  1. I think the 2011 trade deadline would beg to differ. With the best team assembled during the Melvin era they neglected to make any substantial moves at the deadline and decided to roll with Yuni B at shortstop.
  2. Game thread for the World Series games.
  3. Hi excite. Sorry couldn't resist it.
  4. Joey Wiemer’s strikeout rate in 2021 (combined across both levels he played) was 22.2%. If you add in his plate appearances in the Arizona Fall League then his strike out rate for all of 2021 drops to 21.7%. It would be great if he could keep it below 25% as he advances levels. In order to do the amount of damage he’s capable of there is likely going to have to be some give-and-take with his strikeout rate.
  5. One specific position the Rays might be looking to deal from is catcher where they have Mike Zunino, Francisco Mejia, René Pinto, Blake Hunt, and may need to add Proctor Ford to their 40-man roster in order to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. On the flip side the Brewers entered last season with a 40-man roster filled with catchers (I believe 6 at one point), but now with Piña being a free agent are down to just 3 catchers (Narvaez, Maile, and Feliciano). I wonder if the Brewers will trust Feliciano as their 3rd catcher (and Maile as their 2nd catcher for that matter), or if they’ll look to add catching depth behind Narvaez. I sort of assume they will add a catcher this off-season, but I won’t be shocked if they don’t attempt to re-sign Piña [sorry PinaMadness].
  6. Joey Wiemer is leading the Arizona Fall League in hits, now with 11 total.
  7. Yeah, to be clear I don’t think the Rays are in any dire situation, and MadThinker brought up an even better example of a team facing a roster crunch in Cleveland. Where I was coming from is that the next few months of the offseason are likely to be very boring while the new CBA [hopefully] gets sorted out. Here are some cases where teams like Tampa Bay and Cleveland will have to make some sort of roster churning moves over the next 6 weeks, even if it’s just trading away players from the fringes of their 40-man roster. Both teams have intriguing players that could be on the move as they make room to protect a few prospects and trim their rosters. Remember, the Rays need to trim several players (~4-5) just to get to 40 before they even worry about who to protect. The following players appear to be among the most likely to be considered “moveable” for each team before the Rule 5 draft… Cleveland: Players MadThinker mentioned earlier as well as possibly Daniel Johnson, Bradley Zimmer, Harold Ramirez, Ernie Clement (MadThinker please correct me if I’m wrong on these possibilities) Tampa Bay: Brendan McKay, Jordan Luplow, Mike Brosseau, Brett Phillips, Louis Head, Ryan Sherriff, Chris Mazza, Jalen Beeks (and a bunch of other relievers) Obviously it won’t be all of those players, and maybe it’s very few of them. The teams could certainly decide to move other players, but one assurance is that each team is going to have to make moves of some kind at the beginning of the offseason.

  9. Here are the Rays current Top 30 Prospects according to Baseball America that are currently Rule 5 eligible (unless they get added to the 40-man roster)… #15 Blake Hunt C #18 Tommy Romero RHP #23 Jacob Lopez LHP #24 Tobias Myers RHP #27 Miles Mastrobuoni UT/SS #28 Jonathan Aranda 1B/2B/3B #29 Ruben Cardenas OF
  10. The Rays annual roster crunch is bearing down. They currently have only 6 free agents on their 40-man roster while they also have an incredible 10 players on the 60-day IL (that will soon count towards their 40-man this off-season) and more than 60 prospects that will be Rule 5 draft eligible this December including several among their organizational top 30 prospects (in a very good system). As they’ve shown in past off-seasons, they’re typically willing to deal from either their major league core or prospects ready for the majors (some recent examples include Nick Solak, Jake Cronenworth, Nate Lowe, and Blake Snell). The Rays could be motivated once again to move medium-to-big names as they trim their 40-man roster. I wonder if they might consider trading Austin Meadows for a prospect return, or post-hype prospects such as Brent Honeywell or Brendan McKay? Regarding Meadows, the Rays have prospect Josh Lowe waiting in the wings to take over an outfield position. There are plenty of other intriguing options up and down their roster as well. Their system is so stacked that they should be able to plug any holes they create via trade. Any targets that would fit the Brewers well?
