  1. I don’t want to be a debbie downer just because of a few tough losses, but short of some impactful deadline moves I think this offense is going to be exposed in important games down the stretch for its stars and scrubs makeup. Plenty of baseball to play and they have managed to make it work to this point, but I think there is reason to be concerned about having seven players in the regular rotation with sub-100 OPS+ marks. At least Braun (97 OPS+), Villar (96 OPS+) and Perez (91 OPS+) are passable, but guys like Piña (65 OPS+), Santana (82 OPS+), Arcia (36 OPS+), and Sogard (13 OPS+) continue to be detrimental to the offensive success of this team. You just can’t have that many nearly automatic outs in your lineups each night and expect continued success over the course of a season.
  2. Good call, and Vazquez has given up a .702 OPS to right handers this year vs. .358 OPS to left handed hitters.
  3. Yelich has had the widest called zone of anyone today.
  4. Cain might as well swing for the fences here, manufacturing runs tonight seems like a lost cause.
  5. Will give a ton of credit to Kratz that inning, he had some huge stops on balls that could have easily gotten by him.
  6. Six offensive outs left, need to make them count. As the old adage goes, “you can’t win if you don’t score.” The first two batters this inning being Arcia and Sogard isn’t exactly awe inspiring. Edit: Aguilar in to PH for Arcia.
  7. 0-0 without much action to this point. Basically a 3 inning ballgame now, let’s go!
  8. I tend to agree that I expect the initial reaction to be that the return for Machado will seem lighter than expected. I don’t think there will be enough bidders to drive up offers to the point of being significant overpays. It is possible the Orioles could channel the 2011 Mets with Jose Reyes and just hang onto Machado (although the Mets were at least a .500 team leading up to the trade deadline), but they would get absolutely roasted if they did (and deservedly so).
  9. Impressive that Kelvin Herrera has only walked two batters this season in 25.2 innings pitched. Kudos to the Nationals for striking early. If you are going to add substantial pieces in a pennant chase, doing so six weeks before the trade deadline offers some nice added benefit.
  10. Came across these MLB standings line graphs today and thought it was interesting to see how each division has progressed...
  11. I don't think Hiura is going to get a September call-up this year. If I had to guess his MLB debut (assuming good health) will be sometime next May or June. Unless they trade a bunch of prospects this deadline, the Brewers are facing a significant 40-man roster crunch this year and adding Hiura to the 40-man potentially exposes one more good prospect to the Rule 5 draft.

  13. 35th round selection Josh Watson is returning to TCU for his senior year per his own Tweet.
  14. After playing a few weeks with Kansas City of the independent American Association former outfielder Johnny Davis has now moved on to the Mexican League with Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos. More information in this article, Tecos acquire new leadoff hitter.
  15. I don’t think “oh well, they would have lost anyway” is a good way to evaluate pitcher effectiveness. Based on what you have seen so far are you comfortable with Boone Logan continuing to pitch in close games moving forward?
  16. Both interesting targets. I think I would favor Iglesias due to his defensive abilities, but it seems Jordy Mercer would have the higher probability to get hot offensively during a short stretch of time. I think either could be a solid pickup that wouldn’t deplete the farm system much. Trading with the Tigers also makes sense from the standpoint they have greater flexibility with their 40-man roster to potentially protect decent prospects that will possibly otherwise be exposed in the upcoming Rule 5 draft if they remain in the Brewers organization.
  17. I hadn’t heard this claim before, from a recent Ken Rosenthal FOX Sports video segment: “Orlando Arcia came into Spring Training out of shape in the opinion of some with the club.”

  19. If you need an ole fashioned therapeutic Boone Logan meltdown then head over to the In-Game Thread, but figured it would be worth posing the question in this thread... With Boone Logan continuing to pitch poorly against left-handed batters how much longer should the Brewers give him before they move on?
  20. Why was Cabell let go from LSU? He wasn’t really “let go”, he was let out of his signed National Letter of Intent to attend LSU. By releasing him from that commitment he is free to sign with another school, mostly likely a JUCO, unless he signs with the Brewers.
  21. Someone asks "Why is Boone Logan still on the roster?" ...drink! Why is Boone Logan still on the roster? Why is Boone Logan still on the roster? Why is Boone Logan still on the roster? 22. BA with the “it’s easy to second guess when a move goes wrong” referring to CC’s decision to pitch Boone Logan. I don’t think it’s second guessing when everyone in the park knew how that was going to go before it happened.
  23. From today’s game notes (as pointed out by Adam McCalvy)...
  24. I completely agree. I tried to cover all of the contenders that currently have had below average production on the left side of the infield this season. It isn’t perfect from the standpoint some teams have injuries, good players in slumps, long term commitments, etc., that are all factors worth considering.
