  1. OK, before anyone answers, I remember when this happened I thought 1 cool thing about was that it would end up being much more memorable than most actual perfectos because of the controversy. So, who can name the 3 perfect games since this perfect game that wasn't happened? Jim Joyce botched the call at 1B on Armando Galarraga’s perfect game. At least he admitted his mistake and apologized the next day.
  2. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN201105070.shtml Our closest no-no besides Nieves was Odell Jones, lost after 8.1 IP https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CLE/CLE198805280.shtml I watched the Odell one on TV, he was pretty much hyperventilating on the mound in the 9th. Posted this back in the spring, but this podcast discussed that game briefly... AUDIO via the Effectively Wild Podcast, Episode 1204: Ben Lindbergh, Jeff Sullivan, and Baseball Prospectus writer Russell Carleton discuss Russell’s new book, The Shift. At the 43:00-minute mark they do a stat blast segment in which Carleton shares a story where he compares Bartolo Colon’s unlikely outing on Sunday to his father taking him to an Indians game on May 28, 1988 when they faced the Brewers and journeyman pitcher Odell Jones. Jones was starting in place of Teddy Higuera who had been scratched from the start, and proceeded to pitch a perfect game into the 8th inning. Here is a short Article Link on that very game.
  3. 11 hits so far with no outs in the 5th inning. Wow. Edit: Make that 12 hits!
  4. [sarcasm]The difference of course being that Harper has at least played the position before[/sarcasm].
  5. Is it just me, or does having 6 quality hitters at the top of the lineup seem so much more promising than just 4 or 5? Also, can you imagine this lineup if Arcia starts putting the ball in play with regularity. The arrow is pointing up for this offense.
  6. Quintana's velo was down and command was awful...he looks hurt. And 51 pitches in the first, yikes.
  7. Being tied to the loss of a draft pick for turning down the qualifying offer hurt Moustakas’ value. I also thought that there were reportedly some okay offers early in the off-season and those teams eventually went in other directions (this could be wrong). I don’t think he’ll get $80 million, but also don’t think it will be a repeat of this past off-season.
  8. I don’t think the Orioles will give him away, but I think he is probably one of the best available options when you consider the combination of cost and potential impact. I believe he has the ceiling of a higher upside starter at a potentially moderate cost. Obviously you are taking a risk that you can get his talent to actualize into results, but I think it could be a big payoff if it works out.
  9. I mentioned this after I saw his interview last night, but it actually made me more nervous watching him talk about it. He was saying the right things, but didn’t appear overly confident as he was saying it. I was probably (and hopefully) reading way too much into it, but I didn’t get the sense that he is ecstatic at the thought of running out to the middle of the infield every night.
  10. I saw on Twitter (but unverified) that Moustakas is going to wear #18 since Braun already has #8 locked up. If true, it is little bit funny that they are giving him Sogard’s number even though Sogard is back in the organization.
  11. Yes, last night Counsell said he would be suited up for the game today. Also one of the beat reporters said that Travis Shaw would be at 2B tonight.
  12. I think putting Yelich in the #3 spot would be a mistake. My preference would be to leave Yelich in the #2 spot where he has been dynamic and put Cain back at leadoff. I think Moustakas should bat third, Aguilar fourth, Shaw fifth, Thames/Braun sixth.

  14. The Brewers now have a .500 record in the month of July (12-12). All things considered, that seems like reason for optimism.
  15. I do think Moustakas’ offensive profile is fine with high OBP guys around him in the order. He is going to put the ball in the air without striking out much, and if you have guys get on base in front of him he is often going to move them up at the very least. This season he has done well with 2 outs and runners in scoring position (.845 OPS in 39 PAs) and in situations defined as “high leverage” by B-Ref (.859 OPS in 87 PAs). On a separate note, one thing that stands out to me is if this experiment does fail it sort of compounds the impact of losing out on Machado.
  16. The sad part though is that Moustakas’ .707 OPS split against left handed batters this year is still significantly better than the OPS the Brewers have gotten in the 6th (.610 OPS), 7th (.699 OPS), and 8th (.576 OPS) spots in the batting order this season.
  17. Some of David Stearns initial comments via The Athletic: It could be musical chairs in the infield as the Brewers acquire Mike Moustakas ... “The truth is, with the way we move our infielders around, conventional positions don’t apply to us all that much,” general manager David Stearns said on a conference call with reporters. “We ask a lot of all of our infielders, to play all over the dirt.” Another interesting note from the article is that Stearns said the teams have been discussing a potential trade for at least a month.
  18. Resetting the rumored Moustakas interest from this past January as captured in the Sign Moustakas, Trade Shaw Thread, the off-season speculation on the Brewers interest in Moustakas initially came from Jim Bowden via this Tweet:
  19. With Scott Boras as his agent and no draft pick compensation tied to him this year I think he’ll be inclined to look for a multiple year deal covering his early 30’s.
  20. about 6 hour flight Well Counsell said he would be playing tomorrow, so I assume he’ll be on a cross country flight in the morning (if not the red eye).
  21. Moustakas has a .375 xwOBA which is 48th best in baseball this season among players with 250+ PAs, and third best on the Brewers now behind Jesús Aguilar (.391 xwOBA / 25th in MLB) and Christian Yelich (.380 xwOBA / 38th in MLB). Also, I know they selected B.J. Surhoff (#1 overall) and Rickie Weeks (#2 overall), but have the Brewers ever traded for a former top two MLB draft pick? Moustakas was the #2 overall selection behind David Price in 2007.
  22. I know his OBP is low, but Moustakas’ strike out rate is solid. He has just a 15% K-rate in 417 plate appearances this year.
  23. We can all watch him in next year's Major League All Star Game with Jean Segura and Scooter Gennett. And Mitch Haniger! (Yes, I know we can’t blame Stearns for Haniger).
  24. Happy for Brett Phillips in that he will be a major league regular now.
  25. In case you didn’t click that Adam McCalvy Twitter link... Brewers GM David Stearns says he thinks he still has a move or two in him before Tuesday’s deadline.