  11. I don’t really care who they hire, I just want them to implement the same pitching machines and VR that the Giants are using. 12. While I agree that Wiemer ultimately likely ends up in a OF corner, I like that the Brewers are getting him experience in CF. Sort of similar to what the Dodgers have done with development of players such as Cody Bellinger, get him experience playing a premium position. He certainly has the speed and arm strength to play a solid CF.
  13. Lots of prospect helium for Joey Wiemer. Thanks for all of the links, damuelle! Here is the Statcast information… Statcast Data for Sox vs. Rafters - 10/16/2021
  14. Here’s a fun secret, each of these games has a unique game code listed in the box score URL. If you copy and paste the game code from any of the games played at Salt River Fields in a Baseball Savant game link you’ll be able to view Statcast data for these games. 15. The thing I never know about Cleveland is whether they would actually accept a deal that only involves prospects all with an ETA of over a year? They still have a strong pitching staff and could reasonably consider themselves contenders for a playoff spot over the next couple of seasons. When they traded Lindor the return included major league ready players in addition to prospects. Could including players like Urias or Taylor in addition to prospects be a necessity on Guardians side of things?
  16. With the reporting that Stearns is actually under contract for two more years (one year and a team option) that seemingly changes the calculus a bit. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t remain in Milwaukee for the next two years.
  17. Game thread for the ALCS and NLCS. Down to four…
  18. I think this front office is trying for as many bites at the postseason apple as possible. The large majority of their decisions, the Yelich deal aside, are geared toward protecting the long-term sustainability of maintaining an above average roster. It’s probably the right strategy, and teams like the Giants have proven you don’t have to be the best team in order to win the World Series, but I’m getting to the point where I wouldn’t hate seeing them mortgage a little bit of the future in order to put together better rosters for 2022 and 2023.
  19. One free agent I don’t have a good gauge on the likely cost for is Starling Marte. He reportedly turned down an extension offer from the Marlins of 3 years and $30 million before being traded to the Athletics midseason. He would look very good in the top half of the Brewers lineup.
  20. I think they have do something semi-significant in free agency, even if it isn’t swimming in the deepest parts of pool. Free agency is going to be strange this year. The Brewers have shown a willingness to wait out the market. Last year that resulted in Kolten Wong and JBJ, but they were also reportedly very much in on players such as Justin Turner, Marcus Semien, and Eddie Rosario. This year with the new CBA likely pushing back free agency even further, I think there is a good chance it’s more of a mad scramble to sign players than being able to slow play the market over 90-to-120 days.
  21. On the bright side, probably won’t have to worry about innings limits for the starters next season. In all seriousness, I think a season will happen next year, but I would bet against a full season. I have a feeling they’ll come to some sort of agreement in the spring of 2022.
  22. Imagine going back to the Fall of 2019 and trying to explain to someone… Over the next two years a global pandemic is going to impact almost every aspect of our daily lives while forever changing society as we knew it, and Christian Yelich and Cody Bellinger are going to be among the very worst regulars on Postseason teams. I’m not even sure which statement I would’ve had more initial questions about.
  23. One thing I will give the Braves credit for doing, they watched their star player go down mid-season and instead of folding they went out and brought in a whole bunch of offensive-minded replacements.
  24. For all of those who followed the team this year through the ups and the downs and participated in posting on these electronic pages, it was a [mostly] fun ride. In the end it’s hard to argue there aren’t deficiencies to be shored up this off-season, but there were also plenty of great moments and encouraging signs for the future. Please feel free to use this thread to post your thoughts on the season and the ride it was, or what lies ahead. Or basically anything, really, that you want to share.
  25. “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” - A. Bartlett Giamatti
