rally, but Counsell now waiving the Sogard.
  14. It doesn't really seem to help. The pitches have so much movement that you will still swing and miss a ton..and when you do make contact the defense is more likely to make a play. The exit velocity vs. hit probability relationship is so strong that under most situations you have to hit the ball hard. And when you do hit the ball hard, it jacks up your OPS which is the only number anyone is really looking at. It's interesting to watch Vogelbach hit because he has a very compact swing and is pretty good at making contact. But even he ended up on the scrap heap after a relatively short period of struggling. Maybe in the long run we'll see more contact hitters work their way up through the minors, but I suspect MLB will make hitter-friendly rule changes before that happens. One reason I’m irrationally excited for Hedbert Perez (yes, just 17 years old) is he has a very compact, powerful swing. If he develops like you’d project a kid with MLB lineage then I think he could be a very special hitter.
  15. That straight pitch right down the middle to Hiura is one he absolutely has to be able to crush. I hope he comes back following the offseason making more contact on those pitches.
  16. Call me crazy, but I think they’re going to win the next two in Cincinnati.
  17. I think tonight was their toughest pitching matchup on paper (for the offense). Castillo has been otherworldly the last couple of weeks. Gray is dealing with some back issues, although I have no idea about the severity. I think they can at least make him labor and knock him out of the game in 6 or less innings. Bauer is on a day short of full rest, and even though he’s confident I wouldn’t be shocked if it backfires. Also, between yesterday (Sims for 2.1 IP) and tonight (Garrett, Iglesias) the Reds have already leaned on their best relievers the past two days.
  18. Yeah, some disappointing at bats from him tonight.
  19. I'm having trouble finding stats, but I recall seeing stats shown on TV broadcasts that among starting pitchers he's in the top five. He has run his fastball up over 99 mph on occasion in just about every start he’s had this year, that’s got to be near the top of the max velocity leaderboard for starters.
  20. Brewers have been living a bit on the edge all night, finally burned them.
  21. Narvaez has to come up with that foul tip for strike three.
  22. I’ve been trying to figure out the physics of how that type of swing could even produce a success result. Also, even if it had power potential the room for error on making contact for that sort of swing is tiny.
