  1. Per Adam McCalvy regarding the impact of the scheduled makeup date doubleheader... It will mean 21 scheduled games in 20 days for the Brewers into the All-Star break.
  2. I will be very surprised if the Brewers call up Keston Hiura this September. It would start his service time clock potentially risking one less year of team control if he sticks in the majors the following season. It would also force the Brewers to unnecessarily add Hiura to the 40-man roster which is already facing many tough decisions about which players to either add or risk losing in the upcoming Rule 5 draft including... Jake Gatewood, Troy Stokes Jr., Luis Ortiz, Trey Supak, Bubba Derby, Kodi Medeiros, Cody Ponce, Phil Bickford, Nate Kirby, Quintin Torres-Costa, Jon Olczak, Jon Perrin, Nate Griep, Devin Williams, Nate Orf, Gilbert Lara, etc. Some of those players will inevitably be traded this deadline, but still some tough decisions likely ahead.
  3. Makeup date announced as part of a now scheduled doubleheader on Saturday, July 14th beginning at 11:35 a.m. CT.
  4. I use the Brewers page at Roster Resource. For the minor leaguers it has an “Options or Rule 5 Status” column that is helpful.
  5. They got 4 at Pittsburgh right before the AS break. Think they'll try to squeeze a doubleheader in there somewhere. My guess is Thursday, September 20th which is an off day before a series in Pittsburgh.
  6. Apparently the city of Pittsburgh is experiencing major flooding and below is a scene from PNC Park. Why did it take them so long to cancel the game?
  7. Would not count on this game being played tonight. Current field status... From Adam McCalvy... The field is flooded. The dugouts are flooded. It is after 9 p.m. ET. It is pouring. Chad Kuhl is still in the Pirates bullpen waiting to warm up, where he's been waiting for two hours. We should go home.

  9. It looks like they took a snippet from Adam McCalvy’s Sunday ARTICLE. Here is the full transcript from McCalvy’s update on Jimmy Nelson... Nelson 'trending in right direction' Sunday marked one month since rehabbing right-hander Jimmy Nelson's check-up with the doctor who performed his shoulder surgery, and he told Milwaukee radio station 105.7 FM The Fan that "it's trending in the right direction right now." There is no timetable for Nelson to throw off a mound or to return to the Brewers' rotation, because those benchmarks all depend on his repaired right shoulder. He is currently working back toward throwing 150 feet on flat ground, the distance he was at before a shutdown period before and after a visit with Dr. Neal ElAtrrache. "The last week or two is the best it's gone so far," Nelson said. "Right now, there's a lot of good signs. It's been responding better than it has this whole process. I'm not behind schedule or anything. I'm still on schedule or maybe even ahead of schedule. It's just the fact I got so far ahead of schedule, whenever you get shut down for 10-12 days, everybody starts freaking out." Nelson said he is down 25 pounds from the start of Spring Training.
  10. As always, consider the source and decide for yourself in these instances... A senior writer for LSU’s Rivals website (TigerBait.com) mentioned via a Tweet that “Turang will go right down to the deadline.” Also probably worth noting, Jordyn Adams just became the first 1st round draft pick (among the first 30 picks) this year to sign for over-slot value. Understandably the guys that sign for over-slot value are going to require a longer process as teams need to guarantee their allotted pool money (and up to 5% taxed overage) are in order before signing those players.
  11. It seems like the bolded parts are contradictory statements. If I am reading it correctly you are asserting that teams don’t need to offer full value in order to acquire Syndergaard or deGrom because baseball is flooded with prospect hugging organizations that will depress the market value for either pitcher. Then you said that is why they won’t be traded? Sure, if teams don’t offer adequate value for either pitcher the Mets have absolutely no reason to move either player, but then doesn’t that sink your theory about teams being able to acquire either pitcher without offering equal value as long as it is simply the “best offer”?
  12. Counsell confirmed after the game that Freddy Peralta will get the start on Sunday.
  13. Back on topic... Is this offer really that bad? I assume Burnes and Peralta would have to be included given they are the Brewers best pitching prospects. However, perhaps the injury concern with Syndergaard is the reason they take the second best hitting prospect instead of the first? Or would there be such interest in him that despite the injury concern, the acquiring team would have to part with their 3 best prospects? Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I think a deal would be 2 pitchers (Burnes and Peralta) and 2 hitters (Erceg and Phillips). The problem is you are competing against the majority of baseball for Syndergaard’s services. Even with some real injury concern Thor’s ceiling is so incredibly tantalizing. If that proposed deal gets it done than a dozen or so teams across baseball fell asleep at the wheel, IMO.
  14. Yeah the ownership in Baltimore is rather dumb. I think even the Orioles administration understands they must move Machado. That being said, I have this feeling that with the All-Star Game being in their backyard this year they will feel pressure to hold onto him at least through that game (yes, I realize that is a terrible way to run a baseball organization, but we are also talking about the team that punts the International market every year). Due to the likely lack of current potential suitors it probably works in their benefit anyway to wait until closer to the deadline. All of this being said, there was the following report this evening from Jon Paul Morosi... O's, D-backs have talked Machado trade:

  16. One troubling feature among the position players is there is a significant divide in production between the top and bottom of the lineup. I don’t think success is sustainable with a stars and scrubs pool of position players. Using Baseball Reference WAR four position players have combined for 9.7 bWAR this season: Cain (3.8 bWAR), Shaw (2.4 bWAR), Yelich (2.3 bWAR), Aguilar (1.2 bWAR). The rest of the position players currently on the active roster have combined for 2.6 bWAR. If you use Fangraphs instead the WAR total among those top four is 9.1 fWAR: Cain (3.4 fWAR), Shaw (2.1 fWAR), Yelich (2.0 fWAR), Aguilar (1.6 fWAR). The rest of the position players on the current 25-man roster have combined for just 0.7 fWAR. With Thames back in the fold he will continue to add value as well. The primary culprits that have failed to produce much above replacement level value (and in some cases below) thus far are Santana (0.7 bWAR, 0.2 fWAR), Braun (0.2 bWAR / 0.2 fWAR), Pérez (0.3 bWAR, 0.1 fWAR), Piña (-0.3 bWAR / -0.2 fWAR), Arcia (0.1 bWAR, -0.4 fWAR), Sogard (-0.6 bWAR, -0.6 fWAR) I think this current roster has enough high end talent to be successful, but not enough quality position players around them. I don’t believe you can expect four players to account for more than 80% of the value going forward and maintain success. I hope they can add a couple of 1.0-2.0 WAR type position players at the deadline to plug the most glaring holes.
  17. I agree with everything in this post. If we are to trade for a starter, I really like Happ and Ross as options for us. I don’t think I realized just how impressive of an age-35 campaign J.A. Happ is having while pitching in the AL East. Through 82.2 IP he has a 1.065 WHIP and a 10.2 K/9! And it would certainly be nice to add another left-handed starter to the rotation. [sarcasm]Unfortunately being raised a Cubs fan disqualifies Happ from further consideration.[/sarcasm]
  18. The closest pitcher comparable I can think of would be Chris Sale traded with three years of team control remaining.
