  1. From Bob Nightengale: Seems like a pretty sharp distinction between discussing a Chris Archer trade and aqcuiring Jake Odorizzi.
  2. FWIW, Jermaine Palacios did not appear in this year’s Baseball America Prospect Handbook Twins top 30, but did appear in the supplement that has each organization’s #31 ranked prospect. I know Odorizzi wasn’t good last year, but the Twins just turned Palacios into two seasons (the age 28 and 29 seasons) of a pitcher that has had some decent success as an MLB starting pitcher.
  3. Reports are the deal is solely for Palacios. So the Rays have now made back-to-back perplexing moves? Are they just strictly dumping salary right now or is something bigger coming?
  4. Per Jeff Passan:
  5. Such a perplexing DFA move with Dickerson. I am assuming there is more to the story since as a standalone baseball move it doesn’t seem to make any sense whatsoever.
  6. The Clay Davenport Projections updated on Tuesday, and have the Brewers projected as an 87-win Wild Card participant. Here are the full NL Central projections... [pre]NL Cent Won Lost Runs Runs Against CHC 95 67 804 673 MIL 87 75 812 749 STL 86 76 754 711 PIT 75 87 691 752 CIN 73 89 729 815[/pre]
  7. He is represented by O’Connell Sports Management. They represent Brett Phillips, but other than that I don’t see any other connection. Click the Spoiler below for their list of MLB clients (some of the team listings might be outdated):
  8. The dollar value of WAR is determined by the value on the open market (i.e. free agency), not including guys that are cost controlled. The current value is likely a little north of $8 million. I saw estimates going into the offseason that predicted the value per WAR was going to rise to $11 million this year, but I don’t think that is the case based on the signings we’ve seen thus far.
  9. I think there is a very slim chance some trade involving Braun and Kemp could be executed, but I think there is a zero percent chance Kemp would ever suit up for the Brewers. It could basically be a means to acquire Yasmani Grandal and maybe a flier prospect.
  10. Well the first time we tried the Hiura comp exercise the names mentioned included: Kolton Wong Wade Boggs Jose Altuve Craig Biggio Honus Wagner Jeff Kent Rogers Hornsby I think it’ safe to say some of those were said in jest. Coming up with a new set of comps for Hiura is probably a good idea.
  11. RHP Hiram Burgos has re-signed with the Brewers. Initial post is updated accordingly.
  12. Brewers have re-signed Hiram Burgos to a minor league deal per this report which has since been confirmed by Burgos himself.
  13. Well I was way over on AAV, but I did mention the opt out after year two... okay, I realize no one is likely impressed. Here is what I think the three you mentioned will receive, whether the Brewers would be willing to match any of these is anyone’s guess? Jake Arrieta: 4 years, $92 million Alex Cobb: I’ll stick with my original “4 years, $58 million”, although the years seems too high now. If he only gets 3 years, I would expect something like 3 years, $48 million. Lance Lynn: 3 years, $43.5 million
  14. You factored in Yelich’s first (age-21) season when he made his major league debut in late July and only played in 62 games. In the four seasons since he has played in 144, 126, 155, 156 games, respectively.
  15. No, this is why: http://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/batting/split/182 Not picking on Dadbauer here because I have noticed multiple cases where someone has referenced the Brewers pitching woes last year. If someone could guarantee me that Brewers pitching would perform exactly the same as last year I think I would take it in a heartbeat.
  16. Grisham's inclusion in this is pretty exciting to me, given that he's not a "random guys with great MiLB stats" like those KATOH prospects sometimes are, but instead his inclusion is corroborated by Grisham's excellent prospect pedigree. My guess is that KATOH is very impressed with the BB% and OBP and thinks that the lack of power is something that will come as Grisham ages. I highly recommend you listen to this podcast: Effectively Wild Episode 1173: Actual Stats vs. Actual Scouts Chris Mitchell goes into detail about Trent Grisham’s KATOH ranking. Some of the reasons you mentioned, but he also notes that Grisham had a very high rate of balls hit to the center of the field last year (37.6%). He said that usually players with that batted ball trait carry higher BABIPs (in the .350’s), but that Trent Grisham had a lower BABIP (.299 last year). He theorizes that he may have been a victim of bad luck, although he also offers the caveat that is possible something else is causing the lower than expected BABIP. Also, if you look for Trent’s player page on Fangraphs he is still listed as Trent Clark.
  17. In Ken Rosenthal’s most recent Article for the The Athletic he included this nugget when referring to the Brewers: ”The team also has explored trades for lesser pitchers, including the Tampa Bay Rays’ Jake Odorizzi and Oakland Athletics’ Jharel Cotton.” That is the first time I have heard the Brewers connected to Jharel Cotton, but it doesn’t necessarily surprise me they might be looking for mid-20’s pitchers with several years of control remaining. Who else fits the “lesser pitcher” description that you think might make sense for the Brewers?
  18. No, IMO all the 6th year does is lower the AAV against the luxury tax. I never thought he would get anything less than $125 million, I just thought it would be for five years. I was really hoping the Cubs would be on the hook for a higher AAV if they landed Darvish, I think they did a nice job to keep the annual commitment down. Still waiting until we get details on the opt out clause, that is something he had reportedly been looking for, and something I thought the Brewers might get creative in offering. McCalvy pointed out that the Cubs beat out the Brewers on both Quintana and Darvish over the past half year. I don’t doubt the Brewers are serious about adding a difference maker to their rotation, I just don’t see that difference maker being available via free agency with Darvish now off the board. The sky isn’t falling by any means, but this also reinforces that the Brewers aren’t likely to assemble a roster that can compete with the Cubs, Dodgers, and Nationals in the NL this year.
  19. Has anyone seen anything definitive about Darvish’s opt out? Sounds as though it is likely after the second year of the deal?
  20. What do you think the chances are Scott Boras has placed at least one phone call or text to Mark Attanasio in the past hour?
  21. If the Brewers are truly looking to make moves in the interest of viability for success over the next five years, I do not think signing any of those guys would be a good move either. I was of the same mindset in terms of “Darvish or bust” when it came to adding a difference maker starter via free agency this off-season. At this point, I would rather they just saved the money and evaluated their internal options for now, while looking to make a trade at some point when the value seems right.
  22. ALL- Posts that include personal attacks are going to be deleted. Lets stick to arguing topics, ideas, strategies, etc., without turning things personal.
  23. The Cubs owe Jason Hayward $134 million over the next 6 seasons, or in other words a higher AAV than it just took them to sign the best pitcher on the market.
  24. I know there is hope that the Darvish signing will unblock the free market, but something tells me Scott Boras is going to be very unhappy with the seemingly team friendly terms of this Darvish deal. Do you think he is more likely to now settle for less, or push back against market forces?
  25. The AAV is low enough when spread over the six years, that it doesn’t seem like a bad deal at all.
