  1. Johan Camargo signed with the Phillies this evening.
  2. Cubs have apparently signed Marcus Stroman?… just start the lockout already.
  3. I wouldn’t hate taking a chance on Camargo. Another potentially cheap FA that the projection systems somewhat surprisingly like is outfielder Odubel Herrera. Steamer has him at .270/.326 /.437 (.763 OPS) and Davenport has him at .280/.338/.423 (.761 OPS).
  4. Saw this Tweet from Kiley McDaniel, so maybe this is what’s going on with the Curtiss non-tender… Quick reminder if you’re confused why a team non-tendered a player not eligible for arbitration: once-a-year chance to get a player off of the 40-man without putting them through waivers. Normally is followed by a pre-arranged minor league deal with a decent salary/incentives.
  5. The best I can think of is they plan to fill up their 40-man roster with other players prior to the start of spring training when they could’ve just placed him on the 60-day IL.
  6. Both players now become free agents
  7. The Cubs sign the top offensive catcher on the free agent market, Yan Gomes, for 2-years and $13 million. So either 1) he’s going to be their backup catcher, 2) they are anticipating a DH and think Contreras could use more days off from catching while playing in the DH spot, or 3) Contreras may be traded at some point over the next year. I’ll say #1 is the most likely scenario, but with the Cubs who knows.
  8. Looking at the early released projection systems, Steamer likes Pham more than Davenport’s system… Steamer: .258 BA / .354 OBP / .429 SLG (.783 OPS) Davenport: .240 BA / .338 OBP / .395 SLG (.733 OPS) My question with Pham is if he’s a viable everyday RF? Noticed he’s only played 43.0 innings in RF over the course of his MLB career.
  9. Jon Morosi reporting that the Tigers are close to signing Javier Baez to a 6-year deal.
  10. Well a somewhat similar board reaction to catcher Manny Piña being named the PTBNL in the K-Rod deal nearly six years ago… BF.net reacts to Manny Piña joining the Brewers organization Hopefully Sullivan turns out to be as productive as the Pineapple.
  11. The Rangers lineup would start to look pretty solid now if they just went out and added a solid outfield bat via trade, maybe someone like Joey Gallo.
  12. Among all position players he has the 26th highest fWAR (23.7) in baseball since 2015 despite having played in far less games (at least 100+ games less) than everyone else on the list other than Aaron Judge and Trea Turner. For him going forward it will be about his health, but I don’t think there is much question about the talent.
  13. Corey Seager was the gem of this free agent class, IMO. I know he’s been oft-injured, but when healthy he’s such an incredibly talented hitter. Good for the Rangers, I guess at least we can take solace in fact he’s moving to the American League.
  14. So did they ever actually sign Severino?
  15. One additional positive of this early flurry of FA moves is my hopeless pipe dream that the Brewers could sign Corey Seager to a long-term deal should be dashed fairly quickly instead of dragging out most of the offseason.
  16. From Jon Heyman: Max Scherzer and the Mets are finalizing $130M, 3-year deal.
  17. Sounds like most teams would like to get deals in place today because the contract agreement (including physicals) need to be fully executed/completed prior to the lockout.
  18. Via Ken Rosenthal: Growing indications that Scherzer is headed to Mets, sources tell The Athletic. NYM “making progress,” per Joel Sherman. Now from Jon Morosi: Max Scherzer and the #Mets are close to finalizing a multiyear deal, source confirms.
  19. Former Reds pitcher and pinch hitter Michael Lorenzen signed (1-year, $7 million) with the Angels as a starting pitcher with hopes of getting some at bats as well. The Angels are cornering the market on two-way players it appears.
  20. Jon Gray signs with Rangers for 4-years, and $56 million. I actually think that’s a pretty good deal from Texas’s side of things. I think Gray still has a pretty high ceiling, and look forward to seeing what he can do outside of Denver.
  21. My one element of hindsight is they probably should’ve made him a qualifying offer. It would’ve been risky, but I don’t think he would’ve taken it.
  22. Per Ken Rosenthal: Source confirms: Free-agent outfielder Avisail Garcia in agreement with Marlins on four-year contract. Per Jeff Passan: Outfielder Avisail Garcia and the Miami Marlins are in agreement on a four-year, $53 million, a source tells ESPN. Craig Mish was on top of it. Marlins are another team with some money to spend, and they shore up an outfield that has been a big deficit in recent seasons.
  23. The Brewers were reportedly interested in Marcus Semien last offseason. After taking a one year deal last year he just signed a 7-year deal with the Rangers for $175 million.
  24. Rosenthal followed up by providing specific details of Buxton’s deal with Twins: Seven years, $100M. Full no-trade clause. More details: $1M signing bonus. 2022 salary-$9M 2023-28-$15M per season MVP bonuses, believed to be unprecedented, for every year of deal. 1st-$8M 2nd-$7M 3rd-$6M 4th-$5M 5th-$4M 6th-through-10th: $3M Also: $500K each for 502, 533, 567, 600 and 625 plate appearances.
  25. Via Ken Rosenthal: Twins, Buxton closing in on an extension, sources tell The Athletic. And now from Jeff Passan: BREAKING: Center fielder Byron Buxton and the Minnesota Twins are in agreement on a long-term, nine-figure contract extension, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.
